Hi everyone!

I've been struggling to come up with a name for my baby boy, i have been set on Oliver for a while but it didn’t feel right. Last night me and my partner thought of the name Dexter, (Dex for a nickname)

Do you like the name Dexter?

Love it, would have been DDs name if she was a boy, and still on my list for DC3

RuthW · 12/03/2025 19:55

Lovely

PreggersWithBaby2 · 12/03/2025 19:55

Not a fan, sorry. Reminds me of a nerdy scientist with a crazy sister.

I like it. My son had a best friend called Dexter and he was a lovely child, smart, polite and kind. It just makes me think of nice children...oh and Dexter's Laboratory

GrimTimes1 · 12/03/2025 19:52

Love Dexter! It was on our list too!

I know too dogs named Dexter, not for me.

Love Oliver

Ha me too. I never watched the tv show but it’s embedded as a dog name for me.

I don’t dislike it though.

TheOverstuffedWalrus · 12/03/2025 19:40

@Devilsmommy 😂❤️

Op, I love Dexter. I know the TV series (although I thought of One Day before serial killer Dexter), but it's not all pervasive throughout popular culture, it's not like calling a kid Madonna or something.

Dexter was on my maybe list. So was Jasper?

Llamasarellovely · 12/03/2025 19:36

Saw the name, thought dog. So did everyone else by the looks of it!
I did know a lovely retriever called Dexter, for what it's worth.

honeyfox · 12/03/2025 19:33

I do like it but unfortunately the only one I've ever known is actually a dog.

FondantFancyFan · 12/03/2025 19:32

It's a dog's name, how about Xavier?

swilrls · 12/03/2025 19:21

Sorry no I don't like it at all

Moreteaandchocolate · 12/03/2025 19:17

I love the name Dexter - it hits the sweet spot of familiar but not too popular and it’s not dated or too trendy. Good choice 👍
Oliver is lovely but he will be Oliver / Olly plus surname - there are just so many of them!

Lovethesparklylights · 12/03/2025 19:15

Much better than Oliver

Fiorenzsay · 12/03/2025 19:15

It makes me think of a dog.

Or someone from Only Fools (that was Denzel but it still does!)

Oliver is nice!

llovemermaidgin · 12/03/2025 19:13

I know someone who has a Jackson, she named him around the last time Michael Jackson was in the news. Can't stand the name as a result and he gets called 'wacko' as a result, Just so horrible.

Don't worry about the whole serial killer thing. It's a great name I think. I've got Damien so you can imagine the jokes I get😂

😂 I can relate to you (and also with an e spelling).

Ghostofallnightmares · 12/03/2025 19:07

Sorry, but it's a labradors name to me .
Also serial killer..

Thiswayorthatway · 12/03/2025 19:04

Yes, it was on our shortlist 14 years ago and I have never met one

Its fine but it is currently a popular/commonly used name, so if you were thinking it was very individual you may be disappointed (although it’s all personal preference as to wether that bothers you at all)
It’s obviously not top 10 etc (I think it’s just outside the top 100) but I do know of a few baby/Toddler Dexters at the moment!

Oh wow! I didn’t know it was popular. That doesn’t bother me at all! I wasn’t choosing it to be creative as such I just like the name, and I’m struggling with boys names! 😂

I like it. Prefer it to Oliver.

bugalugs45 · 12/03/2025 18:56

I know 2 dogs called Dexter so would also think of a dogs name I'm afraid , Max whilst being a popular child's name reminds me of dogs

Love it, great strong name. Oliver is nice but waaay too common. Both are dogs names so I wouldn’t worry about that!
