Tybalt?

Hi,
I was thinking Tybalt as the name for the baby boy I’m expecting. I think it’s a lovely name but I’m slightly worried about the Romeo/Juliet implications as well.
For the middle name we were considering Ripley, so the name would be Tybalt Ripley, as again think the name is lovely.
Could we possibly get away with naming our son this without people thinking he’s the Romeo + Juliet character!!!

OP posts:

I really like the name Tybalt. Have been reading the edited Shakespeare series with DC and wondering why some names are popular now and some aren't. I don't think it's necessarily to do with the nature of the character. Tybalt, to me, has a great sound.

No, it’s more like Turr-lock.

Thanks for correcting me, I love it, the Irish get all the good names 🤣

SocialEvent · 04/04/2025 17:26

Oui! Also a great name

whoopsnomore · 04/04/2025 17:24

You could go the whole hog and take the French version, Thibault - pronounced "Tee-bo" - then you could have "beau" for short? Non?

its a good name for a cat. I don’t think it’s very kind for a child / man.

I was just coming on here to say we called out tabby cat Tybalt (Tibby). Having said which, I love Tybalt Ripley and I think you should do it!

Lobsterteapot · 04/04/2025 16:34

I mean no one will use the middle name so whatevs. Do you like “Ty” cos that is what it will be shortened to for all eternity.

Cobwebbingly · 04/04/2025 16:31

What about Turlough? If I remember correctly it’s pronounced Tull - uk. Please any Irish mums correct me if I’m wrong, I only heard it from Dr Who and they pronounced it incorrectly

No, it’s more like Turr-lock.

Indeed. I went through a Romeo and Juliet theme of cat naming once.

Dreadful as a boy's name though.

DrFosterWentToGloucester23 · 04/04/2025 14:59

If you like it, it’s fine. Kids won’t bully him for his name. It will just be his name! Slightly outing but I teach a Messi, Mercurio, Apple, Blessing and Prince (amongst other names MN would consider ‘out there’) Kids don’t care.

Dare to buy a backpack that isn’t black and Nike though …

Poonu · 04/04/2025 14:43

Sounds like equipment used in real life and I studied R & J.

Treesarenotforeating · 04/04/2025 14:41

Pick something a bit less ‘out there’ poor kid , how’s he gonna feel when he’s a teenager with that daft name

muddyford · 04/04/2025 14:25

Sounds like a piece of construction equipment. Tie-bolt. Ripley is dreadful.

Leanin9 · 04/04/2025 14:17

I like it, not sure what pp dislike

not ripley though, that’s way too talented mr ripley and ‘rip’ isn’t a nice sound or word

If you are looking for names starting with Ty, in the Netherlands there is a first name Tycho (pronounced Tee-Co).

it’s an option I guess.

Needmorelego · 04/04/2025 13:56

I'd say it's the total opposite 😂

The character was a total little gobshite to be fair. Aggressive, impulsive, not much of a thinker and dies young whilst fighting someone else's battles. OP, you might have found it during a Google search and it fits your 'ty' requirement but it's honestly not a pleasant association for a little boy or young man.

weegiemum · 04/04/2025 13:56

My dog is called Tibby! Don’t do it!

Needmorelego · 04/04/2025 13:56

It’s sounds very trailer trash.

No, it's awful.
Ripley isn't much better either, makes me think of "The Talented Mr. Ripley"

There's no point in asking people what they think of the name if Romeo and Juliet didn't exist. It does exist and that's what a lot of people will think of when they hear Tybalt.

Where do you live? You say you aren't in the UK so 14 year olds bullying kids won't apply. Not much point asking on a site which is mainly occupied by people from the UK if you're somewhere where Tybalt is a perfectly acceptable name. You might be able to find a name used in the country you are in which is better than Tybalt but fits your other criteria.

I agree with this.

It screams 'things my parents like'.

It's like when you meet a tiny Sansa or a little Chewbacca and you just die a bit inside for them.

JustSawJohnny · 04/04/2025 13:44

It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it?

I do think you'd be setting your child up for a life of questioning, probable sniggering and R&J references.

You could at least opt for a more traditional middle name so they have the option of going by that if they hate it!

MrsCastle · 04/04/2025 13:44

Great for a cat!

Tybalt is a perfect name for an XL bully dog.

I was going to say it’s a good name for a pet rabbit 😂

Tybalt Ripley?
Perfect name for a sexy baddy in a bodice ripper book.

"Tybalt Ripley stalked across the office like a tiger. His perfectly pressed charcoal suit clinging to the outline of his biceps suggestively. He suddenly stopped at Juliet's desk and studied her with his amber flecked eyes. 'Remind me who you are?' He growled.,....."

'your cousin.' Juliet replied, before returning to her keyboard. 'Now do up your tie, all the way to the top, please, and get these receipts filed before your probation officer gets here'.
