We've decided on a middle name - but how to spell it ?!?!

We both love the name Anabel so it's in! However I have no idea how to spell it as there are so many ways.

MN jury, which one do you think is best? What is the most regular way of spelling it??

  1. Annabelle (too poncy?)
  2. Annabell
  3. Anabel (not finished??)
  4. Anabell
  5. Anabelle (weird?)

Definitely Annabel - one n just looks completely wrong. The only other alternative I think woud be Annabelle which is pretty too!

lollipopmother · 21/05/2008 11:28

Well obviously I don't think it's particularly poncy, although I conceed that sticking Annabell on the end might ponce it up a bit, but Elizabeth in my mind is a classic rather than a poncy name.

Plus it has lots of capabilities to be shortened as well, which was a big issue for me because I've got a short name that you can't get anything out of and I was always envious of people who had nicknames.

Elizabeth is not really poncey surely?

lollipopmother · 21/05/2008 10:41

Cantsleep - I know, bit embarrassed about that actually!

I like correct spellings so I would go for Annabel. Whatever you choose you need 2 n's or you don't have Anna with a short 'a'as in cat you have 'a' as in cake.

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/05/2008 07:42

pmsl at you having such a long list of alternative spellings but missing out the 'correct' one!

Friend just had a baby called Annabel Violet - lovely name.

Blu · 20/05/2008 15:05

Annabel.

modernart · 20/05/2008 14:59

I've got an Annabel, teenager now.

Swedes · 20/05/2008 14:58

Elizabeth is not poncy. Middle names are meant to be a bit poncy, aren't they? Either that or used in a persuasive fashion....in reasonable contemplation of a not inconsiderable inheritance from Aunt Ethel. Trouble is this often backfires when Ethel leaves her fortune to the Cats' Protection League and appoints Elizabeth Ethel as an Executor to make sure her wishes are carried out. Gah.

Elizabeth Annabel is really lovely.

AtheneNoctua · 20/05/2008 14:56

I don't know, you don't get much poncier than the queen herself.

But, I have a suster Elizabeth and she's not poncy at all.

lollipopmother · 20/05/2008 14:27

I don't think Elizabeth is poncy, but I did wonder whether the two together might be a bit poncy. Mind you, I do come from Oxford dharrrrling so poncy would fit in well!

AtheneNoctua · 20/05/2008 14:16

Oh, and I think Elizabeth is poncier than Annabel.

AtheneNoctua · 20/05/2008 14:15

If I was English, I'd spell it Annabel and if I was French I'd spell it Annabelle. Same goes for Isabel vs. Isabelle.

lollipopmother · 20/05/2008 13:54

Thank you everyone who said they are nice names, I feel rather smug now!
