Looking for honest opinions on Grant, Grayson, Brody and Jude or suggestions for boys names of similar style. Brother to Phoebe.

Sebastian also goes really well with Phoebe. Nice name too.

mathanxiety · 07/02/2025 15:29

I only like Jude from your list. It's the only one that goes well with Phoebe too.

AllFurCoatAndFrillyKnickers · 07/02/2025 14:51

Definitely Sebastian or Jude.
I'm in my 60s, so Grayson makes me think of Larry and 'Shut than door!'.

WaltzingWaters · 07/02/2025 14:50

I love Brody, but not sure it goes with Phoebe very well.
love Jude too, but very popular at the moment. But goes well with Phoebe.

Not a fan of Grant. Grayson and Sebastian both fine.

2chocolateoranges · 07/02/2025 14:45

Only one I like is Brody but I prefer the Brodie spelling.

We have a Brodie in the family, he's in his 20s.

ginasevern · 07/02/2025 14:39

From your list I would pick Grant or Jude, probably Grant in preference. Brody will be the one to date the most and I really don't like Grayson at all.

Lyn348 · 07/02/2025 14:29

Grant is too old for child, Brody is too American for me and i don't like Greyson at all. Jude or Sebastian definitely.

bluebunnys · 07/02/2025 14:25

I only like Brody and think it goes well with Phoebe

I don't like the shortenings of Sebastian, Seb (sebaceous) or Basty (bastard) at all

Jude is the German word for Jew

Knowsley · 07/02/2025 14:19

Jenson gets shortened to Jens, so it might end up being Grays (Grace)

stickybear · 07/02/2025 13:25

I know a little Grayson, shortened to Gray, and quite like it! How about Harrison?

BuntyBeaufort · 07/02/2025 13:20

I know a couple of little Graysons and think it's awful. Not just the association with a huge middle aged man in a pink frilly frock with hair bows and Mary Janes but, as I'm old, also Larry Grayson, late comedian and tv presenter who was as camp as a row of tents.

ShakespeareInTurmoil · 07/02/2025 13:18

Not a fan of any of them but Grayson is the absolute pits.

Chuchoter · 07/02/2025 12:33

Grant - awful.
Grayson - even more awful
Brody - meaning ditch or muddy place. Ok name but the meaning is awful.

Jude - nice name.

Knowsley · 07/02/2025 12:29

Grant - bloke in EastEnders
Grayson - awful
Brody - not great
Jude - don't like it,but it's the best of a bad bunch

I like Phoebe and Sebastian is better than your shortlist, as long as you are ok with Seb.

Notellinganyone · 07/02/2025 11:17

Jude -the others are awful!

BigSilly · 07/02/2025 10:57

All dire

SemperIdem · 07/02/2025 10:56

Jude and Sebastian go well with Phoebe.

Grant is a horrible name. Like Nigel.

Grayson just makes me think of Grayson Perry, one of the biggest creeps we’re currently giving air time to, in the name of art.

Purplecatshopaholic · 07/02/2025 10:53

You have really split the crowd here op! I like all your choices actually, and I also think Sebastian goes well with Phoebe. FWIW I really like Grayson! Less keen on Grant.

JJames1 · 07/02/2025 10:51

Thanks for the advice everyone

We are now leaning to Sebastian based on what you have all said. 👍 Will update when baby arrives.

I don't understand this issue many on Mumsnet seem to worry about with names having to 'go' together, names don't have to be of the same ilk or era or the same style, there are no rules (except spelling of course 😉) it can be whatever name you want it to be, you can have a Mary and a John, a Tallulah and a Cristabelle, or an Edward and a Trixie or a Phoenix and a Susan. It absolutely doesn't matter, just pick names you love.

Grant - kinda like, I don't think I would have said that 20 years ago though!
Grayson - It's a bit wet sounding and also Grayson Perry, a marvellously bonkers person!
Brody - I really like
Jude - I really love

I've always liked Sebastian too - Its nice to say and Seb is a nice nickname :)

Good luck and congratulations :)

Itcostshowmuchnow · 07/02/2025 10:29

Moonlightstars · 07/02/2025 07:24

Brody - not a nice sound
Grant - 40 year old man who works in a dull office job that no one really understands.
Jude - will be very 2020s
Sebastian - solid name, Seb nice nickname
Grayson - bit try hard

I agree with this apart from Grant.

Grant is a mechanic.

Scentsitive · 07/02/2025 10:26

Deal. MN does suck you in!

@JJames1Sebastian is perfect.

FurryTeacup · 07/02/2025 09:48

Scentsitive · 07/02/2025 09:44

It makes sense with names like that, regardless of whether or not the name is one I like.

Alfie, Lily-Mae and Chardonnay go perfectly well together; taste is another issue, of course.

Tarquin, Matilda, Hugo and Chardonnay, not so much.

But you're right, it is a stupid name and a bad example!

There are lots of better examples of non-stupid names that don't go together very well, but I don't really care enough to dredge them up, although it'd make a good procrastination exercise...

Also procrastinating here. 😀

I’ll do the thing I’m putting off if you will, @Scentsitive. Deal?

Felicityjoy · 07/02/2025 09:48

JJames1 · 06/02/2025 23:59

I also like Sebastian but I am not sure if it fits with Phoebe

Yes, I think that’s fine.

Unless names are from completely different registers I don’t understand this "fit with sibling name" obsession some people have. They’re individuals and not going to spend much of their lives being referred to as "X and Y". Even while they’re children most people would usually say "the kids" or "Children, dinner time" most of the time and once they’re grown up they will have separate lives.
