Does the name Bella sound too sweet with our surname

Derwenie · 07/05/2025 02:21

DH and I are expecting our first baby soon - a little girl.

Our surname is Darling.

Our absolute favourite name is Bella middle name will be Julia. Im worried Bella Julia Darling sounds too sweet?

Other options which we aren’t as sold on are Zara, Grace and Anna.

Thoughts?

See I think you need to go with a longer name to detract from the Darling bit - I’m not a fan of Bella with the surname

Dorothy Darling
Matilda Darling
Juliette Darling
Henrietta Darling

Could you go with a stronger first name and then use Bella as the nickname?

Arabella Darling
Annabel Darling
Isobel Darling
Mirabel Darling
?

Not keen on Bella Darling (makes me think of The Tweenies) but love these alternatives.

Calliopespa · 07/05/2025 08:14

I actually quite like just Julia.

Taytayslayslay · 07/05/2025 08:14

How about Juliette, such a pretty name and would suit your last names!

TotemPolly · 07/05/2025 08:10

Names I'm really liking at the moment are Hannah or Leah , I think they go with your surname as well .

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 07/05/2025 08:07

Isabella?

TheCurious0range · 07/05/2025 08:06

My niece is Isobel nn Bella and taking her out you notice that every third child is called Bella, so I'd avoid on that basis alone.
Something more traditional would work Catherine/Kate
Alice

Other names we’ve considered but ruled out for being long were Annabelle and Madeleine (Maddy) - maybe Annabelle nicknamed Belle or Bella is better?

That’s what I’d do OP. You can still call her Bella but it just makes it all a bit more sophisticated - which she might appreciate as she gets older.

However I think Bella is actually better than Grace with Darling. Aside from being an historic figure, as a virtue name Grace is just too much with Darling. It’s almost like Angel Darling or Charity Darling.

Ah, you nearly got me there!
BJ Darling!

I thought it didn’t matter as long as you love the name but the initials are a lifelong curse for teasing

Lighthouse Grace Darling? I mean, impressive heroine but I wouldn’t name a baby for her. It’s a bit twee.

Plus so many boats are now called Grace Darling after the heroic lighthouse keeper.

I see it every time I go to a harbour or a marina

spoonbillstretford · 07/05/2025 07:59

Yes, Bella is definitely more often a dog's name in the UK. I also knew a Bella spaniel. 🙂

WhatMe123 · 07/05/2025 07:58

Maybe Annabelle instead?

EarlyMorningWork · 07/05/2025 07:58

My friends dog was called Bella, lovely spaniel xx

I’d choose a fuller version of the name

MostlyHappyMummy · 07/05/2025 07:58

Your name choices are lovely but I don't think anything will work perfectly with that surname.
What's your surname? Or was your surname?

BanditsWife · 07/05/2025 07:57

I don’t think Bella Darling sounds any sweeter than Julia Darling or Zara Darling. Not sure what others are hearing that I’m not? 🤷🏻‍♀️

spoonbillstretford · 07/05/2025 07:52

Or you could just go full Blackadder and call her Bob Queenie George Darling. 😊

More seriously Kate is nice though.

AngelinaFibres · 07/05/2025 07:50

BJ Darling!

If she's going to secondary school in the U k in the future don't saddle her with this.

Could you go with a stronger first name and then use Bella as the nickname?

Arabella Darling
Annabel Darling
Isobel Darling
Mirabel Darling
?

I would do this. You can call her Bella day to day when her surname is not used and for formal full name stuff she is a version of these options.

spoonbillstretford · 07/05/2025 07:47

I think Juliette is nicer than Julia, IMO.

AngelinaFibres · 07/05/2025 07:46

mathanxiety · 07/05/2025 02:29

I think it would be too much, sadly. I also think Grace Darling would be too much, and would sound like Gray Starling.

Julia Grace Darling would be lovely, or Juliana Grace Darling

Zara Isobel, Zara Grace - both nice.

Anna Darling is a but plain imo. Annabel Darling otoh would be nice.

Grace Darling might be a tricky one to carry off given the famous holder of that name long before your daughter.

thecatneuterer · 07/05/2025 07:45

It's awful. Even without the surname, which makes it so much worse, I think it's awful. I just come across too many cats named Bella.

Clarefromwork · 07/05/2025 07:41

I think it sounds really nice.

other suggestions :

Esmae Darling

Florence Darling (flo)

Lukah Darling

Surreyblah · 07/05/2025 07:26

Hadn’t thought of the initials but agree you shouldn’t do BJ, or indeed a longer name that you intend to shorten to a name starting with B with Julia.

total nonsense

😂

cardboardvillage · 07/05/2025 07:36

Isobel Darling. Belle/Bella for short

PenguinLover24 · 07/05/2025 07:35

I like it!

I also like:
Grace Julia Darling

Short and ending in A I also like:
Amelia Julia Darling
Ella Julia Darling
Mia Julia Darling
Ava Julia Darling

I love a good baby name thread it's so exciting! I really like your second name! X
