Do you like your name?

I absolutely can’t stand mine! I think it’s because my parents used to screech it so much on a regular basis and teachers would both mispronounce it and mock it.

Does anyone like their name? I don’t think many people dislike theirs as much as I dislike mine but it’s probably because I have had no end of hassle with it in my life!

I love my name for being easy to live with - easy to spell / pronounce, familiar and fairly standard name but not too overused. Nice and simple two syllable name that isn’t generally shortened. This was my set of criteria for all of my children’s names.

whatnooow · 02/03/2025 14:29

No. Mines a shortened version of a nice name, but it's really chavy

Wren77 · 02/03/2025 14:08

My name is an older ladies name, which has never had a comeback, unlike a number of similar names! My name is openly loathed by most (on here definitely!!) on those threads about worst names that will never make a comeback 😂 and to make it worse, my middle name turns me into a popular 60s song! However, I managed to play a blinder when I married and took my husbands last name, and now I sound like a 1930s movie star, and people nearly always comment on my lovely name! So now I do in fact love it! ❤️

Thornybush · 02/03/2025 13:56

Love mine. It's quite unusual and I always tell my dm I'm glad she picked it over the two other names she liked - Grace & Louise (they are quite common in comparison)

chattyness · 02/03/2025 13:47

No, I've got 3 names on my birth certificate, my first name was quickly abandoned as my older siblings couldn't pronounce it ( it's not difficult or unusual) so my second name was used by family, but then when I went to school I had to use my first name & it caused a lot of confusion with my many cousins in school using my second name, constant questions about it 🙄 When my friends would come round to the house, my mother used to call me by my first name in a pretentious mocking manner stretching her neck and sneering when she said it, (I can still hear her mocking tone, yet she chose it! ) so I began to really hate it and never use it now except on official paperwork.

changedusernameforthis1 · 02/03/2025 13:41

No, I changed mine.

I think it was hearing it being said repeatedly in a certain tone in my childhood that made me dislike it so much. It was when I knew I was in serious trouble.

Weirdly, now that it's been years since I've used it, I actually think it's not that bad and suits other people perfectly.

TheFlyingHorse · 02/03/2025 13:36

Yes, it's classic and pretty without being fussy. It not that common but familiar enough that almost everyone knows how to spell and pronounce it. It's used in other European countries either with the same or a slight variation in spelling so it not unusual for non native English speakers.

Threewordseightletters · 02/03/2025 13:32

Loathe mine. I like to think I could pass as a bit younger than my age but my name absolutely screams that I must be in my 50s! I sure no baby has been called my name since 1975

No. It's usually short for a longer name, and I have an unusual (but not unheard of) spelling of it. Everyone assumes my name is actually the long version and that I'm just being precious about the spelling of a nickname. I've spent far too much time correcting people that it's not the long version and spelling my name out. I've had people "correcting" my name to the long version and causing me bother to rectify it - including nearly losing my student loan because some helpful person in the university admin department deciding to update my name to the long version so it didn't match my loan application. I just wanted a name you could find on those personalised gift stands!

I have great sympathy for the kids I see with deliberately "unique" spellings!

I was confirming details over the phone after an email & the woman said I need your proper name, this will be a legal document.
I replied that IS my full proper name.
I just got an "oh". I suppose at least she didn't change it like your "helpful" admin person.

blackpear · 02/03/2025 13:31

No. I always wanted to be Kate. Mine is a v dated 70s/80s name. There were five of us in my class at school.

Growlybear83 · 02/03/2025 13:28

I like my name, it's a nice normal one, but really dislike having a middle name. My brother wasn't given a middle name and it seems so pointless having one. I was careful to give my daughter a fairly timeless name, rather than an embarrassing trendy or made up name and she is so grateful that I did so.

Kaminari · 02/03/2025 13:28

I love my name. I hated it when I was a kid because it was an 'old lady name' and I wanted a cool, modern name like my mates. I really like it now, though. It's Eleanor.

BowlCupMug · 02/03/2025 13:27

I’m Laura, it’s a classic 80s name.

There were only two of us at school but now I’m an adult I know so many Lauras. I work with loads of Lauras and several of my ‘mum’ friends are also Lauras!

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 02/03/2025 13:25

I didn’t used to but it’s grown on me. I can’t imagine being called anything else now. It’s a biblical name which I like because it means it has history behind it and isn’t one of those names that is popular for a short time and quickly becomes dated. I gave my son a biblical name as well for the same reasons.

BunnyLake · 02/03/2025 13:19

I hate mine. It’s weird really as I have hated it since I was about two and I’m not sure that many two year olds care what their name is, but my hatred for it has always been really deep. I can’t even imagine how it must feel to like the name you were given. I’ve always felt envious of people who like their name. I use a diminutive but I can't get away from it at the doctor’s or hospitals and I negatively react inside every time it’s called even all these year’s later.

May I ask why you didn’t change it - when you changed school or went to uni for example?

dizzydizzydizzy · 02/03/2025 13:15

Not really. It's a name of DM's generation and often comes up ion here on threads about names that are never going to come back in fashion.

Lionred · 02/03/2025 13:09

Yes, my husband and I would both have liked to use it for a daughter if it wasn’t my name.

It’s a name that some people think is ‘of its time’ (80s/90s) and some think is incredibly classic/timeless. Who knows which is the truth!

I love the name Kate too, not mine though unfortunately, I hate my name.

I love Kate. I've met a quite a few in my life and never any I didn't like.

Mirabai · 02/03/2025 13:06

I love mine. The only annoyance is that the diminutive is unisex so I get a lot of letters Dear Mr Mirabai which is surprisingly annoying. I use the long version more now.

pearbottomjeans · 02/03/2025 13:03

Indifferent. When I see someone write it down, referring to me, it does make me pause. Like, ‘I’m a ‘Lucy’?!?’ (Not real name). That feeling of when you say a word over and over and it loses meaning. I don’t get that if someone says my name out loud though. But seeing it written down is stark.

I prefer the shortening of my name but no one other than DH uses it and feels weird getting people to start now at my big age!

Helen was my planned name for DS1 if he were a girl. He's 14 now. The nickname would have been Nell.

My name is Rachel. I am on the positive side of indifferent. But there are no other names I would prefer really.

if DS2 were a girl he would have been Elizabeth with a nn Beth. As it is they both have top 10 names for their years of birth. I hope they like their names.

CurlewKate · 02/03/2025 12:48

I don't like my full name, but love the shortening that I have used all my life-insisting on it from the moment I was able to express a preference. It's still one of my favorite names. The only thing I wish now is that I had kept the slightly unusual spelling I used to use, but my life was certainly much easier one I bowed to the inevitable!. It's Kate, by the way.

I love the name Kate too, not mine though unfortunately, I hate my name.
