Is this a completely ridiculous idea? I really like the name but I’ve lost sight of whether this is downright silly

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Don’t live your life for baby and toddler groups - and in lots you just have the child’s name mentioned in the group - in my experience.

Also don’t choose a name by how well it goes with yours. A pp has given suggestions paired with your name. I think it’s fine to think that way with siblings and especially twins as they’ll be commonly paired together.

I do think the issue of confusion could come up if your husband is calling for one of you. Other siblings will obviously call you mum.

So sorry OP but I laughed out loud.

Me too!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/01/2025 22:44

Choose the name you love. I can’t remember ever saying to anyone “Hello my name is X and this is my daughter Y”. It just never happens, you become known as “Y’s mum” or by your own name in your life separate to your daughter.

It happens at baby and toddler groups, but that's about all.

Polly is an excellent name. Use it with pride.

okay thanks for all opinions!!!

I do like Poppy so maybe that is the better choice

So many Poppys though and so few Pollys. I should know, I have a Polly (and have also yet to meet a dog called Polly). Funnily enough we never considered calling her Pollyanna when she was born but we often use that as her nickname now. There's something to be said for having that, or similar, as an option.

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 30/01/2025 22:25

I think it’s lovely! You get so many father and son with same names so why not Holly and Polly!
Polly is a gorgeous name.

Blusterylimp · 30/01/2025 22:14

I’d be more worried about her constantly being told to put the kettle on.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 30/01/2025 22:11

I know a dad Olly who has a daughter called Molly.

And I know a Tam with a son Sam.

It’s funny, but I’ve got used to it.

Holly & Ada
Holly & Flora
Holly & Rose
Holly & Gracie

Holly & Mariella

I know a mum Kellie and her daughter Ellie. It seemed a bit funny when she was born, but don't even really notice now she is 9.

TheLymeTrew · 30/01/2025 21:21

Florence19791 · 30/01/2025 17:27

I know a Joanne with a son called Joe and a daughter called Anne.

No way!!!

SareBear87 · 30/01/2025 21:16

I think it's fine.
All the women in my family have names beginning with S and my poor nan has just given up. I get called every aunt and cousin before she gets to my name.

I do think it depends on who you socialise with though.

bzarda · 30/01/2025 20:50

I love this name but my husband sadly vetoed it for our daughter.
It will not matter, you'll just be known as Polly's mum in baby groups and when she grows up you'll be mum, hardly anyone will be saying your names together. I wouldn't give it a passing thought if I met a Polly and a Holly.

WhereAreWeNow · 30/01/2025 20:49

It's a nice name but I think it's a mistake to choose a name so close to your own.

NewHeaven · 30/01/2025 20:44

Here are some names that i posted on another thread; they might not be your cup of tea but they're better than Polly.

I wouldn’t let anyone put you off… particularly some of the strangely unnecessarily mean people on this thread!

Mountainfrog · 30/01/2025 20:32

What about Poppy?

The limerick will write itself

NewHeaven · 30/01/2025 20:29

Please don't because your future teenage daughter will hate you for doing this.

elliesmummy19 · 30/01/2025 20:24

I think it’s fine. I can see I’m in the minority here! It might just be because Polly is currently my most favourite girl name though.

BananaNirvana · 30/01/2025 19:58

plunpun · 30/01/2025 18:59

I wouldn't have thought anything of it until I actually met and now know a mum and daughter with almost identical names. It evokes a feeling that the mum has prevented the daughter having her own identify or wants to be weirdly linked to her like a twosome. It's odd.
Sorry if that's not what you want to hear but it's a genuine albeit surprising response I had to it.

Agree. So many beautiful names and out there, why would you do this?

Floralnomad · 30/01/2025 19:36

I wouldn’t , it sounds a bit silly plus it’s a terrible name .

whereshouldistart · 30/01/2025 19:34

My youngest kids name rhymes with our pets name. It’s genuinely so irritating, I mix them up all the time and it’s embarrassing telling people. Don’t do it op, you may not regret it but guarantee you’ll be mixed up for life. What about Poppy?

GoodVibesHere · 30/01/2025 19:05

Seriously?! Very daft! What next, a sibling called Dolly?

If you do it you'll regret naming her Polly for sure, if someone calls up the stairs 'Polly where are you' etc then you're going to mishear it all the time which would drive you mad surely?
