Margot - is it too popular? Any alternatives?

We like the name Margot and the nickname Maggie, but are conscious that it has really risen in popularity in recent years. Would welcome thoughts on whether you think it is too popular and risks becoming overdone?

And would be keen to hear any suggestions of classic pretty names that are similar but maybe slightly less popular!

Thanks!

Margot Robbie is a great woman. I prefer the more modern Margot to Margaret but it is derived from there I suppose which is still good first British prime minister and all. I don't think it's bad to share names with famous people tbh

*forgot to say woman prime minister lol

I'd say too popular because of Margot Robbie.

But I prefere Margot to Margaret if you want Maggie.

My daughter (10y) has a friend called Margot/Maggie. I love it. Weren’t many around 10yrs ago but it’s a good name. You can’t control what their friends call them and she is a Mags. So that’s something to consider.

I was told to practice shouting the name 10 times up the stairs and as loudly as you can across the park,to see if you are really going to love it when it counts!

I actually didn’t do that - but should have done! We have ended up just daily calling her the nickname we wanted. There was no point in the long version! Causes a little confusion.

So if you love Maggie, then just call her that. No need for the Margot unless you are actually going to use it.

Bankin · 25/01/2025 15:24

Love it!

Wouldn't worry about "popularity" the name noah is the second most popular name and I don't know any young Noah's.

YellowGoldie · 25/01/2025 15:19

I have a 2yo and I know of 4 Margot/Margaux and 1 Maggie. I love the name and none of the girls know each other

bluebunnys · 25/01/2025 15:02

Margaret works so much better in the UK!

LostittoBostik · 25/01/2025 14:46

Lots of Margots at the moment.

Martha?
Marnie?
Marguerite?

GoodQueenBess · 25/01/2025 14:42

@JC03745 , Margeaux is Marjo.

Margot and Maggie are both diminutives of Margaret. Using Maggie as a nn of Margot seems a bit silly.

bluebunnys · 24/01/2025 13:55

Margeaux is slightly better.

Margaux is the more popular spelling in France, pronounced Mar-goh

I strongly dislike the Margot spelling as it s pronounced Mar-gott in Germany and other countries outside of France

ilikeeggs · 23/01/2025 21:47

I’ve met quite a few in my area, all aged 5 or under.

Spaceracers · 23/01/2025 21:17

I think it depends where you are geographically! Margot seems v popular in London

I like Audrey or Audrina as an alternative

My friend is Audra, also lovely.

ru53 · 23/01/2025 20:53

Margeaux would be pronounced Mar-jo, wouldn't it? 😬

Would it? I'd always thought that was the original, French spelling- but I'm not French and happy to be corrected.

Chocolatehobnobs25 · 23/01/2025 20:45

There are 3 in my daughter’s nursery class! But it is a lovely name.

Mrburnshound · 23/01/2025 20:42

I like Audrey or Audrina as an alternative

London here - in infant school there's probably one per year. It's a super cool name, i like it!

queenofthewild · 23/01/2025 20:35

I think it's beautiful and elegant.

There are many in my DD's reception year it's by far the most common name. I'd find an alternative.

Interesting - my name was quite popular in my birth year and there were 7 (!) of us in one class so I'd rather minimise the chance of that happening to my daughter.

Thanks all for the feedback as well as the alternative name suggestions - some really lovely options!

I thought Margot and Maggie were both short for Margaret, which is awful imo. Makes me think of Thatcher!

Spring2025 · 23/01/2025 20:25

There are 3 Margots in my DD's drama class (3-5 year olds).

SJM1988 · 23/01/2025 20:19

Personally I wouldn't worry about having a popular name. We have 2 top 10 names and never had someone in the same class or activity with the same name.
My DD, we have a couple of variations of her nickname in a one activity but they are the opposite gender.

I find those names that are trying to be unique are becoming too popular....the amount of variations on Amelia is crazy at my DD nursery. None actually Amelia though

MissJoGrant · 23/01/2025 20:19

I've been teaching for a long time and I don't believe I've ever taught a Margot.
I like it.
