We can’t have Lily or Olivia so thought this could be a nice alternative. Thoughts please

Thumbs up from me

LilyJosephine · 03/05/2025 01:31

I’ve always heard it pronounced like Lily with a “ah” on the end or similarly Lilian without the “n” - and being that those names are more popular/familiar in the UK than Lilia, I suspect that will be most people’s instinct on seeing the name.

PassivAggressivHaus · 02/05/2025 23:36

I don't like Liliana at all.

timoteigirl · 02/05/2025 22:37

Yes but maybe prefer Liliana.

@SwedishEdith , which syllable would you stress? The Lil or the ee?
LIL-ee-a (like in Lilian or Jennifer) or Lil-EE-a (like in Sophia or Maria)?

The ee I think. I've never said the name out loud so sitting in the house alone trying to work out what I say.

I'd pronounce it Lil Ee A unless I'd been told otherwise.

PassivAggressivHaus · 30/04/2025 09:19

I'd say LIL-ya, 2 syllables.

PassivAggressivHaus · 30/04/2025 09:10

@Marooney , it could be LILy-a or LIL-ee-A, or Lil-EE-a, I suppose.

It is pronounced LIL-ya, how are you pronouncing it?!

LilyJosephine · 28/04/2025 23:43

Surely the majority of people won’t think sanitary towels? Lilia White is such an old reference that even most parents with school age kids won’t have heard of it (I’m mid 40’s and I hadn’t till Mumsnet), let alone the kids themselves.

Okay, it might be worth knowing about if your surname is White but otherwise I can’t see it being an issue. Yes, Lilette’s is a well known brand but that hasn’t affected the use of Lily, Lillian or even famous Lilibet (which sounds quite similar) so I can’t imagine that being a problem for Lilia either.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 28/04/2025 20:31

HonoriaBulstrode · 25/04/2025 22:36

It was a brand of sanitary towels.

Yes.. I don’t mind it but this did spring to mind

How about Livia?

Or Lucia

Luella

Leonie

Cassia

Saskia

SoOxon · 28/04/2025 16:41

Is your surname White?

Lilia/Lillets - anyone who has used a dispensing machine in the Ladies would have bought one, towel or tampon.

trainboundfornowhere · 28/04/2025 16:35

I prefer Lilias but that could be a familiarity thing. I’m in Scotland. Lilia is pretty though. Lydia, Lynette and Laura could be other possibilities.

mathanxiety · 28/04/2025 16:15

Leah is such a gorgeous name.

Along the same L lines - Leonie?

LeaCFBC · 28/04/2025 15:56

Lillia reminds me of Lilo Lil or Lill -Lets , sorry... it's an old reference, along with the sanitary towels...But there are so many girls with L names now too, especially derivatives of Olivia.....Lily Lyla Lyra Lola Layla Livia and also my name, Leah ( but I'm 55), ..Lillibet is obviously getting more popular too.
Would avoid but up to you, obviously.
Similar, feminine , but different is Eleni ?

mathanxiety · 28/04/2025 15:36

How about Lydia, Lela (pr 'leela), or Livia?

Lilia is nice but it does remind me of sanitary products and others may have the same association.

LilyJosephine · 28/04/2025 15:11

Stunning imo. Lilia is so pretty and elegant and on my own list. I don’t know why it is so underused in the UK when Lily and Olivia are very popular (Lilia is much more popular internationally especially in Eastern Europe). Maybe people worry it will get misheard as Lydia? But I’m not sure that’s a big deal. I suppose just like with Lily there might be spelling issues -Lily/Lilly or Lilia/Lillia.

Firsttimebabymummy · 26/04/2025 18:26

I'm too young to know about the brand mentioned and really like the name!

Would also suggest
Lydia
Lucinda
Lilith

MrsMacYorkie · 26/04/2025 18:17

Lilias ? - lots in my family tree (although some were known as Lily), but it’s not a name I ever see come up now.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 26/04/2025 17:16

I immediately thought of sanitary towels too. So it’d be a no for me.

iseethembloom · 26/04/2025 16:58

Lilya 4ever 😢🥲😭

The most heartbreaking and depressing thing I’ve ever seen, and I include all films, documentaries, mini series… everything.. in this.

SwedishEdith · 26/04/2025 16:39

I don't like it but I'm not sure why. There are no strong letters or sounds to it so sounds quite bland and forgettable. Rhymes with sillier but that's just me. It sounds made up although I can see it's a longstanding name.

What other names are in the running?
