Just wondering on the general opinion of this name and which spelling people prefer. DH isn’t bothered about spelling, I’m not keen on Keira but don’t mind the other two.
Thanks all!

Ciara. It is the correct spelling.

It only takes one correction for people to pronounce/spell it correctly. Just as people would pronounce/spell a name correctly from any other ethnicity if told.

Catnapsallday · 30/04/2025 17:44

Where I'm from Ciara is always pronounced, as Kee-ar-rah.
Very pretty name, btw, however I have a hard time believing that one would have to settle for a name that is not really a favourite when there are hundreds of names to choose from!

How do you get See-air-uh from Ciara?!

The singer maybe.

ohmondew · 30/04/2025 17:43

Ciara. Please don't take a name from another culture and bastardise it by spelling it wrong.

moveoveralice · 30/04/2025 17:39

Good grief, none of them.

Thanks all. I prefer the spelling Ciara but have no Irish links. Not sure if that’s a problem? I’m not sure if the mispronunciations would bother me too much? I don’t know.
To be honest, it’s not my favourite name but it’s the only one we can agree on. We’ve still got time but I feel like we’ve gone through every name in the world and not settled on one.
I love Eden and DH loves Freya, but neither of us like the other.

Do you like - Thea, Mila, Lila, Cleo, Eva, Nia, Seren, Kaia, Seren, Lena, Indi?

How do you get See-air-uh from Ciara?!

Thats pretty close to how you’d sound it out in English, and more logical than the keera pronunciation to an English speaker. I personally would have gone for See-ah-ra before I heard somebody introduce themself with the Irish pronunciation

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/04/2025 17:11

I prefer the Ciara spelling, but you will get people who think that is pronounced kee-ah-ra.

Ciara definitely.

abracadabra1980 · 30/04/2025 16:33

None - I don't like any names of this ilk.

What ilk would that be?

supercalifragilistic123 · 30/04/2025 16:38

We both loved the name but this was the main reason we didn’t go for it. We just couldn’t see the ‘right’ way to spell it and didn’t want to have to have our DD constantly correcting people on the pronunciation.

YourWinter · 30/04/2025 16:36

Ciara

OnArainyNight · 30/04/2025 16:35

Ciara, definitely.

Kira, if you must, but definitely not Keira. Shouldn’t Keira be pronounced Kay-ra?

Cabbagefamily · 30/04/2025 16:33

Alarae · 30/04/2025 15:47

What pronunciation are you going for as I would pronounce Ciara (See-air-uh) differently to Kira/Keira (Kear-uh).

I probably wouldn’t go for Kira as I’m pretty sure it means Killer in Japanese, or at least had that meaning thanks to Death Note (famous manga novel about someone killing people).

How do you get See-air-uh from Ciara?!

abracadabra1980 · 30/04/2025 16:33

None - I don't like any names of this ilk.

PrincessOfPreschool · 30/04/2025 16:30

Chiara is a well known name (Key-are-uh) and so I thought Ciara was pronounced the same way (I would assume Italian!), just a different spelling. I know Keira pronunciation because of Knightley and Starmer. Kira, I wouldn't be sure if it were Kear-uh or Kye-ruh.

mathanxiety · 30/04/2025 16:25

Ciara is the correct spelling in Irish.

Kira is an international name with multiple meanings depending on culture. Cultures include Russian and other Slav languages, Greek, Japanese.

Keira (as in Knightly) is an anglicisation of Kira afaik.

If you're in Britain and have no Irish links, I'd go for Kira.

mackawhack · 30/04/2025 16:20

Isn't it Kiera not Keira? Prefer Ciara

Burgeoning7 · 30/04/2025 16:11

When I first saw the name Ciara as a kid, I pronounced it see-air-uh like the singer! But now I have a friend with the name pronounced keer-uh and love it.

I would go for Ciara or Keira.

Kira might get mistaken for Kyra (Kai-rah)

Ciara is not pronounced key-ah-rah (that's Chiara or Kiara if you're a Lion King 2 fan)

BusyUser · 30/04/2025 16:10

Another vote for the original spelling of Ciara, it’s a very pretty name.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 30/04/2025 16:10

Ciara is the correct spelling of the name!

feelingbleh · 30/04/2025 16:09

Keira

Skirtless · 30/04/2025 16:08

Ciara is the correct spelling.

ncforschoolhelp · 30/04/2025 16:06

Ceira is a nice spelling I think. Either Keira or Ceira would be easy to know the correct pronunciation.
