Alora for DD due August.

And middle name suggestions. Last name is Smith.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
thefirebird · 16/05/2025 00:34

The child could never ever visit Italy with the name Alora.

s3tut0y3r · 16/05/2025 00:22

Aurora sounds nicer to me and it can be shortened to Ro.

Alora could get confused with Laura.

I’d like to remind people that different languages and cultures exist outside of your own bubble!!

I think if you are already set on it as a name then maybe don't ask for people's opinions of it on MN if you actually don't want their opinions.

Honestly if you like it use it. But now you know lots of people don't seem to like it. I prefer Elora to Alora. But that's my preference and it doesn't have to match yours

Every name is made up. That’s how it works.

Only on the sense that all words are "made up". But I think you know that apple is a word but dfheigheredxij isn't.

I’m not going to copy and paste the entire internet.
Google the name. Everything says that name either means “the lord is my light” or “my dream”.

Nope. First result is a town in Spain, as is the second, third, fourth and fifth. The sixth is Wikipedia that helpfully tells me that Alora can be a gastropod from the family of wentletraps (whatever they are), a brand of HRT patches, the town Spain again, and then a given name (which says it's a modern version of Elora)

Even when I specify Alora name, it tells me that it means "my dream" in Bentu, "and at that hour" in Spanish, that it's a corruption of elora or Eleanor.

Only on those daft American naming sites that are full of Tragedeighs does it fit what you think it is.

CrushingOnRubies · 15/05/2025 10:20

Reminds of me alohamora too.

Alora rhyme with Nora and Laura. because it could sound like “Eh Laura (what are you on about?)”

not that keen I’m afraid

HugoYorway · 15/05/2025 09:41

Every name is made up. That’s how it works. That's a poor argument usually in defence of a name that posters don't respond favourably to.
There's a big difference according to when it was made up, and whether it has been in use.
The Al- beginning isn't a Hebrew one.

No they won’t

OK, but the majority of posters on this thread tend to agree with me.

Makes me think of suet.

This ^

ChorizoDog · 15/05/2025 07:00

You asked what people thought and they told you. Don’t ask the question if you don’t want the answer 🤷🏼‍♀️

Personally, I think it’s pretty and had no idea it was used in Italian. Obviously I have heard of Flora & Atora, but I don’t think these are things she would be teased for.

Most names have a lovely meaning if you look for it, doesn’t necessarily mean they sound lovely. But “margarine” and “my dream” do sound similar so just go for it if you’re not bothered about people mixing the two up.

pompey38 · 14/05/2025 22:48

HollieHock · 13/05/2025 22:27

Sounds like a margarine.

Double LL in Italian but “Allora" is a versatile word used to express various meanings, including "then," "so," "well," or to introduce a new topic or pause for thought.
Not a good choice for a name

Here is what your link said:
Alora feels like a hybrid name – part authentic, part synthetic – maybe because it is. It squeaked onto the Top 1000 in 2017 as part of the trend for girls' names starting and ending with A, and has since increased its popularity, recently entering the Top 200. It is likely a spelling variant of Elora, but also sounds a lot like the Italian word allora, meaning "so, then, therefore, well.*

Not exactly an endorsement, @Salmonisthebestfish

Youvebeenframed · 14/05/2025 22:36

Don’t come asking for opinions and then get arsey because you got opinions 🤷🏼‍♀️
If you like it - use it
You clearly don’t care what others think anyway; so on the whole a wasted exercise 😵‍💫

FWIW I also saw the suet reference first glance and prefer “Laura”

@SalmonisthebestfishAlora is my daughter’s name. Her middle name is Grace.

The name Alora finds its origins in the African - Bantu culture of Botswana. Derived from the Bantu language, Alora carries the profound meaning of My Dream.

she was a Rainbow baby and given my DH is African it really fits.

So sorry you had to read this thread!

Your daughter has a beautiful name

She claimed I was “ignoring posters” because I had not reposed in less than 24 hours?? I am allowed to defend myself.
I’m not an influencer, I have a life outside of this thread.

Not just that one, like every reply you’ve posted has been so defensive. I get it, you probably didn’t expect so many people to dislike the name so strongly but you don’t actually have to listen to us and you could just use it anyway.

I doubt you’re going to convince anyone that it’s a nice name unless they already think so but if you like it, what does it matter?

Salmonisthebestfish · 14/05/2025 22:22

Missey85 · 14/05/2025 02:32

You asked the question! No need to get pissy at people because they've answered the fact that we all thought the same enough with the made up names! You'll be back in a few years moaning because little alora gets teased at school because even a child knows it's made up!

Every name is made up. That’s how it works.

Only if it has cultural/family significance, otherwise people will think it's a "try too hard" made up name.

No they won’t

You can’t get annoyed asking what people think on a UK based site. The UK is small compared to say the US where you might be from.

I don’t speak Italian but know that alora is like “ummm” and that’s the first thing I thought of. Second thing I thought of was Aloha but I have LILO and Stitch on my mind.

Why are you ignoring the poster who says that El means God not Al? I don’t know which is correct but I would be checking before using Alora.
