Classical and masculine name like Tristan

Ashley12345 · 11/03/2025 17:13

Hi there,

I'm due soon for DS2 and need a help to choose the name!
DS1 is Tristan and we want another classical and masculine name goes well with it.
Few of DH favourite names are Scandinavian. We don't have Scandinavian backgrounds though we live in Scotland, is that ok?
One more concern is if some of them are too masculine name for potential bullies as I'm quite short & skinny so the DS2 likely to be too.

This is the short list.
Edward
Leon
Marius
Thorfinn
Magnus
Lysander

How do you feel about these names? Any other suggestions?

Tristan and Felix is nice OR cheesy because sad/happy.

greatfrontage · 13/03/2025 10:43

Hector
Hugo
Felix
Edward

Mingenious · 13/03/2025 10:41

Oh yes, Cormack is a fabulous suggestion!

GreenCandleWax · 13/03/2025 10:39

Angus. Or Adam.

trendingup · 13/03/2025 10:33

Some people are very rude, read the OP properly and note that she's not asking for opinions on Tristan, her first son is already called Tristan, so fair enough saying it's not a particularly masculine name but we really don't need to go as far as saying it's a name for weak and feeble men.

OP I think Tristan is a lovely name, my favourites to match with it are Jasper, Sebastian and Hugo.

MiddleAgedDread · 13/03/2025 10:31

Tristan & Hugo
Tristan & Murdo
Tristan & Angus

Notsupposedtohappen · 13/03/2025 08:55

Tristan isn’t particular masculine.

Out of your shortlist, I’d go for Edward, though I do like Magnus. None of the others. Leon is a bit odd in your list. It has a very different vibe to the rest. Leo would fit better.

Have you considered Alexander, the epitome of classical and masculine, to me?

BettyBardMacDonald · 13/03/2025 01:15

Sebastian

Siegfried

Darius

JessyCarr · 13/03/2025 00:18

I see “classical and masculine” and my mind goes straight to Alexander, which I think is much more wearable than Lysander. Mind you, I did meet a tiny baby Tiberius recently so I guess it’s all a question of perspective.

Edward is nice (and Edmund more interesting to me) but you can’t use Ned in Scotland where it has a nasty slang meaning.

Magnus is pretty cool! Thorfinn too Viking. Leon is OK but Marius I don’t care for.

Others have made great suggestions. I think Caspar, Rupert, Quentin, Sebastian, Laurence, Alastair or Rory could all go well with Tristan, though not all are my cup of tea. (I’d pick Laurence!).

wizzler · 12/03/2025 23:51

Tristan and....
Ivo
Alistair
Dominic
Benjamin

CarpetKnees · 12/03/2025 23:48

Another who really wouldn't connect the name Tristan and the word masculinity.

However, that isn't what you are asking - just make it a bit more difficult to go for the vibe you are trying for.

From your list, I personally only like Edward. Though, once again, I wouldn't put that in a 'masculine' category.

SnoopysHoose · 12/03/2025 23:29

*Tristan

Marius
Thorfinn
Magnus
Lysander*
I'll assume you live in a nice MC area, the average Scottish school will have a field day with these names

JuliaLivilla · 12/03/2025 23:16

I love Lysander, but I have always had a fondness for classical Greek names, both men and women's. I once taught a Themistocles. I had always admired the Athenian politician/general.

windysocks · 12/03/2025 23:10

Some of these name suggestions are so 'try too hard,' in a 'motherland' way. Edward is strong and timeless, also Fraser or Seamus lovely choices

FondantFancyFan · 12/03/2025 22:53

Xavier
Charles
Rennie
Sebastian
Claude
Marius
Marcus
Franklin
Benjamin
Julian

icelolly12 · 12/03/2025 22:44

Sorry quite amused at the thought of Tristan being masculine. Thorfinn is a bit ridiculous in my opinion. Out of your preferences the only one I like is Edward.

BillyILash · 12/03/2025 22:15

Sorry my first thought was Tristan is not remotely masculine, very preppy public school boy name sorry. That’s not saying it’s not nice.

Edward is the only name on your list I remotely like, classic, can be used by all sorts of backgrounds. My grandad was an Edward, a builder and boxer so fairly masculine. I have several other Edward relatives, varying personalities, they vary in nicknames, Ed, Eddie, Ned, Ted

I personally like classic names, with the Scottish element

Robert
Bruce
Andrew
William
Angus
Eric
Duncan not my favourite but I think it goes well with Tristan

Sacndi, I can only think of Axl.

mummysmagicmedicine · 12/03/2025 21:58

Edward- I like but doesn’t top Tristan
Leon- I prefer Leo
Marius- not for me
Thorfinn- but if a mouthful🙈
Magnus- I LOVE
Lysander- not for me but is still nice

suggestions:
Hector
Darius
Dexter
Jaxon
Sebastian
Hendrix
Huxley
Cormac
Lennox
Jasper
Oscar
Hartley
Rafferty
Maddox
Casper
Spencer
Fergus
Cohen
Atticus
Rupert

appriciate some are a bit out there but what do you think? Xx

Mingenious · 12/03/2025 21:25

Hugo would go very well with Tristan which I think is a lovely name, btw.

Names that I think match with Tristan:
a
George
Jim (James)
Caspar
Elliot
Edd (mund or ward)
Matthew
Sebastian
Amos
Henry

I really don’t like Marius for some reason.

merryhouse · 12/03/2025 21:13

Ha, S2 was at primary school with a kid called Tristan.

Whenever he was mentioned among our family and wider friends I would add "...nothing like what you're imagining".

He appeared to be a decent enough child, and was actually relatively good at maths, but was definitely one of the Tough Kids, had an uncle who was in prison, and played in the local football team that another parent described to me in less than glowing terms...

So it appears that the name has transcended its origins Grin

I would put Lysander and Sebastian in the same Definitely Not Tough box. Edward more normal but probably friends with Sebastian (they call each other Ned and Seb).

Marius doesn't have such connotations but certainly where I grew up is homophonic with marry us so I'd suggest not.

Thorfinn is sufficiently unusual to mean nothing more than Bit Foreign on first encounter. Possibly in the same class as Otto and Luca, two boys I know who are also Definitely Not Tough.

I quite like Magnus. I don't think it has to mean tall, the greatness can be metaphorical. Mind you I'm old enough that it means dramatic music and lighting.

I'd go for Magnus or Thorfinn.

ilovepixie · 12/03/2025 20:51

Tristan is so not a macho name. Like Sebastian. Both names imply a simpering, feeble weak type of man.

Emanwenym · 12/03/2025 20:50

@CurlewKate , the OP is in Scotland.

Emanwenym · 12/03/2025 20:47

Siegfried?

wildthingsinthenight · 12/03/2025 15:30

Sebastian goes well with Tristan

Emanwenym · 12/03/2025 15:28

Tristan is a bit 1970s to me but it's classic.

Edward - safe. Will be Ed
Leon - a bit 1980s. Not keen. Makes me think Trotsky
Marius - ok
Thorfinn - too scandi?
Magnus - like
Lysander- too frilly

I don't think a Magnus would need to be tall. Similar names - Angus, Fergus, Max.

Names I think you might like - Elliott, Fraser, Robert, Charles
