There’s no need to guess. Just look on ONS.
Olivia, Amelia and Isla for girls. Muhammad, Noah and Oliver for boys.

This ⬆️

Thing is, though Mohammed is the most popular name nationwide, it doesn’t seem so because I think the majority of Mohammeds go by a second name instead. I’m a supply teacher and have taught in lots of classes which I would have expected from the religious/ethnic make up might have had a few Mohammeds, but there very rarely is one.

Olivia, Ava, Arthur, Evie on the other hand…

Mohammed is the most popular name because Muslims traditionally call their first son Mohammed. So you only need 2% or 3% of boys to be Muslim for it to be the single most popular name, because non-Muslims will pick from 100 or more different names. But it does enable people to catastrophize about how tHe MuSlImS aRe TaKiNg OvEr ArE cOuNtRy.

Something similar happens in Spain, where lots of daughters are called Maria as their first given name but are actually known by the second. In fact if you look at something like a staff page, you will see women's names written as "Mᵃ Carmen", with the Maria being reduced to a bit of a formality (and everyone will know her as Carmen).

Lily, Evie/Eva/Ava, Olivia, Amelia, Sophia, Freya, Mia, Ella, Ivy, Iris, Isabella, Esme, Margot.

Oscar, Theo/Teddy, Harry, Noah, Oliver, Arthur, Alfie, Albie, Archie, Jackson, Elijah, George, Leo, Arlo, Hugo.

I find it funny that I still quite like the ‘older’ names like Ava, Theo, May, George etc. but the idea of teaching a Sharon, Tracey or Jeremy fills me with horror! Probably because it means I am old enough that those names have come back round in fashion! 🤣

In my experience they go by Adam. I have always wondered why!

A family member has just had a Paul. 👍

But if they have a second son, I think Mike could be a 60s name too far...

Only if their surname is Hunt.

noliteteb · 26/05/2025 23:15

Oscar, Oliver, Fin/Finley, Arthur, Teddy/Theo/Ted.
Lily, Evie, Esme, Isla, Aria - any girls name ending in -ie or -ia round here.

But that would be a transgression of the Unwritten Law.
I personally am dying for time to cycle around and give us Jane, Janet, Carol, Margaret, Susan, John, David, Stephen, Paul, Andrew, RIchard, Geoff and wild crazy eccentric names like those!

This thread feels goady. We've all got feelings about names, many personal.

You never know if the person you're communicating with has a loved one with those names. I'm sure plenty will be happy with the name they've given their child.

Perhaps get a hobby?

NoBiscuitsLeftInMyTin · 26/05/2025 22:55

OMG, both my boys names are mentioned...... I shall hang my head in shame....

Could have been worse (Doug and Dinsdale).

It truly shocks me that people are still using Olivia and Jack in 2025 and yet their popularity endures, especially Olivia.

They’re nice names, but they’re not that nice.

I do wonder how the amalgamation of numbers for Theodore/Theo/Teddy would look because there are so very many of them, mostly under 10 years of age.

creamcheeseandlox · 26/05/2025 22:44

Ava, Mia, Olivia, Leo, Albie, George, Henry, harry, Louis/lewis. I detest when the girls names are followed up by names. I.e, Elsie Mae, Ava Mae, Ronnie Mae, Mia Hannah etc. It's been done to death and sounds so common now.

samarrange · 26/05/2025 22:42

TheyFuckYouUpYourMamAndDad · 26/05/2025 19:45

I’m a primary school teacher…one of my parents had her 6th and 7th (twins) babies a few months ago and called the Ronnie and Reggie. I had to dig deep to maintain professional standards, when the child in my class announced the names of her new baby bothers.

Could have been worse (Doug and Dinsdale).

SabrinaThwaite · 26/05/2025 22:36

They aren’t ‘overused’ names. They’re quite rightly popular names because parents like them for their children.

Pemba · 26/05/2025 22:32

Isla and Ava.

ByLimeAnt · 26/05/2025 22:28

Anything with May/Mae. Lily. Ava/Eva. Olivia. Amelia. Harry, Theo, Jack, Alfie, Hayden/Kayden/Jaden. Jamie

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 26/05/2025 22:20

Freddie, they’re absolutely everywhere around here - go anywhere with under-7s and there is definitely a Fred there.

Girls, bit less cut and dry IMO. A lot of L names and endless vowel names.

mummysmagicmedicine · 26/05/2025 22:19

Ada, Ottilie, Evelyn, Tilly, Sophie, Sophia

Albie, Alfie, James, Jack, Henry, Theo, George, Louie, Freddie

RiderGirl · 26/05/2025 22:11

My DD's name is one of those mentioned but I don't care, I love it (she's 15)! I'd already decided that if I ever had another daughter after my first that she would have that name 23 years ago...
