Girls name to match Eve

Evmamai · 12/02/2025 14:56

Hi all, we have a toddler named Eve and are expecting a second baby girl in March. We found picking Eve’s name super easy and even now she suits it’s so well. Her full name is Eve Alexandra.
Our shortlist right now is

  • Zara
  • May
  • Isla
  • Grace

However none feel quite right, I love May but DH worries that two single syllable 3 letter names is a bitch match. I also love Isla but it is very popular. DH loves Grace but I went to school with. Girl who was cruelly nicknamed “Greasy Grace” and now I hear grease when ever I hear Grace. Zara is another of my preferences but DH says it makes him think of the shop!

So any ideas or suggestions? Our surname is McManus.

My very horrible next door neighbours have two daughters, Eve is the elder and Grace the younger.

I don't like Zara (agree with your husband), and the other two names are rather blah.

I'd suggest Stella, or perhaps a virtue name such as Mercy or Charity. All would work well with McManus.

Yes I like that

Eve and May are both stunning, simple, elegant and classic names, I really love both. I personally like May with your surname- but then my DS has a very alliterative name too as I think they often sound lyrical and more memorable.

Out of your other choices I definitely like Zara the best and still think it works well with Eve too. Really not keen at all on Isla as it sounds so trendy; Grace is fine, just a bit “blah” for me compared to your other choices.

I don’t see anything wrong with going for another 1 syllable name if that’s what you’re drawn to btw- it doesn’t sound especially “matchy” to me (even with a 3 letter one). I assume you have also considered Rose as that’s the other 1 syllable very classic name (along with Eve, Grace and May)?

Fay, Blythe, Hope etc might be other options but they maybe aren’t quite as classic feeling - and while I think they are pretty, most people seem to find names like Claire, Jane, and Anne dated now.

Have you considered Anna though? As elegant, simple and classic as Eve imo - and a cool subtle sibling link in that they are both rare palindrome names too! (I think the Actor Clive Owen has daughters called Eve and Hannah for this reason, but I must admit I prefer the more simple look of similar Anna).

Eve Alexandra is great -

Grace goes the best, of your list, although I’m not mad about it. Zara is a bit light in comparison, Isla and May both v overdone - Eve is too, but it’s got lots of cultural history on its side.

Sophia, Isabel, Eleanor (Nell) and Rose are like Eve - v popular but lots of history and they go with your surname

Or maybe..

Katharine (Kate)
Felicity
Iona
Cecily
Athena
Flora
Finola
Genevieve
Oona
Stella

Thanks everyone. It’s so hard as I feel May is probably our favourite name but with McManus it doesn’t work so well.
Isla is just so popular and while I’m not that bothered I have a really popular name myself and hated it for a long time.

Ava is a no, it just seems too close to Eve. Ada isn’t really our style.

Why does it have to be so difficult 🤣

May is just so lovely - it’s such a shame it’s not ideal with your surname.

Isla is popular but it’s better to use a popular name that you love than to compromise and use something that doesn’t feel right. Popular names aren’t like they used to be so you’d be very unlucky to have two Isla’s in a class.
