Classical and masculine name like Tristan

Hi there,

I'm due soon for DS2 and need a help to choose the name!
DS1 is Tristan and we want another classical and masculine name goes well with it.
Few of DH favourite names are Scandinavian. We don't have Scandinavian backgrounds though we live in Scotland, is that ok?
One more concern is if some of them are too masculine name for potential bullies as I'm quite short & skinny so the DS2 likely to be too.

This is the short list.
Edward
Leon
Marius
Thorfinn
Magnus
Lysander

How do you feel about these names? Any other suggestions?

Yeah no none of those names are particularly masculine sounding sorry.

Jay185 · 12/03/2025 03:59

Have always loved the name Tristan, from Brad Pitt's character in Legends of the Fall.

I would say Edward and Leon from your list.

Edmund

Edward has so many fab shortenings.

Tris and Ed.
Tris and Ned.

I think Jasper is a similar name to Tristan. Or Seb (Sebastian).

I really love Tristan, OP. Of course, it may be that due to being one of the most famous lovers from legend that the name may have a softer association for some people. But as anyone educated will know, Tristan is of course classic. Romantic, masculine and of great literary and operatic significance. A great choice.

I love Magnus (I am biased), and what a fantastic duo those names would be! Real gravitas!

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/03/2025 21:34

I love Edward and Leon from your list - Leon is one of my favourite names and goes perfectly with Tristan.

How about

Nathan
Dexter
Luke
Sebastian
Ivan
Aidan
Adrian
Alistair

Conor
Callum
Dominic
Solomon

I like Thorfinn and Lysander, but think they might both make for playground teasing. They are still a little unusual.

A little unusual?? They are down right weird and verging on child abuse lmao

mathanxiety · 11/03/2025 19:19

Marius, Thorfinn, and Magnus sound silly with Tristan, imo.

I wouldn't classify Tristan as "masculine".

Quentin
Julian
Barnaby
Fraser
Elliott
Fergus
Hugo
Alistair
Raphael
Arthur
Nathaniel
Ambrose
Sebastian
Evan
Henry
Oliver

How about

Hi OP, I LOVE the name Tristan, it's a classical name with a lovely meaning. However, in the UK (which I think you live, but are not from??) it wouldn't be seen as a masculine name. That does not mean that it's not a nice name though! 💖

Have you considered Thorsten/Torsten as a sibling name? I think they sound good together and give off a similar vibe.

Tristan is one of my favourite names. I also like Magnus. Thorfinn is from Orkney isn't it, I feel you would need some connection to use it.
Lysander is good. I also like:
Patrick
Sebastian
Felix
Caspian
Angus
Hamish
Jonathan
Edmund

I do agree with PP the general vibe is more Shakespearian/classical rather than overtly masculine.

Ashley12345 · 11/03/2025 17:59

Thank you for honest opinions about names including Tristan! I didn't realise how different impression I had from everyone else... probably because I'm not from an English speaking country. DH was right he said Tristan has a delicate sound in it. Anyway I still love the name Tristan.

I really appreciate to know which names everyone likes and how they actually sound like.

I wouldn’t see any of those names (inc Tristan) as masculine. Rather more as posh and even effeminate.

MadderthanMorris · 11/03/2025 17:51

Thor

MummytoE · 11/03/2025 17:43

Tristan is classic and masculine?? Lol who knew

TheRealMaudOHara · 11/03/2025 17:38

What about Greek or Latin names - Hector, Perseus (Percy), Alexander, Jason, Jupiter, Claudius, Leo, Maximus, Victor?
