I have shortlisted the following and would like thoughts please;

Asher - DH thinks it sounds girly but I like that is classic (biblical)

Aston - reminds me of Aston in Birmingham one of the roughest towns! Don’t know if this is silly?

Ashton - both quite like but is it a bit of a mouthful?

For girls;

Sienna- lovely name just worry it’s a bit popular and overused

Dhillon - we both love but worry she’d resent us if constantly mistaken for a boy?!

We also don’t want a chav name!! I don’t think any of these are chavvy but if they are please be honest?!!

Sorry I think they’re all dreadful but particularly Dhilion (is this even a name) Sienna is the least awful but they are everywhere

mumonthehill · 09/02/2025 14:42

Isla and thea are beautiful and much better than your original list. I do like Dylan spelt this way and for a boy though so maybe worth thinking about.

Words · 09/02/2025 14:36

Obviously I know that.Archie is even worse - and as for the girl, words fail me, but I didn't want to go down that route.

Why do people shy away from strong, traditional, authentic names? Why this obsession with having something different ?

@JimHalpertsWife he likes the name Caledon

Hmmm ok. I see what the problem is :)

Can I please have your opinions on Isla and Thea for a girl?

Both lovely. Isla more commonly used than Thea (ime) but would suit children and adults, and not date.

@Words He's Archie Harrison not Harrison.

I don't like the Ash names. Apart from Asher they seem dated, and there are nicer biblical names.

Sienna will be one of those names that will date. It became popular out of nowhere, probably because of Sienna Miller.
Babies called Sienna in England & Wales since 1996

Dhillon just seems a strange choice, and Dylan is a boy's name that has been given to some girls.

Most of the suggested names are not great.

If you want a name that won't date, pick something that hasn't come into use out of the current trend, or hasn't been used for decades.

If your DH likes names from fantasies, how about the name of a favourite author or a name from mythology.

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 13:45

@AvonCallingBarksdale i usually don’t care much for others however I think with names you should care what others think.

The reason because, you are inflicting judgement whether you like it or not on someone else.

when the child goes to school or gets a job, I won’t be around to help if people judge them or take the mic because of their name. So it’s only fair it’s a decent one!!

I'd flip the sounds you like to the opposite sex, tbh.

Asha is lovely for a girl and Dylan for a boy.

OSU · 09/02/2025 13:28

I would go for Asher and Sienna. Don't think Asher is at all feminine and it doesn't matter a jot if Sienna is popular. I was in a tiny class at school where of the 4 girls, 3 of us had the same name. Then the class grew and 2 new girls joined who both also had the same name! None of us were in the least bit bothered. There was just increased use of surnames 😊

AvonCallingBarksdale · 09/02/2025 13:19

Sorry, OP, I dislike all your suggested names but do think they are all quite a similar vibe. They are quite chavvy names. But…. really if those are sort of names you like you should go with them rather than shoehorning into names that you’re just not into. Who cares really what other people think??

GreyhoundGal1 · 09/02/2025 13:09

I'm sorry it's getting you down. The thing is the name is abstract right now and feels like a big deal. Once you name your child it, you will love it because it's your child's name. Most people have to compromise on a name because they don't necessarily have the same taste as their partner - I did and I wouldn't have called her that name if I was by myself but I absolutely love it now. She wouldn't have suited my choice at all. As long as the name is useable, like Asher, Sienna and Isla all are, it will be fine.

If he likes Caledon what about Callum, Cameron, Brandon, Aaron, Hudson, Harrison, Lennon, Cassian (similar to Caspian from lion the witch and the wardrobe), Jonah (sort of a mix between Jude and Asher)

PiastriThePastry · 09/02/2025 13:07

Asher is nice but I’m not really sold on your other boys names. Ayrton? Jasper? Avery? Austin?
Sienna is a pretty name but if you don’t love it, you don’t love it! Savannah? Aubrey? Claudia? Serena?

skinnyoptionsonly · 09/02/2025 13:00

Marianna

@MaltipooMama exactly re:Aston

we live outside Birmingham but not far from there so people will associate with it I think!

OP posts:
pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 12:34

@MaltipooMama i like Isla - thank you!

I also like Jude but DH thinks it’s truly and I immediately think of Jude Bellingham?

OP posts:
MaltipooMama · 09/02/2025 12:31

What about these as other options:

Girls:
Sage
Willow
Skye
Serena
Sierra
Elara
Savannah
Aria
Alina
Isla

Boys:
Hudson
Landon
Maddox
Julian
Adrian
River
Finn
Ezra
Jude
Caleb

MaltipooMama · 09/02/2025 12:27

Ashton is my favourite from your boys names, I'm actually from Birmingham and when I read Aston I immediately thought about the area, not a good association! 😂

From the girls names Sienna is my favourite, I know you said it might be too popular/common but I don't know any at all!

JimHalpertsWife · 09/02/2025 12:18

What fantasy names has he suggested?

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 12:14

I just don’t want to regret it later

OP posts:
pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 12:14

This is really getting me down. I don’t like any of the other suggestions.

did anyone just end up going with a name they like but didn’t love? It’s clear Asher and Sienna are least chav and generally most approved on this thread but I don’t love. But I like them more than the hundred of names I’ve beeen through!!

OP posts:
MedusaAndHerFavourites · 08/02/2025 23:18

I think that maybe you should consider more classic names if you want to avoid them being too trendy.

Duckyfondant · 08/02/2025 23:16

Asher or Serena. I would love to be named either of these!

arlequin · 08/02/2025 23:01

I like Asher! All the Ashers I know are Jewish.

Sienna is pretty.
