Pronounced ROO-ah.

Baby boy will grow up in England if that affects your judgement at all.

Hi OP did you end up using the name? I had a boy in August '24 and called him Rua. We also live in England and he's half Irish. I love it and especially over here as no one has heard of it. I originally wanted to spell it Ruadh but my name is a difficult Irish name to pronounce and I didn't want him to have the same struggles. I now love how short and sweet it is.

mathanxiety · 30/03/2025 23:14

@Lassango
Crua means difficult/ severe/ hard in Irish.

Luca and Joshua ok.
Ezra I've only heard of as surname George Ezra.

Never heard of the rest

Ezra was an OT prophet.

I’ve lived in Ireland all my life and don’t know Ruadhs or Ruas of either sex. As the figures below show, it’s only started being used as a given name recently.

In 2024, 36 baby boys were called Ruadh in Ireland, up from 4 in 2014. The name was not included in stats before that as “due to confidentiality reasons, a name must be recorded 3 or more times in any year to be included”. It’s not listed at all for girls (though there still may be 1 or 2 a year of course).

In 2024, 13 baby boys were called Rua; the name was not included in stats before 2008, high point of 18 in 2021.

In 2024, 11 baby girls were called Rua, up from 4 in 2018, not included before that.

However Rua (‘Red’) was commonly used in the past as a nickname or identifier added to a given name because of a person’s hair colour.
For example, Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin (Owen Roe/Red Owen O’Sullivan) was an 18th century Irish poet. Dòmhnall Ruadh Chorùna (Red Donald of Coruna), was a Scottish Gaelic bard, stonemason, and veteran of the First World War.

I’m so sorry op but am in Ireland and I’ve heard of so many dogs called Rua.

Lassango · 30/03/2025 22:15

It's okay. Other options to consider:

Flai
Crua
Slou

None of these names look like they're finished!

ChorusOfDisapproval · 30/03/2025 22:49

Awful. Doesn't even sound like a name.

Upsetbetty · 30/03/2025 22:33

I’m in Ireland and I know 2 boys with the name Rua. One spells it Ruadh.

PreggersWithBaby2 · 30/03/2025 22:27

I'm in Ireland and have only heard it being used for a girl.

yikesanotherbooboo · 30/03/2025 22:26

Ruadh is fine , Rua feels a little insubstantial imo.

Can't say even!

sunflowersblooming · 30/03/2025 22:24

I wouldnt, So many people can say their Rs properly and would sound like woo-a. I don't like Rory or Warren for the same reason!

I can’t help that.

The other names mentioned by pp are Irish (as is Rua).

Dara Ó Briain is fairly well known in the UK though I’d have thought?

Edited

Yes and no, Googled him recognised his face but couldn't have told you his name.

Onlyvisiting · 30/03/2025 22:19

I've never come across either name, I wouldn't know how to pronounce Ruadh initially but it looks much nicer and more like an actual name to me.

Rua and Ruadh are pronounced the same.

Onlyvisiting · 30/03/2025 22:19

CSMF · 30/03/2025 21:12

Thanks for all the thoughts. Baby will be half Irish but the Ruadh spelling will be tricky in England. I like the simplicity of Rua too. Glad most seem neutral or favourable towards it.

I would think girl name - but Ruadhán is perfect.

Neversayit · 30/03/2025 22:12

@BrokenLine Male names ending in the letter a are common in other languages, but not that usual in English. How many English people are familiar with Setanta or Iarla?

It may not bother OP to give her DC a name that is unfamiliar to most where she lives…but I do think it is worth mentioning that many people in England may assume the name to be a girls’ one.
It’s up to OP after that.

I think it sounds feminine. I can't think of any male names ending in a only female

Amanda
Julia
Mia
Laura
And tons more but I can't think of a single male name ending in a

Luca, Ezra, Joshua, Dara, Fiachra, Enda, Iarla, Setanta, Donncha, Macdara.

If English people can, and they do, get their heads around Tadhg, Niamh, Siobhán, Saoirse, Cillian, Fionn etc, Ruadh isn’t going to blow any minds.
