Do you like your name?

I absolutely can’t stand mine! I think it’s because my parents used to screech it so much on a regular basis and teachers would both mispronounce it and mock it.

Does anyone like their name? I don’t think many people dislike theirs as much as I dislike mine but it’s probably because I have had no end of hassle with it in my life!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Ive grown to genuinely love it. Hated it as a kid, classic but with lots of teasing potential.

NormasArse · 03/03/2025 20:26

I really like my full name, and also the shortened versions. The only criticism ever aimed at it is that it’s a bit ‘horsey’. I can live with that 😁.

RubyBirdy · 03/03/2025 20:22

I LOVE my full name but hate the shortening that was chosen for me. I have asked friends and family to use the un-shortened version and they have all said no!

MakeOrBake · 03/03/2025 01:07

Love my first name but don't like my first name last name combo. Too many syllables and awkward to link together. Plus my surname is quite unusual - Google tells me there is only me with my name combo. Though I know of others with variations of my first name last name.

I don't mind spelling my name(s) all the time, but hate how awkward I feel introducing myself.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/03/2025 00:54

Love it - it’s classic, timeless, incredibly international and used in the Bible as well as by a lot of classic authors and Shakespeare and in film and songs (so everyone knows how to spell and pronounce it). Yet it’s rarely made the Top 100 in the UK, so I’ve usually been the only one in school and at work.

But the problem with being lucky enough to have been given a really great name by my parents means it’s even harder to name my own children - I struggled to find a name that ticked as many boxes as my own.

I really hate my name, it's from the 1940's but I was born in the seventies. It has never been popular and is such a harsh name.
It is occasionally mentioned on here.
I would have loved to have had a popular name.

Uppitymuppity · 02/03/2025 23:51

Not particularly, seems to be liked by other people when it comes up on here now and again, touted as timeless and a classic, but I think it's a bit bland. I am glad that I wasn't given one of the very popular names that were commonly used around the time I was born however as I really dislike some of those names, so swings and roundabouts I suppose.

DramaAlpaca · 02/03/2025 23:47

I love it. I've always gone by my middle name and I like it a lot, it's a classic and was the middle name of both my grandmother and her MIL, my great grandmother too. It's unusual these days, especially in the country I now live in.

My first name, however, I absolutely hate. I was only given it because my cousin was born just before me and got the name my parents intended to give me. They never used it either, always used my middle name.

BasicBeach · 02/03/2025 23:07

No, it's a virtue name and it doesn't fit me....

RobertaFirmino · 02/03/2025 23:04

I have a Gaelic name and not one of the nice ones either. Mum was Irish. It's a pain in the arse. I just use a very short version as I'm sick of explaining it.

AbigaiIsParty · 02/03/2025 22:50

I really like my name (see username). I think my mother did a good job choosing it. It's served me really well. I go by Abi, day to day, sounds like happy! 😀I think most people like it, too. I was named in the mid-seventies. It was not popular then. Spiked in the mid-nineties, so I have now heard of a few who are 20 years younger than me - I like that it's reasonably timeless. My children are school-age and there's only one that we know of in their school, so it's obviously dipping again, which I am glad of.

Well if it's Ruth, I think it's a lovely classic name.

Could be Sarah, it’s a classic name that seems to fit any generation and any time in history. You’d be hard pushed to guess how old a Sarah is.

Oh ha I see the username has Ruth in it 😁

hideawayforever · 02/03/2025 19:45

RuthW · 02/03/2025 16:44

No I don't because it can't be shortened. That's why dd has a long name.

On a good note, you can't really get my age from my name as I know 90 year olds and teens with it.

Well if it's Ruth, I think it's a lovely classic name.

LittleGreenDuck · 02/03/2025 17:40

Hate it. The long version is pretentious and the short version is more usually used for boys, so I was constantly missexed as a child (the pudding bowl haircut didn't help.) The name seems to be in favour on MN, but I shudder when I see it. There is another shortened version which I quite like, but seems a bit late to change now.

I certainly stood out amongst all the Sarahs, Emmas and Clares of my generation.

FlutteryButterfly · 02/03/2025 17:14

Yes and No. Don't like my full name but love it's shortening. Never go by my full name but it's obviously on official documents etc.

LegoHouse274 · 02/03/2025 16:51

I love my name. I have had the mispronouncing and mocking forever too, it's a 'forrin' name. That never affected how I felt about my lovely name that is a reflection of my heritage.

JazbayGrapes · 02/03/2025 16:47

I like mine - very international and timeless. But with a foreign spelling it always gets misread and i want to scream. If you don't know how to read a foreign spelling of a name maybe don't shout it out loud?

coolcahuna · 02/03/2025 16:46

Ladamesansmerci · 02/03/2025 11:49

Mine is Louise (middle name Elizabeth). I like it! I don't meet many other Louise's as it was mostly a middle name in my era.

I think it's timeless and pretty.

I love the name Louise ! I only know one and think it's such a lovely name and hardly anyone has it.

coolcahuna · 02/03/2025 16:45

Yes I love my name. Didn't like it as a child as it's very classic, not very trendy. But its a totally timeless elegant name and I wouldn't choose anything else.

RuthW · 02/03/2025 16:44

No I don't because it can't be shortened. That's why dd has a long name.

On a good note, you can't really get my age from my name as I know 90 year olds and teens with it.

I was confirming details over the phone after an email & the woman said I need your proper name, this will be a legal document.
I replied that IS my full proper name.
I just got an "oh". I suppose at least she didn't change it like your "helpful" admin person.

One of my aunts named her children 'Tom' Bob' and 'Kate'. Those are their official names, not shortenings and they have had no end of trouble with it.

One of my colleagues has an incredibly exotic combination of names- it's so unique that i can't say it on here as she is instantly google-able. She said she loathed her abusive parents and when she went NC she decided to change both her names. I think I would do the same tbh. I love the idea of reinventing yourself. I never thought I would change my surname upon marriage but DH's surname is really lovely so I use both his surname and my original surname fairly interchangeably based on what i feel like at the time. I have good fun with it (and bank accounts in both names so no issues there).

blackpear · 02/03/2025 13:31

No. I always wanted to be Kate. Mine is a v dated 70s/80s name. There were five of us in my class at school.

I love the name Kate. It’s strong but still feminine.

Wren77 · 02/03/2025 14:08

My name is an older ladies name, which has never had a comeback, unlike a number of similar names! My name is openly loathed by most (on here definitely!!) on those threads about worst names that will never make a comeback 😂 and to make it worse, my middle name turns me into a popular 60s song! However, I managed to play a blinder when I married and took my husbands last name, and now I sound like a 1930s movie star, and people nearly always comment on my lovely name! So now I do in fact love it! ❤️

I so want to know what it is 😁

May I ask why you didn’t change it - when you changed school or went to uni for example?

My mum took it very personally that I didn’t like my name. I first broached the subject about seriously changing it when i was around twelve but had voiced my dislike of it for many years prior. There was much wailing and hurt feelings 😖 I did change it to a shortened version but it’s really never felt like me (but better than the full version). I do regret not standing my ground just before I started senior school but I didn’t have an alternative name chosen and zero support from my mum about changing it. It might sound silly but I used to think I might have been more confident with a name I loved. By the time everyone got used to my shortened version I didn’t feel I could change it again.

Manchesterbythesea · 02/03/2025 14:44

Not particularly but I don’t give it much thought. It’s a very English 70’s name. Think Sharon, Michelle etc. I’m Irish so there wasn’t a lot of my name in school.
