I have a 3yr old daughter called Jemima and am pregnant with her sister. I love love love the name Cosima but is it just silly to have 2 names with the same last 3 letters?
please help me decide!!!

Too similar.

LBFseBrom · 07/02/2025 21:22

Yes it is, choose a name that doesn't have an 'a' sound at the end. i hope your surname doesn't

MedusaAndHerFavourites · 07/02/2025 21:20

As someone who has a child by one of those names I really would dissuade you if that combination. Singularly you can get away wi her but together - no one will be in doubt that you're a pretentious twat.
Sorry.

You do know both Jemima and Cosima can be shortened to Mimi???
Very similar and risks them both having the same shortened name.

The Cosima I know gets called Cosi (pronounced Cozzi) and I know two Jemima's - one is Jem and the other is Mima!

Emanwenym · 07/02/2025 18:16

@StormingNorman ,it's Cos-im-a with the stress on the Cos in the UK

mathanxiety · 07/02/2025 18:16

The spelling doesn't matter. The emphasis falls on different syllables, so imo it would be fine.

It would be a little like 'Anastasia' and 'Sophia'.

Both lovely names.

StormingNorman · 07/02/2025 18:02

Jem-eye-ma and Cos-ee-ma some quite different. I’d use them both for sisters.

Reallybadidea · 07/02/2025 17:58

Emanwenym · 07/02/2025 17:54

Oh OK. Smile

Pointless bit of information taking up valuable space in my brain 😆

mikado1 · 07/02/2025 17:56

DramaAlpaca · 04/02/2025 22:25

They are pronounced quite differently so it doesn't matter that the endings look the same written down.

jem-EYE-mah is very different to COZ-i-mah

So I say go for it.

Agree completely. Wouldn't see them in the same ballpark. Both really lovely, congratulations.

Emanwenym · 07/02/2025 17:54

Oh OK. Smile

Who on earth would shorten Cosima to Mimi?

Nigella Lawson

MrsCrabOrange · 07/02/2025 17:33

Too similar and also just really not a nice name.

theduchessofspork · 07/02/2025 01:04

I think it’s fine - they are both nice names

lilyanna80 · 05/02/2025 14:14

Beyond the fact I’m not a fan of the name (what’s is shorted to, Cos? Cossie like swimming cossie?) It is a bit similar.

ginasevern · 05/02/2025 12:40

I love both names and can't see that they would clash in any way at all. They are both distinctly different.

RuthW · 05/02/2025 12:15

It's fine.

shoopshoopdedoo · 05/02/2025 12:05

Trampoline · 04/02/2025 22:48

I'd never think they were similar names until i see them in writing - they don't rhyme at all, so I think go for it!

Same!

I’d say them as Jem-EYE-ma and COZ-ee-ma, so the stress is quite different? Would avoid if you plan to say Jem-EYE-ma and Cos-EYE-ma!

Jessieshome · 05/02/2025 11:57

It's completely fine, both lovely names. It's only the 'ma' at the end that is the same, the rest of the names are said quite differently, or differently enough.

Go for it!

Scentsitive · 05/02/2025 11:18

They're pronounced very differently so it's fine.

Emanwenym · 05/02/2025 11:15

The -ima sounds different so I think they're OK for sisters. Both names are nice.

Pumpkincozynights · 05/02/2025 07:58

I’ve heard worse in terms of similar names/matching names so I’d say it’s fine.

user1492757084 · 05/02/2025 05:12

Both gorgeous names. They don't really rhyme; they have very different rhythms and pronunciations.

Jemima = jeh - MIME - uh
Cosima = COH - seh - muh

bridgetreilly · 05/02/2025 02:14

They don’t rhyme. It’s fine.

Personally I don’t like the name Cosima, though.
