Have decided on a name for a girl - but everyone hates it!

Delilah - is it really that bad? It's the only first name we can agree on (her middle name will be Rose) and we both love it.

Everyone we mention it to either says 'hmmm, unusual' or asks if we'll call her 'Deli' for short (have managed thus far not to point out that it's not pronounced 'Deli-lah').

Other names I like (and DP hates) are Cordelia, Mariella, Serena and Isabella (definitely liking names ending in 'a' at the moment).

Thanks guys - have read this thread out to DH and had a good giggle together about it and we've gone for 'fukkit - we love it!'

Hell, if she hates it, she can play around with it and come up with a nickname that she prefers instead!

People will associate it with the song but I like it too. Hooray for non-boring names. Have it or you will regret it. I was talked out of having the name I wanted and I regret it EVERY day.

It's not about the name unfortunately, it's about the fact that everyone will associate it with the song.
Cordelia is nice.

of all the names you mention i think it's my least favorite. On the other hand, there are so many songs about Delilah that she sure must be a muse :-) a good thing in my opinion.

I have a colleague called Cordelia and love her name- she is young and funky and so many people tell her they love her name!

and you need to agree something with your dh. the name we are converging on for ours is not my fave, but it's the only one he likes and it's his baby too!

largeginandtonic · 08/05/2008 10:41

I love it! Sod those who poke fun, they are just you got there first.

ipanemagirl · 08/05/2008 10:38

I think Delilah sounds beautiful but it's meaning is quite loaded if you mind about that sort of thing:
see here in the bible she is basically a nasty piece of work!

But a good proportion of people will not know it's meaning so what you like is obviously the most important thing.

My dh likes some really dodgy biblical names, but personally, I think to have positive meaning is really important. But each to his own!

sunnydelight · 08/05/2008 10:30

Fab name. Sod the begrudgers.

iwouldgoouttonight · 08/05/2008 10:26

Delilah Rose is a beautiful name.

[I want to have a baby girl so I can call her Delilah]

CantSleepWontSleep · 08/05/2008 10:14

I love it, and suggested it to dh for both of my pregnancies, but he vetoed it. It is a name that provokes strong reaction one way or the other, but agree that if both you and dh love it then use it and stop telling people in RL before she is born!

Also love Cordelia, which has also been vetoed by my (tasteless ) dh.

I love it. Children do tend to grow into their names and people tend to come round to names they previously didn't like, particularly if they like/love the person with the name. Go for it with complete confidence!

My folks were a bit shocked when we announced ds2's name, but they can't imagine him being called anything else now!

brimfull · 07/05/2008 23:37

I love it,and Rose is lovely too (my dd's name )

unknownrebelbang · 07/05/2008 23:33

Delilah is the chant for our local footie team, so I wouldn't choose it, but it's your choice, if you like it stuff everyone else.

Isobella is a personal favourite of mine.

Tortington · 07/05/2008 23:31

i like it

tell everyone else to fuck off if you like it

Lilah is a good abbreviation (rather than "Deli")

I think Delilah is a lovely name, if you like it use it, ignore what everyone else says she's your baby after all.

I also love the name Cordelia.

jessikart · 07/05/2008 23:17

I think it's definitely a Marmite name - love it or hate it, there's no middle ground!

My other plan is to wait until the great emotional upheaval of the birth and then say 'I want to call her....' knowing that DP will be so awestruck by her arrival that he will agree to anything! Hell, it worked last time

But then again, I just thought of that fab song from last year 'Hey there Delilah' and went all gooey...

monkeysmama · 07/05/2008 23:12

I love it! I think it is a lovely original name. Being able to agree on a name you love is great so stick with it! MM

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/05/2008 23:10

Fuck em. Doesnt matter to anyone cept your daughter to be, and how you think it'll look on her CV when she's 21 and looking for a job

QuintessentialShadows · 07/05/2008 23:10

Love Dehlila. Could be Layla for short if she wants it shortened. (Better than Deli.) Or Della. or Lily. Fantastic name!
