Help!! I cannot name my son!!

I’m having an awful time trying to choose my son’s name (he’s here already). In my list are Rowan, Roman, Rhys/Reece, Rian, Reagan, Mason, Jayden, Jamie and Corey. Problem is right now he suits Corey, but I’m also aware he won’t look cute forever and am conscious of choosing a strong name that will see him through his later years, which my daughters will. With a boy, I feel like I want his name to portray strength, handsome & cool, which is asking a lot. From searches I’ve realised I’m more drawn to soft names and gender neutral names for boys.

I’d love something unusual like my daughter’s name but with boys I just can’t seem to find that. As my daughter’s name is 3 syllables, I’d ideally like at least 2 or long sounding name eg Rhys.

can anyone share their thoughts on my list and perhaps share any other names they think I might love….

boys names are harrrrrrddddd!

Corey is fine , is sweet , cool and masculine. I can see a grown up cool handsome guy being called Corey. Also Jamie is a good strong name to fit any age. Or James , nick name Jamie. Jacob or Jake is nice. Not overly keen on the others very common

Pinty · 04/06/2025 14:24

Rowan is my favourite, or maybe Reece, i'm not keen on the others

Bownessbay · 04/06/2025 14:20

Would Jonah or Louis work as softer male names? Or Adam or Harry? Rowan is lovely though as are Rhys and Roman.

BuntyBeaufort · 04/06/2025 14:15

I don’t think they’re chavvy either, except for Jayden, and Roman is faddy and will soon date. From your list I like Cady too, and particularly like a pp suggestion of Owen.

CandidGoose · 04/06/2025 10:47

I am not so keen on Jayden either, Corey and Roman are nice. I have two sons called Tobie and Oliver. Both pretty strong names and Tobie being slightly unusual due to the spelling. It is an individual choice and totally up to you!

uncomfortablydumb60 · 04/06/2025 10:13

I have a Nephew called Jamie, James on his BC ignore any comments on your names
Your son, your choice.

Needmorelego · 04/06/2025 09:55

@Flashahah that's the thing - "chavvy" means different things to different people.
I have seen names like Oliver or Annabel described as "chavvy".
@Maero if YOU like a name don't give a thought to what others think.

annaagain · 04/06/2025 09:53

I don’t think any of your names sound strong, how about something like Joseph which he can shorten when he grows up? Or if you like Jamie, how about James and they he could use Jamie affectionately or Jay which is similar to your Jayden or James formally? I also know a Joseph called Jay but I don’t like Jayden for a grown man.

@Needmorelego isn’t it 🥴 I never even thought of the names I liked being ‘chavvy’….now I’m wondering, am I, without realising I am. I suppose it means something different to everyone. However to me, it’s a negative association and not a nice association for someone to have of the name you’ve chosen for one of the loves of your life 😭

They’re not chavvy at all!

Aww it's sad that you don't like your name.
We are from SW England. His full name is Rowan Daniel. I also have Callum Mark( after his Dad) and Lucas Adam.
Im sure his name will come to you in a flash and then he will just be your Rowan(?)

Maero · 04/06/2025 09:31

@uncomfortablydumb60 You do 🥰 I actually didn’t put on my post that throughout my whole pregnancy when I thought about my baby, Rowan kept coming to my mind and in theatre when they asked me I said I really liked Rowan, but wasn’t certain. I first came across it in 2012 (when I met an elderly man who is a writer) and thought wow that’s such a cool name (it’s seems to be getting very popular now though according to online and this post). However, since he was born I’ve taken doubts. I’m not sure I like how the northern Irish say it. May I ask where you are from? It’s good to hear he likes his name, that is very important to me as I don’t like my name - felt it hindered me in life at times, which I wouldn’t want for my own children (even though my parents probably didn’t think that when they named me, they just liked the meaning and that it was unusual).

@Andoutcomethewolves , Corey and Regan/Reagan are Irish surnames.

Needmorelego · 04/06/2025 08:00

@Maero "chavvy" is a terrible word and there was a thread a while ago about what it actually means and people were saying all sorts of different meanings - completely different ones that weren't even similar.
So it's impossible to say a name is "chavvy".

Maero · 04/06/2025 07:35

@cheesycheesy would you say there are all chavvy? I’m not a chavvy person (well at least I don’t think I am lol) so don’t want to label my son with that before he even has a chance to prove himself. Are there any non-chavvy names you could suggest?

I have an adult son, Rowan, who is amazing so that's my vote
He's 27, and has never met another and likes his name.

cheesycheesy · 04/06/2025 03:26

If he suits Corey then why not give him that name. I wouldn’t say it’s childish or cute. Really not keen on Roman. Not sure why that name is popular all of a sudden. Theres quite a few chavvy sounding names on that list

Maxorias · 04/06/2025 03:16

I like Roman and Mason in your list.

If you like soft gender neutral, how about Casey ?

@Andoutcomethewolves auhhh it definitely has improved massively but a lot of Protestants wouldn’t call their child a very very Irish name eg Ciaran, Daithi, Ciara, etc. and while things are very different to the 90s, there is still improvement to be made. The area I’m from for example, people of one religion wouldn’t use the services of another just because they are the opposite (it’s mental and just pure nonsense).

Rowan, Corey and Reagan are apparently regarded as Irish and I’m actually the Protestant in our marriage, but I just like them. I’m very open minded unlike a lot of Protestants from here, having went to integrated schools 😅

Ah glad to hear things have improved a bit! My friends are Mairead and Caragh so I think quite obviously Catholic. They have some pretty horrible stories of growing up in Belfast.

I wouldn't say Corey, Rowan and Reagan are particularly Irish? Two of these are my cousins names and one my friend's son. We're all English!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/06/2025 11:21

Rowan.
