Hello- please be kind I’ve seen some awful comments on similar posts !

myself and partner finally agree on our little girls name. Ada

however the next barrier is how we spell this. I don’t really like the Ada spelling as it is very very short. I liked the spelling Adah, I think it added a softness to it but does it look like I’m trying to spell ADHD 🤣But I know it could also be spelt Aida.

so….

Ada
Adah
Aida

kindness please 🙏🏼

Ada 🥰

bettydavieseyes · 08/04/2025 07:40

I know someone who called their baby Ayda and I think it's beautiful like that.

user1492757084 · 08/04/2025 07:38

We no longer live in Biblical times so ...
Ada is the right way for today.

Ada is gorgeous.

EmotionallyWeird · 05/04/2025 22:02

Adah is a valid name, it's Hebrew, but I don't know how it's usually pronounced and from what little I know about other Hebrew names, I'd probably expect it to be Add-a rather than Aid-a.

Aida is Aye-ee-da.

I've never met anyone who didn't pronounce Ada as Aid-a. I don't think you'll have any problem with that spelling.

MirandaBlu · 05/04/2025 01:39

For what it's worth, Ada and Adah are the same name, same pronunciation in Hebrew (עָדָה) - just different ways to transliterate. I would not think of one as more legitimate than the other, but I will say that I've typically seen the (modern) Hebrew name written as Ada in English/in the Latin alphabet unless it specifically refers to an historical/Biblical Adah.

Totally subjectively, Adah feels to me like someone that might have a close connection to either Judaism or Christianity (because the Old Testament is important to both) OR perhaps to some traditional uses in the USA and the Caribbean. Ada feels more like a stand-alone English name not necessarily as close to its cultural roots. (But it may be worth noting that Ada is pronounced AH-da in a lot of European languages.)

Aida I would read as a simplified version of Aïda (eye-EE-dah).

Iwiicit · 05/04/2025 00:39

I like the name but don't understand why people change spellings?
I don't look at the word cauliflower and think, 'No, I will spell it as khollleeeflour,' .

SnowFrogJelly · 05/04/2025 00:37

No other way to spell it!

LilyJosephine · 05/04/2025 00:31

I think Aida and Adah might have the problem of mispronunciation as well as likely misspelling so would be a no go for me.

Despite its trendiness I think Ada is a nice name for a girl/woman. I like that it looks simple and elegant, that it’s a cool palindrome and has a great feminist historical role model in Lovelace. To me spelling it Adah or Aida would ruin that.

nocoolnamesleft · 04/04/2025 23:35

If you want the sound Ada, you need to use the spelling Ada.

LadyGAgain · 04/04/2025 23:25

Ada
Adah looks yoonique even though its roots are biblical!
Aida - that is pronounced very differently - like the opera.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 04/04/2025 23:18

Ada. Keep it simple

KnickerlessParsons · 04/04/2025 23:09

Aida is pronounced Ah-ee-da usually.

Ada is lovely.

PassMeTheCookies · 04/04/2025 23:05

I know an Ayda.

Adah would make me pronounce Ah-Da.

Aid makes me think of aids.

I like Ada best, but Ayda would be better than the ones you’ve suggested if Ada is a no.

ThunderFog · 04/04/2025 22:54

How about Aeda?

CrimsonVioletTeal · 04/04/2025 21:20

As almost everyone else says, stick with Ada.

I'd pronounce Aida like the opera (Ay-EE-Dah). I've got the Grand March from Aida running through my head right now.

I haven't come across any Adahs, but would assume the pronunciation was Ah-dah.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 04/04/2025 18:39

Ada is how the name is spelled, so that's how you should spell it. If you don't want a short name, choose a longer one!

Nursemumma92 · 04/04/2025 18:36

Yes Adah and Ada are pronounced differently. Ada is beautiful although I'm biased as my DD2 is Ada.

Shinyandnew1 · 04/04/2025 18:31

mayse10 · 04/04/2025 16:30

Thank you for the comments however I would just like to point out Adah is not a made up spelling? It derives from the biblical wife’s of Lamech and daughter of Elon in the Bible in Christian tradition

It's a different name, with a different pronunciation. If you like the pronunciation of Adah, call her that.

You can't spell it Adah and pronounce it Ada.

AmiablePedant · 04/04/2025 17:30

mayse10 · 04/04/2025 16:43

@AmiablePedantperhaps they did first! I never insinuated otherwise.

There is no "perhaps" about it if you're invoking names from the Old Testament.book of Genesis! It was not (gasp) written by Christians! You are claiming the information solely for the "Christian tradition" and erasing the culture that first produced Genesis. (I'm neither Jewish nor Christian but I don't like sloppy research.) And you are also ignoring the proper Hebrew pronunciation of "Adah."

BeaAndBen · 04/04/2025 17:16

Ada is lovely.
Adah is pronounced completely differently
Aida is the title character of an opera and pronounce a-EE-da. Strictly speaking, spelled Aïda, but these days most people don’t use ï

FigPig · 04/04/2025 17:16

If you’re naming her Adah because it’s from the Old Testament, then you know it’s not said Ada. It’s a different name. Essentially you’ve listed 3 separate names but you want the pronunciation Ada. So call her Ada!

boysmuminherts · 04/04/2025 17:14

Ada, but isn't Robbie Williams' wife Ayda? I would pronounce Aida as Eye ee da so avoid that.

Offtobuttonmoontovisitmrspoon · 04/04/2025 17:12

Leave it, it’s lovely as it is. Other spellings look weird.

ZiggyZowie · 04/04/2025 17:11

Ayda

purpleme12 · 04/04/2025 17:10

To be fair, I really don't think Adah is made up.

And I believe it's pronounced differently to Ada
