Can anyone find a middle ground between me and DH’s name lists?

Have NC’d for this Blush

DH and I have very, very different tastes when it comes to names. I’ll give you our lists below, but we’re nowhere close in terms of taste. What sounds nice to me DH hates and vice versa. I apologise profusely if anyone’s name comes up, I am really not meaning to offend anyone but names are very personal and tastes are very different. Please don’t take any offence and fwiw, my name always comes up on outdated/names people don’t like threads Grin for context, we live in Scotland and DH is Scottish, I’m English. If there’s a specific reason for DH not liking mine, I’ve put it next to the name.

My list:

Lily- too twee apparently
Rosie- he’s said he likes it but not enough to say it every day henceforth. He doesn’t like variations such as Rosaline/d, Rosa or Rose.
Daisy- brief period of time a girl wasn’t nice to DS with this name
Jasmine - Aladdin (who honestly thinks that!)
Ophelia- apparently pretentious, although I love Hamlet!
Scarlett
Tara- his first dog was called that so apparently he can’t name DD ‘after’ his dog Hmm
Emily
Ruby

DH’s list:

Michelle
Siobhan
Lisa
Louise
Mhairi
Bernadette

I particularly don’t like Bernadette and Siobhan. But honestly, I don’t like any of them. No connotations or personal issues with people with these names but I just don’t like them. Does anyone have any suggestions for a middle ground? I’m not sure there is one! We had a boy name agreed immediately but we’re worlds apart on a girls one Sad

His names are hideous and dated and yours are all lovely. There’s no middle ground sorry.

plan4now · 25/05/2025 22:13

Oh yes, Róise might be a good shout - Gaelic vibes for him, the Irish for Rose for you? Louisa also a good suggestion.

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/05/2025 22:12

Your list is lovely! DH’s I only like Louise - how about Eloise or Louisa? He needs to come up with some more ideas as his are very niche or dated.

A few ideas -

Taking names on his list and making them sound a bit more like yours…
Louisa?
Lisette?
Maria?

namepains · 25/05/2025 22:09

@NuffSaidSamthat’s fair, I still feel vindicated that his are worse Grin he does like Rosie but apparently because he likes Cracklin Rosie by Neil Diamond, he can’t call his DD that as it’s about a prostitute (I think?). If I HAD to call DD one from his list, I’d pick Lisa, but I give it a 5/10 on how much I like it.

The name we would’ve called this baby if it was a boy would’ve been Finn.

I like Scarladette!

Top entry in the 10 most popular girls names 2027. You heard it here first.

😎

plan4now · 25/05/2025 22:08

I like Mhairi, but agree the rest of his lists sounds like girls born in the 1980s.

I know young children with pretty much all of your names, and I think many of those names could become the 1980s names of now!

Could you go for something more traditional or Scottish/celtic to be a bit more timeless?

Pemba · 25/05/2025 22:07

You have some nice names on your list, his list seems a bit outdated tbh, especially Michelle and Bernadette, although they're all nice enough.

Comedycook · 25/05/2025 22:07

Lucy
Anna
Annabelle
Millie

TomatoSandwiches · 25/05/2025 22:07

His is just a list of girls he fancied at some point op, it's a bit odd to want to name your own baby after your past crushes.

dontcomeatme · 25/05/2025 22:06

How about joining some together,
So Michelle and Daisy - Maisie
Instead of Scarlett or Siobhan, go for Charlotte ?
Instead of Tara or Lily would yous do Matilda NN Tilly ?

Or first and middle names
I like Emily Louise for example.

Needmorelego · 25/05/2025 22:06

Lisa or Louise on his list are nice.
You like Lily.
I think an L name maybe?

Laura
Lola
Lila
Lillan

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 25/05/2025 22:05

Wow, spot the guy who went to school in Scotland in the 80s/90s (so did I!).
Can you start by looking through the top 20 most popular girls names and seeing which ones you both like? Then that may give you an idea of the style of name you can agree on and then look for more names like that.

ETA Sorry if you've done this already!

Sinkingfeeling952 · 25/05/2025 22:05

Sadie?

I agree I always think Aladdin when I hear Jasmine 😂

NuffSaidSam · 25/05/2025 22:05

Scarladette

I like Scarladette!

NuffSaidSam · 25/05/2025 22:04

I'm not keen on most of your names, but his ones are absolutely terrible!

It sounds like he likes Rosie best from your list. What's your favourite from his list?

Can you say what your sons name is? Some can get a flavour for what you both like.

(Jasmine is definitely Aladdin btw).

namepains · 25/05/2025 22:04

@Lassangothat took me longer than it should have Grin
