DH has a friend called Bernie - he sent him an email and at the bottom was a note that if he tells anyone his real name is Bernard he will come and kill him - Silly Fucker did we think he was called Frank and people called him Bernie for short?????

pinkyp · 26/05/2008 00:19

honestly? it reminds me of the dog st benard.
I do like old fashioned names though.

Clary · 26/05/2008 00:10

oh Cod I use that quote all the time.

Sometimes in my head just to remind me...caught myself shouting Oi Ref! t'other week. This is at a training session for 6yos

mobileslostisitinthefreeze · 25/05/2008 13:36

Excuse me ladies, but my nephew is called Bernard and he is 10, and copes lovely. He is the kid every one loves, the kid who is cheeky without being rude, top of the class and a whizz at sports. He is a lovely lad. Oh, and he was named after his Grandad.

fanjolina · 25/05/2008 13:29

That I had travelled backwards in time to the 1930s without realising it

sorry that quote makes me smile but it's not because of the name Barnaby per se (I think Barnaby is quite sweet, tho it's not Bernard imho), but the desperation of football-dad to get son to do well at under-7 level....

And I speak in my new incarnation of Football Mum

ButterflyMcQueen · 24/05/2008 22:44

two barnabys in ds reception class

Clary · 24/05/2008 22:42

oh ggirl that reminds me of my fave ever MN qute - "focus, Barnaby, focus" heard by Cod (of course) shouted on a touchline by dad of a 7yo...

Think it's the Barnaby bit that makes it tbh.

brimfull · 24/05/2008 19:49

I like it.

Know a 3 yr old Barnaby.

beansprout · 24/05/2008 19:46

No!! Step away from the name!!!

InTheseShoes · 24/05/2008 19:45

We called DS2 "Bernard" when he was a bump, because it went with DS1's real name (it's his best friend in a book...) For quite a while DS1 called DS2 Bernard once he was born. We did consider it, but it would have been a bit trite with DS1's name in the end. I like it, and I love the suggestion that it could be "Barney"

nkf · 24/05/2008 19:35

Yes it would.

misdee · 24/05/2008 19:34

but we dont have any family member called Bernard lol.

i am still so so tempted to use it.

its getting a real mixture of reactions.

I like Alfred, but it would be 'shortened' to Alfie wouldnt it?

Not now.
Seriously, I'd think he'd been named for a family member.

meglet · 24/05/2008 19:28

Insanely cool, and he will grow into it as he gets older.

Jenbot · 24/05/2008 09:43

You know, I really like it.

But then I do like big slobbery dogs, and brown corduroy come to think of it!

CristinaTheAstonishing · 24/05/2008 00:01

Not too keen on Bernard but Bernie is nice.

handlemecarefully · 23/05/2008 23:58

I'm not hugely keen....

Clary · 23/05/2008 23:57

Bernard.

Hmmm yes, Not Now...

It's not really like Archie and Alfie and Stanley tho is it, because they are coming back, hot on the heels of Edward and George.
There is a Sid in DD's swimming class.

Bernard is more like Trevor or Graham or Gordon or Barry isn't it?

Are you have DS then misdee???????? have I missed that (I knew you were pg of course)

orangehead · 23/05/2008 12:32

Really dont like, its oldfashioned, I know some oldfashioned is good, william, harry etc but bernard, archibald and and alfred just no no

belgo · 23/05/2008 12:29

It makes me think of the Bernard in the Shirley Hughes books.

katpotat · 23/05/2008 12:24

My father in law and uncle are both Bernard, the get called Ben and Benny respectively...in the end it doesn't matter what anyone thinks....if you love it that's all that matters

kateri · 23/05/2008 01:04

I like Bernard!

Mind you, I also like Colin and Clive and Nigel... and my son has a name in a similar vein that gets funny looks when I tell people!
