Tale as old as time me and hubby can't agree on names he's more traditional I'm more different

Names I like are Nova, Astrid, Ember and Freya.
He likes Melissa, Maree and Aurora.

I appreciate my some won't like my name choices and that's ok.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Nova, Astrid, and Aurora all have a space vibe. Luna or Sky? I don't think your names are that different in style really so hopefully you'll find something that works for both of you.

Laurel is lovely and quite unusual.
Ismay
Josephine

Ohhh great idea he's 100% against Nova which is my top name.

Nova… just makes me think of the festival in Israel and what happened there.
Astrid sounds like a planet.
Ember is sweet.. not common, but not unnecessarily kooky.
Freya… popular but cute.

Not a fan of the names your husband has chosen.

Choosing your kids name is fun, and whatever you go for, you will look back and think you can’t imagine them as anything else. Don’t pay too much attention to what contributors to this thread say. You will work together with your husband and you will find a lush name that you both like.

I have a cat with one of these names. All I would say is that if you are going to call your child something unusual it is handy to give them a more mainstream middle name in case they want to go by that for professional reasons later.

My suggestion is that each of you take your names and rank in order of preference.
Now in alternate weeks refer aloud to your bump as Maree or Nova or whatever. I recommend not doing this in front of friends and family, they won't help.
We went completely off some of our favourite names. It just didn't work for us when we spoke it aloud and we got to a short list we both liked very quickly.

Dairymilkisminging · 23/01/2025 17:56

Well he called his names traditional. Obviously I'm not going to strong arm him but if people have suggestions in the same kind of style as these would be great.

I like annika suggested upthread. We've tried baby names lists and my list seems to grow and his stays the same.

See also: Chris Martin’s kid Apple.

Doesn’t make it a name. Makes it a laughing stock.

I know a couple of Apples, as it were. There’s an Ember Jones too, an author!

Oh yes it is! Google Ember Smith of California …

You have to find one you both like. You can’t force him into liking yours or strong arm him into picking one he doesn’t like, just like he can’t do the same to you.

So you go round and round until you find one you both like.

In his defence though, you need to actually pick names. “Ember” is not a fucking name 🤦‍♀️

Could you look up a list of top 500 baby names and both tick off any you like and see if any are the same?

Talipesmum · 23/01/2025 17:41

Ha, I’d say Maree and Aurora are less traditional than Freya and Astrid!

Doesn’t feel like there’s that much difference in name styles. Good luck!
