So husband and I have only one name between us that we agree on: Darcy. I love it but recently the thought of arsey popped into my head. We live in Scotland if that has any bearing. I am English but husband is Scottish. Am I overthinking it and it’s still a nice name or is it definitely going to haunt us? If you say it’s a bad idea please suggest an alternative as we are really back to the drawing board after discussing names for months! 😭

I immediately think of the word arse when I hear the name Darcy, how can you not? It would be a definite no from me.

GameOfJones · 16/04/2025 10:44

I really like the name but to me, Darcey is the way to spell it for a girl. Darcy is the version also used for boys and more common as a surname spelling. Just personal preference though.

Arsey*

Wintersdream93 · 16/04/2025 10:43

I'm called Darcy. Yes Ive been nicknamed arsed when in school or people have shortened it to Darce which I hate. But I don't hate my name

My friends granddaughter is Darcy. It's a lovely name . I don't know what you mean by being Scottish has to do with it though.

Not saying being Scottish has anything to do with it. Just thought I’d mention it because I’m not Scottish myself and certain things sound better/worse in different parts of the UK and some names are more/less popular in different parts.

I’m in Scotland and know a little Darcy. Never occurred to me to think ‘Arsey’! I don’t think kids of today really use stuff like that as insults anyway, it’s a bit too old school!

Yeah it's a bit 80s playground isn't it? Kids are far too sophisticated these days to do rhyming swears 😀

Crikeyalmighty · 16/04/2025 10:27

My friend has a toddler called this - I wouldn’t pick it myself , but if you like it that’s all that matters-

LavenderBlue19 · 16/04/2025 10:21

My friend has a child called Darcey. It's a lovely name, I had never thought of arsey. Children will make a cruel name out of anything though, you can't escape it whatever you name your child. If it's not the first name it's the surname, if it's not the name it's their looks. It's unavoidable.

I love it. My friend has a Darcy and she’s lovely. But I loved the name already because of Darcey Bussell
congratulations!

Coffeeishot · 16/04/2025 10:16

Nobody is going to hear arse,

Pregnantandscrewed · 16/04/2025 10:05

Airwaterfire · 16/04/2025 10:01

? It’s been a name long before Darcey Bussell, so how is it celebrity inspired?

Thanks, yeah I’m not bothered about it ‘dating’ or being a celebrity name. Almost everything is a celebrity name and trends change. I don’t care about that. Not bothered about opinions on the name at all, other than the particular issue I’ve highlighted in my OP. I’m still torn as I love the name but not if everyone is going to hear arse 😂

Definitely makes me think of arsey. It's likely to date badly plus it has several different spellings.
It's a celebrity-inspired name, and it has passed its peak.
I don't see any appeal other than a ballerina had the name, in which case, you might like Margot or Tamara.

I think a lot of names will have an unfortunate rhyming word. I regularly call my own daughter Grotty Lottie, also rhymes with potty, botty etc…no nice rhyming words. I remember a friend being worried in pregnancy about ‘scabby Abbie’ but still went with the name as she loved it and has no regrets (and scabby Abbie has never been a thing!).

RaraRachael · 16/04/2025 08:53

Not keen just because it has the "arse" sound in the middle.
As kids we used to say D-ARSE-y.

Yes we were young and very silly

itsgettingweird · 16/04/2025 08:52

I know a Darcey and she’s an absolutely lovely 15yo girl.

MinnieCauldwell · 16/04/2025 08:51

I love it, I know a Darcy who is mid 20s, lovely women, never thought of arsey myself, ever.

I went to school with a Darcy. No opinions on her but I think it’s a nice name.

flyinghen · 16/04/2025 08:48

My Darcey gets called “Dars” but not arsey. I love it!

Middleagedstriker · 16/04/2025 08:47

Not my cup of tea. Reminds me if Mr Darcy who I found pretty annoying.

Calliopespa · 16/04/2025 08:44

Truthfully, yes. I’ve seen it written d’Arsey to poke fun. However most names will have potential for this kind of thing .

rainbowstardrops · 16/04/2025 08:26

I taught a Darcey once and to be totally honest with you, I never once made the connection of arsey! It’s a lovely name

WaltzingWaters · 16/04/2025 08:24

It’s such a beautiful name.

I wouldn’t worry about arsey- kids can be mean and if they want to they’ll come up with a mean nn no matter the name, but hopefully it won’t ever be an issue.
