I have shortlisted the following and would like thoughts please;

Asher - DH thinks it sounds girly but I like that is classic (biblical)

Aston - reminds me of Aston in Birmingham one of the roughest towns! Don’t know if this is silly?

Ashton - both quite like but is it a bit of a mouthful?

For girls;

Sienna- lovely name just worry it’s a bit popular and overused

Dhillon - we both love but worry she’d resent us if constantly mistaken for a boy?!

We also don’t want a chav name!! I don’t think any of these are chavvy but if they are please be honest?!!

Jasmine is beautiful (I’d probably spell it with an E like the flower as that’s the far more popular way if you are in the UK - then she’s less likely to have to spell her name).

Carter isn’t my personal cup of tea - it’s not horrible and he’ll fit in with his peers fine (I know a toddler Cooper, Spencer etc). But I do prefer the sound of other surnames if that’s your taste - such as Bennett, Sullivan, Callahan, Clark, Heath, Hadley, Brody, Fraser, Lewis etc. But at least it’s not a “Son” name - I always secretly want to ask if Jenson’s dad is John, Harrison’s is Henry etc 🤣

ScentOfAMoomin · 01/03/2025 21:54

I like Jenson.

I like Asher. I'm not keen on the girls names myself.

Back to the drawing board we came up with Carter for a boy, any thoughts?

Jasmin maybe for girl?

Ashton and Sienna.

I think Dhillon with that spelling is a bit pretentious and try-too-hard, and she will constantly be correcting misspellings. Dylan with the normal spelling is OK.

Namexchangex · 10/02/2025 10:28

I like Asher and Thea! Sorry but I hate Demi. I like Dylan for a girl though

How about;
Archer
Rowan
Auden
Austin
Ellis

Willow
Lottie
Autumn
Eleni nn Leni
Daisy
Elliott

“Timeless” and not “chav” (ie. trendy which often appears downmarket) likely means going for a classic name that has probably never been in the Top 50/100- so couldnt guess the age of the bearer.

Unfortunately imo the names you have listed so far (with the possible exception of Biblical Asher or Classical Lucia) don’t sound timeless to me @pleaseguveadvicenotattack

Imo “timeless” often means old sounding - so usually Biblical or Ancient Latin/Greek with a few exceptions (such as also the names of Kings and Queens that have had frequent use like William, Edward, Emma etc). So names like Nathaniel or Serena in style rather than Ashton or Sienna (very linked to the rise of Ashton Kutchner and Sienna Miller).

Imo generally you need to avoid trends if you want to also avoid a potential future downmarket/“chav” feel or the name possibly dating. Trends currently are any celeb links, surnames or place names, “o” ending names for boys, short 2 syllable “a” or “y” ending ones for girls and nickname/diminutive style names for either sex (this list accounts for the majority of the current Top 50/100 names!)

Have you looked at the ONS lists around the 100 -300 mark? There’s a lot of classic, timeless style names on there - especially for girls. I admit for boys it’s harder as a lot of the timeless sounding boys ones are also quite popular - or they can sometimes sound a bit odd imo.

If you like the sound of Tristan and Dylan but can’t use them (and I’m really not keen on Dhillon for either sex!) - have you considered Owen or Evan for a boy? Or Susanna or Selene instead of celeb trend Sienna for a girl?

@Awwlookatmybabyspider , the Corrie character is called Asha not Asher.

Yes but it's pronounced the same, isn't it

Waterboatlass · 09/02/2025 22:58

Asher out of your boys list.

Girls, Dhillon is a Punjabi surname, is there a link? Lots of beautiful first names if so.

Sienna, Lucia, Isla, Thea: all perfectly pleasant. Well used though

Demi, Aston and Ashton much less elegant

DilemmaPenguin · 09/02/2025 22:47

How about Bastian or Sebastian for a boy?

Asha for a girl is lovely

RuthW · 09/02/2025 21:56

Asher for a girl and Dillon for a boy are best

Muddypawsies · 09/02/2025 21:47

I like Isla, Thea and Sienna.
I like Asher. Other names I like (and which your husband might go for) are:
Cassian
Tywin
Laszlo
Darius

boredwithfoodprob · 09/02/2025 20:30

I can't bare the ch** word and never use it but I have to say that alll the names in your list are a bit that way inclined. Maybe a bit popular?

Goscat · 09/02/2025 19:44

I like Asher of the boys names!

I personally really dislike Dillon for a girl and exactly associate it with being chavvy (even for a boy).

Sienna is lovely! Nice nickname potential too.

DiscoBaIIs · 09/02/2025 18:54

What about Jasper or Casper - I think they capture the vibe of Asher but are a bit cooler.

Seren/Cecily/Cecilia instead of Sienna?

pleaseguveadvicenotattack · 09/02/2025 18:52

@MrsCrabOrange i have a family member with the name and also hate it anyway!

Some own suggested K names I hate names starting with a K, they just remind me of Kardashian’s, sorry 😭

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 09/02/2025 18:03

I agree about Asher being more for a girl. I think because it makes me think of Asher in Corrie (Devs Daughter).

Ashton although I don’t like it it’s fine.

I love Sienna

I know they’re frowned upon on here but Dhillon could work if it was hyphenated with a super feminine and frilly name. However lose the H.

MrsCrabOrange · 09/02/2025 17:45

If you like Sienna would you like Serena? Might date a bit better.
