Why are boys names so difficult???

WillisTi · 20/03/2025 21:37

We’ve got a little boy called Oscar, the only boys name we could agree upon at the time! We have another boy on the way now and can’t agree on a name at all!

The current list is:

  • Charlie Willis
  • Otis Willis
  • Jasper Willis
  • Otto Willis
  • Oliver Willis
  • Alfie Willis
  • Toby Willis

What does everyone think? Any names we might be missing?

Thanks

Like them all apart from Otis.

Jasper and Otto are my favourites.

I wouldn’t pick another name beginning with O.
Jasper is lovely but sound / ends the same as Oscar.
I’d go with Toby from your list.

Other ideas:

Jake
Isaac
Lachlan
Albie
Leon
Spike

becca3210 · 25/03/2025 05:36

Toby or Charlie sound nice. I’m not keen on Jasper but like Caspar as an alternative. I would avoid another O name.

cravingmilkshake · 25/03/2025 05:26

Every single one of your names above were names we considered - great taste! We eventually settled with Miles .

Jasper is my favourite about of all of the above .

PurBal · 25/03/2025 05:19

I know an Oscar with a brother Alfie. So that sounds right to me. Also like Otis and Jasper.

Tbrh · 25/03/2025 05:15

Toby is cute. What about Luke? Benjamin? Sam?

FondantFancyFan · 25/03/2025 05:13

Xavier Willis
Sebastian Willis (Seb)
Claude
Benjamin Willis (Ben)
Gabriel Willis (Gabe)

My favourites for Oscar's brother ..

Charles Willis
Toby Willis
Quentin Willis
Mark Willis

BoleynMemories13 · 22/03/2025 11:52

I'm with most that I would avoid another O name, especially Otis which really doesn't go with Willis. Oliver is the only one I like anyway. Otis and Otto are far too trendy and 'now' for me.

Charlie is probably my favourite from the rest of your list (Charlie has been used as a stand alone name for years so doesn't feel as nicknamey as some ie names). However, I did instantly think phonetic alphabet with Oscar and Charlie. I think you could still use it, but you will get a lot of comments.

Toby and Jasper aren't to my taste, but go well with Oscar and your surname. Alfie is ok.

shiningcuckoo · 22/03/2025 02:13

If I had a boy tomorrow I’d call him William. I love Otto out of your list. I’ve recently met a baby Heath which I really like and I once taught a boy called Shepherd. He is a young adult now and everyone calls him Shep. A cool name for a very cool kid.

NuffSaidSam · 22/03/2025 01:04

I'd avoid another O initial so that takes out Otis, Oliver and Otto.

I'm not keen on Alfie and Charlie, they're both so popular and very meh.

I like Tobias, less keen on Toby.

Jasper is the winner for me.

Or:

Jude
Hugo
Freddie
Jacob
Elliot
Dylan

LilyJosephine · 22/03/2025 01:00

Of your picks I’d definitely go for Alfred (nn Alfie) - as it has a very similar “retro popular stately/patrician” vibe to Oscar (Alfie as a given name is a bit too trendy). 2nd choice Tobias or Jasper.

Not sure about Charlie as it’s a bit phonetic alphabet with Oscar and personally as much as I like Oliver, I’m not that keen on same initials for same sex siblings if there are other options.

mathanxiety · 22/03/2025 00:25

I think Jasper amd Oliver are great. Toby too. All three flow well with Willis.

LilacPony · 21/03/2025 23:47

Sorry, Oscar and Charlie made me think of the phonetic alphabet so I wouldn’t use those two together personally.
But, yes my goodness boy names are so much harder!! Jasper, Alfie or Toby from your list. Good luck!

shoopshoopdedoo · 21/03/2025 23:33

Charlie is my favourite. Love Oliver too, but perhaps a bit too similar to Oscar.

Jasper is well-loved by Mumsnet, but is one of my least favourite names, so I’d personally avoid that one from your list! Also not super keen on Otis or Otto.

Firebird83 · 21/03/2025 22:36

Most people won’t know who he is, but Toby Willis is the name of someone who was on a US reality TV show who is in jail for abusing his kids. I personally would avoid that name.

They used to be, not anymore.

timoteigirl · 21/03/2025 21:45

Toby seems to go best with Oscar but does it need to go? The others seem different style especially Jasper. What about Wesley? Although with Willis as middle name doesn't really go.

Axel
August
Elliott
Ernest
Isaac
Jonah
Jake
Leon
Linus
Samuel
Sidney
Zachary

Stayathomemum102 · 21/03/2025 21:35

I agree I think it’s so hard to pick boy names. It took me ages! I finally settled on Xander, although it took us until he was 2 weeks old to choose!

The problem with naming forums, although yes they can be helpful when you’re stuck - they can also be extremely negative. I honestly think having strangers weigh in on my babies name made the naming process so much harder. I felt like I needed 100% approval before giving her a name.

With that being said, If you’re already having a hard time choosing, I’d try not to listen to too many people’s opinions because it can truly get overwhelming.

Trust yourself and remember that only yours and your DPs opinions matter. You’ll never get 100% approval on a name - and that is the beauty of names!

ScentOfAMoomin · 21/03/2025 21:19

I don’t love Otis or Otto, not least of all as they share the same initial.

The rest are all fine: I would maybe add:

Xander
Lucas
Finlay
Harris

WillisTi · 21/03/2025 20:44

Looks like Toby is popular! We would use the full name Tobias.

Toby is great but I'd want to use Tobias. Jasper is a cool name too.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 21/03/2025 14:22

i don't like Otis, and i'd avoid using another O name
Alfie isn't my cup of tea.

Xander?

Offtobuttonmoontovisitmrspoon · 21/03/2025 11:55

Jasper is lovely.

I would avoid another O name.

How about Luca?

I really like traditional names like James and Benjamin.

Amyjade2022 · 21/03/2025 11:49

Toby gets my vote!
