@beasmithwentworth , Grin
Maybe it's how 'Fizz' said it as "Jooood" is what puts me off. I miss the old Pip!

beasmithwentworth · 04/04/2025 11:23

I loved the name jude when I went to name my son in 2010 but was put off by Jude law as he was such a twat. Plus there was a jude in the archers at the time who was awful. Plus jude the obscure etc.. but I got over all of that and went with it as I loved the name itself so much.

Bluelavenders · 04/04/2025 07:53

There’s a big difference between Sara, which is a well known name in most countries and Jude, which happens to be the German word for a Jew

I’m actually surprised how one footballer can lead to Jude becoming so fashionable in the UK? I wonder how long it will last.

SoftandQuiet · 04/04/2025 06:54

I like it but, nah, nah, na, na, na, nah, nahhh

I’m sure there are lots of lovely associations with the name Jude but the fact is that statistically it became popular because of a celeb - Jude Law (rather than any present day footballer or past Saint associations).

If you go to Darkergreener (sorry can’t do links on phone), it makes it clearer to see that there were hardly any Jude’s (between 20-30 a year) before Mr Law became more known with Gattaca and Wilde and then once The Talented Mr Ripley hit in 1999 it just snowballed. Remember how many hit films and how much he was in the tabloids in the 2000’s? He was everywhere and the name just increased and increased until it made the Top 100 boys names that decade because of him.

So I’m afraid for much of the millennial generation, it’s a celeb led name which personally I’m not keen on. Of course, the current generation of UK kids won’t care about Jude Law (or likely any classic novel or German associations either) so if you love it OP then go for it imo - it’s such a popular name now that I can’t see it causing your son any issues.

NearlyThere91 · 03/04/2025 23:08

Anyway all I wanted to say is it’s a wonderful name and popular for a reason OP!

And that led to a lot of ‘Jew’ jokes/comments in Germany… it’s definitely a very unusual name there!

My German friend is called Georg. It’s pronounced “Gay-org”. Different names have different contexts in cultures and everyone knows that. Why were people making Jew jokes? That to me is quite vile, just as I’d find jokes about Georg’s name vile:

Jude Bellingham played for Dortmund for 4 years also... a German team...

Think it’s such a lovely name, likely will be our son’s name!

Love the point about religious significance for Catholics. My nanny used to pray to Saint Jude when she lost her glasses

Baby dance...you mean shag?

I do indeed. Pippa means that in Swedish.

I think it's obviously really important to be aware of written meanings of names in other languages but this forum seems to be very Jude focused and there are literally endless examples of names meaning something in another language. Verbally, it's very different in German.

Jude's a gorgeous, classic Saint's name in my opinion.

We are all absolutely entitled to opinions of course.

NearlyThere91 · 03/04/2025 21:44

I love it. So many names have another meanig in a different language. Pippa means to ... baby dance... in Swedish for example. Jude is pronounced yoo-deh in German.

ItsCalledAConversation · 03/04/2025 21:58

I love it. I know one male Jude primary school age. And a female Jude in her 40s. Suits them both amazingly well. Gorgeous name!

ThisUniqueDreamer · 03/04/2025 21:54

Love it.

Na... na na na na na na 😌

NearlyThere91 · 03/04/2025 21:53

Bluelavenders · 02/04/2025 23:01

But when it’s written down, it reads Jew to a German speaker. Perhaps this doesn’t matter if the op’s son has no plans to work in or do business in Germany, but it’s good to be aware imo

NearlyThere91 · 03/04/2025 21:50

It's also a Saint's name/ chapter in the Bible. I think people need to remember this. It's a very historic name with a lot of significance to the Catholic community, and to dismiss it as trendy is rather ignorant.

Emanwenym · 03/04/2025 09:09

@PrincessOfPreschool , it's always in use, and wasn't unusual enough to start a trend.

You could say the same of Jude. I only know one David younger than 75 and he's 5!

Emanwenym · 03/04/2025 09:30

I think it compares to Theo. Theo was unusual, then Theo Walcott hit the headlines. Lots of parents thought it was a bit different only to find they weren't the only ones.

Bowling4soup · 03/04/2025 09:29

I like it. Hey Jude

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 03/04/2025 09:18

Lots of boys called jude here, it is too try hard imho. Jude the obscure, no thanks
