Patrick or Elliot?

Just that really!

We’re slightly leaning towards Elliot but read in a few threads on here that it’s a bit of a ‘naughty’ name which I’d never thought of before. Are they potentially also both a bit outdated?! I can’t tell if I’m just getting in my head about this now!

We also already have a little girl called Nora

Yes I feel the same about Pat, but I like Paddy so I wonder if we could try to lead with that as his nickname. I don’t mind El or Els either

Paddy would be lovely as a nn.

mathanxiety · 01/04/2025 19:24

"Patch" is used as a nn for Patrick in Ireland.

Ime the name Paddy is used as a term for a dc having a tantrum!!
Neither 'go' with Nora..
What about Miles?

The term 'having a paddy' is an offensive anti Irish slur.

Nora and Patrick go extremely well together imo. Both names are associated with Ireland.

Elliot

Patrick, but with the NN Patch rather than Paddy!
They are both lovely names though.

Patch? That's a dog's name, or a rabbit.

DisforDarkChocolate · 01/04/2025 18:32

Patrick. Such a lovely strong name, plus I know an adorable one.

Namechange032025 · 01/04/2025 18:28

I love Patrick and it works fine as a full name ie not Pat or Paddy

Notdoingtoobadfor52 · 01/04/2025 18:26

Elliott. Patrick is awful.

hjokhjjjkkkd · 01/04/2025 18:25

Elliot is far nicer than Patrick, I’m surprised Patrick is so popular, I don’t think it sounds nice and it’s a bit middle aged. I know a range of ages for Elliot, I only know Patrick as an older man name.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 01/04/2025 18:21

Definitely Patrick.

LadyQuackBeth · 01/04/2025 18:19

Patrick

Sassysoonwins · 01/04/2025 16:41

I much prefer Elliot to Patrick.

leli · 01/04/2025 16:39

Patrick!

Moreteaandchocolate · 01/04/2025 16:39

Definitely Elliot!

HoldingTheDoor · 01/04/2025 16:09

Patrick is 100x nicer than Elliot.

SwedishEdith · 01/04/2025 16:08

Patrick. I like Pat on an adult man as well. It definitely goes with Nora. Honora is/was pretty common for Irish women so they definitely go together.

PeatandDieselfan · 01/04/2025 16:07

2 of my kids have names considered "naughty" or "common" by Mumsnet, but we liked the names and guess what, the kids are doing fine!

Tozzie · 01/04/2025 16:00

Thanks everyone! I thought that this would be more evenly split to be honest, but a clear majority for Patrick

Our surname is one syllable and ends in an S - a similar vibe to Mills if that makes a difference. We also have some (although not loads!) of Irish heritage from my husband’s side which it would be nice to nod to.

Patrick is classy and won't date. Elliot will date and isn't particularly classy.

shoopshoopdedoo · 01/04/2025 15:41

Patrick

Throwitback · 01/04/2025 15:34

Absolutely love Patrick! I’m not as fond of Elliott but it’s not a ‘naughty’ name in my experience

Chunkilumptious · 01/04/2025 15:33

Patrick. I prefer the spelling Eliot as in the poet. I find it a bit classier than Elliot. Maybe because of TS.
