Hello…we are expecting a baby boy and we are very torn between Lucas or Archie? We really like them both but just can’t decide!

Lucas has more gravitas for a boy later in life, Archie sounds childish. I also like the name Xavier, it's another name that will carry a child through all stages of his life.

If you’re not keen on Luke as a short form of Lucas then I’d avoid it. The Lucas I know gets called Luc (Luke) by his mates

Timeforanotheraliasnow · 17/03/2025 00:50

Lucas

MyNameIsAlexDrake · 17/03/2025 00:14

I’m not so keen on Lucas but love Luke and Luka. My grandad was a Luka so it scans much better for me than Luca.

Thanks. We don’t really mind shortened names on the bc so ok with Archie in that respect. My concern with it is whether it’s more of a name for a little boy rather than an adult. With Lucas my DH is worried it would get shortened to Luke which he doesn’t like (but I don’t think that it would).

I know two people called Lucas. When their names are shortened it is to Lou or Louie.

Archie is a shortened version of Archibald or Archer, but plenty of people name their children the shortened versions of a name. Archie, Jessie(Jesse), Harry, Sally. So I wouldn’t let that reason stop you.

Both names are good.

Lucas is lovely.

wizzler · 16/03/2025 23:16

Love Archie

Holymoly64 · 16/03/2025 23:11

We have a Lucas in our family. I thought it would be shortened to Luc (love that spelling) but it’s actually been shortened to Cas.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/03/2025 22:56

I teach an Archie (undergraduate level) and while he’s a lovely lad it seems like a “little boy” name, and feels odd on a 6ft 20-year-old.

I also met an Archie dog the other day and he was adorable!!

Lucas

Archie is a shortening of Archibald.

For the past 15 years (give or take), Archie has very much been a name in its own right

Maxorias · 16/03/2025 22:48

I love Lucas. No contest here. Archie is faddy, it's a diminutive, and Lucas is just so much better (even the meaning is nice).

I love Lukas even more but I appreciate that'd condemn him to a lifetime of "Lukas with a K".

LilyJosephine · 16/03/2025 22:45

Lucas - it’s a lovely strong name imo (just the Latinate version of Luke - which one is more popular simply varies with fashion).

I personally don’t usually find diminutives that strong sounding - they always feel like cute pet names to me so I’m less keen on Archie (If diminutives are your style then I personally prefer the single syllable ones - something like Zack, Max, Cal etc ).

emeraldsarebest · 16/03/2025 22:31

I have a 17 year old Lucas. His name has never been shortened. He has never had any comments related to mucus and very much likes his name.

Personally I don’t like Archie as a name. Nothing wrong with it just not my taste. They strike me as two very different choices. I also don’t care for Luca unless Italian heritage in the family. It is crazy the difference one letter makes!

Nevertrustacop · 16/03/2025 22:24

Lucas. Though I do prefer Luke

I have a Lucas, and his name has never been shortened. Everyone calls him Lucas.

Lucas is already popular. There’s several at my DC’s school. To me they’re both just generic popular boys names? Although I prefer Luca.

Thanks. Do they go by Lucas or Luke?

Archie will be one of 3 in his class.

Hmm. Weird. I haven't named my own child with this sort of name but I don't see the issue.

You don't. I do. People are different, shocker.

WhiteOrca · 16/03/2025 20:06

SharpLily · 16/03/2025 19:34

I do. Plenty of other people I know also bat their eyelids at this.

shoopshoopdedoo · 16/03/2025 20:02

Archie. I really don’t like Lucas or Luca, I think it’s the mucus connection. Luke would be my top choice personally!

Ceh512 · 16/03/2025 19:58

Thanks for the help. I think we are leaning towards Lucas although the mucus comment is a bit worrying 😅. Has anyone with a Lucas had this? Although probably all names you could rhyme with something so probably not a great reason to go against a name

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/03/2025 19:43

Lucas

I don't really like diminutive names on adults - they should at least have the choice of bring Archibald, James, Charles etc

SharpLily · 16/03/2025 19:34

WhiteOrca · 16/03/2025 18:55

But there are loads of names like this that people register just the shortened version - Max, Reggie, Leo, Theo, Freddie, etc. No one bats an eye..?

I do. Plenty of other people I know also bat their eyelids at this.

SharpLily · 16/03/2025 19:33

Emanwenym · 16/03/2025 17:56

@SharpLily , thousands of babies have been registered as Archie so it's a name.

Probably even more babies have been registered as Nevaeh. I still don't consider it a name.

Did you know it's 'heaven' backwards? 🙄
