DH and I are expecting our first baby soon - a little girl.

Our surname is Darling.

Our absolute favourite name is Bella middle name will be Julia. Im worried Bella Julia Darling sounds too sweet?

Other options which we aren’t as sold on are Zara, Grace and Anna.

Thoughts?

Zara Darling is a fabulous name

Lnew · 08/05/2025 22:05

You're seriously asking if you should call your child BJ Darling? Blowjob darling? Never mind it being to cutesy, it's like a sex worker name.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Icewithmyslice · 08/05/2025 22:00

No help at all but just to say, I love your surname!

Other names we’ve considered but ruled out for being long were Annabelle and Madeleine (Maddy) - maybe Annabelle nicknamed Belle or Bella is better?

Think through when her full name will actually be used.

In childhood - hardly ever. Yes, it will be written down on documents, but your child will rarely be referred to by her full name. When she is, and if she's known as Bella, then she will still be called Bella Darling. Apart from the times when she is (name read off a list) "Annabelle Darling... Who's that... Oh, is that Bella? Sorry, Bella, we've put Annabelle on your badge".

When she's older - it will be used more. So it's a question of whether you want to give her the flexibility of having a longer name to fall back on (and accepting that the world will then call her Annabelle or Annie or something else), or not.

I think Bella Darling is fine. I know what you mean, but any name with Darling has that issue, and people get used to other people's names very quickly.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 08/05/2025 14:37

Darling is an excellent surname! Unfortunately, I have the accent that would make me sound like a pretentious person if I were to shout, "<First name> Darling!" down the street 😁

Anna Darling and Annabel Darling sound lovely. Please avoid the BJ initials. A boy in my year at school never lived those initials down!

Arancia · 08/05/2025 13:52

What's wrong with having a sweet, cute name? I much prefer such names for girls over hideous unisex names, or modern names. Bella is a beautiful name, and Darling is a great last name.

Zara Darling is really nice. Please don’t choose Juli - it’s grannyish and not in a stylish way. I have a granny name and HATE it. Your child will want to fit in.

Quite interested by this as it's genuinely the first outright negative I've ever seen on here about the name Julia (assuming that's what you meant to type, rather than Juliet(te)). I always notice that it's one of the small number of names that tends to get almost universal approval. Not that any name will ever be liked by absolutely anyone.

Anyway, I'm in the 'not an a ending' name camp for Darling. Maddy/Kate/Juliet etc all sound great with Darling.

Frostynoman · 08/05/2025 13:16

Isabella if you’re worried. Sod others. Your surname makes me think of Peter Pan. Bella Darling is not too sweet IMO. If you really don’t want to then I think Grace Darling has a beautiful vibe to it

Britneyfan · 08/05/2025 13:13

I’d personally definitely go with Wendy Darling (how could you not take an opportunity to name your child after the Peter Pan character?!)

MakingItRight · 08/05/2025 13:11

With a name like that you need a takes no shit first name

Catherine
Eleanor
Patricia
Jessica
Antoinette
Verity

CoffeeBeansGalore · 08/05/2025 13:06

As pp have mentioned, Juliet Darling is lovely. Juliet Annabel Darling or
Juliet Bella Darling go quite nicely.

MaggieBsBoat · 08/05/2025 13:05

Zoe Darling?

dollyblue01 · 08/05/2025 13:03

Annabelle sounds nice with your surname, I love Bella but it doesn’t sound quite right.

Yes, Bella is definitely more often a dog's name in the UK. I also knew a Bella spaniel. 🙂

My best best friend is a Bella, she always comments that it is a pet name and whenever she introduces herself some one says "I have/had a dog/cat/horse/guinea pig called Bella"

MrsPlantagenet · 08/05/2025 12:55

No, ‘Bella Darling’ is ridiculous.

My granddaughters name is Bella Darling, I don’t think it’s fair to say ridiculous, perhaps not to everyone’s taste but we should try and remember when commenting on threads that often these are real people’s names and we can speak of our own personal dislike without insulting them generally.

I thought I had the nicest surname ever but you’ve 100% beat it with Darling. How absolutely lovely, I think any name would sound good honestly. These are just some names I like:

Mirabel Julia Darling
Sybil Julia Darling
Felicity Julia Darling
Heather Julia Darling
Mallory Julia Darling
Camille Julia Darling

Blueplu · 08/05/2025 07:25

What a lovely surname!
I think it’s absolutely lovely and if you like it go for it.
i think it works and is a beautiful combination 💓

Rowen32 · 07/05/2025 22:40

Not Zara, then you've got the 'ah' sound twice and it's all a bit samey..

ninjahamster · 07/05/2025 22:32

Annabelle Darling is lovely and could easily be shortened to Belle/Bella.
Bellatrix?

I sorry but this is soooo funny 🤣. My regards to BJ @LondonLady1980. If you have a son, were you ever tempted to call him BJ Jnr 😂😂😂. Apologies for the childishness, your husbands names are class 👏 👏 👏

We have two sons, neither of which are BJ Junior and there are no BJs involved in any part of their name 🤣

vladimirVsvolodymr · 07/05/2025 22:00

LondonLady1980 · 07/05/2025 07:06

I would reconsider giving your daughter a name where her initials would start with BJ.

My husbands first two initials are BJ and he has received torment over it from as young as he can remember, and I imagine it would be a 100 times worse for a girl (should it ever get out).

His bank cards and his driving licence and bills that came to the house all state his name as being Mr BJ (surname) and he hates it. There’s no escaping it.

The only way to avoid it would be to not disclose her middle name to anyone, but if she has to spend her life hiding her middle name from anyone then what is the point of even giving it to her?

I would go with the option of Isobel (or something similar) and use Bella as a nickname.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 07/05/2025 21:13

Oh blimey yes it is too sweet

Bella is pretty saccharine anyways

I’d use it as a nickname - so Annabel / Isabel / Christabel Darling nn Bella - then if she grows up to hate it she has options

You cannot have BJ Darling either - so maybe Annabel Grace Julia to fix that

sandpiperspring · 07/05/2025 21:12

Annabella Darling flows really nicely IMO, and Bella is an easy NN from Annabella.

Sleepnplay · 07/05/2025 19:23

I think I'd be tempted to go with a longer full name, with a hard sounding ending to offset the sweetness of Darling (which is lovely IMO!),

So Isobel Darling, Annabel Darling etc, with the option to shorten.

Or something like Harriet Darling (Hattie), Emilia Darling (Emmie or Millie).

I'd def steer clear if BJ initials, particularly with Darling as a surname!
