Doing some family research and have come across the name Tangerine, with the nn of Tangi, for a girl.

What very unusual names have you got in your family tree?

I love Tangerine! I'd think that the short form would probably be TAN-jee. The most exciting names in my family tree are Elizabelle and Marsaili - both 19th cent Scotland.

Kerenhappuch, Rechebina, Hephzibah, take your pick. We have an elderly neighbour called Zilpah.

Vroooooom · 01/06/2025 09:06

@LegoAirlines do they work in care homes by any chance? I can’t imagine too many people with that name.

I have a couple of Zilpah or Zilpha in my family tree. I like both, but prefer Zilpah. She'd be shortened to Zilly wouldn't she.

Also a Christian which I really like for a woman.

We had an Aunt Tassel in our family, never heard of it since.

Tassel is a great name!

i have a relative from years ago called aubergenie. I’m not surprised it’s not on the top 100 girls names for 2025

Clearinguptheclutter · 01/06/2025 08:58

Oh phew I thought you were going to say you were planning on calling your daughter Tangerine

Lettice. Waaaaay back, but a variation of Letitia, apparently.

One of Boris Johnson's daughters is called Lara Lettice.

My grandad (who died before I was born) was called Hagar (pronounced Hay Garr).

Hagar was a woman in the Bible (Ishmael's mum)

Corallie · 01/06/2025 08:10

Tangi is nicer than Clemmi and the latter is quite popular (Clementine), so I like it

LegoAirlines · 01/06/2025 06:29

I know a Satsuma, who carries it off.

Tangi pronounced tan-jee or tangy? Might be worth being aware Tangi means funeral (in Maori) - pronounced most similar to tangy.

I don’t know,it was written down on documents. I presume tan-jee.

i have also found a relative whose first name is Leicester.

My Nan was called Henrietta, which isn’t as unusual as Tangerine but you never hear of it these days. My grandpa was Percy.

Henrietta is a lovely name, and I have always liked Percy from Percy Thrower gardening fame. Was he Percy or Percival?
