After some Googling, it seems the original “article” was essentially a retelling of a Reddit post. This is what it said:

Yesterday a new student joined the early childcare school my wife works at. She made sure to double check with the parent if there were any nicknames they use or anything to make sure she understood the pronunciation.
This little girl was named Jeilyi, pronounced Jelly.

Ahh so it was someone who knew someone who knew someone else? 😆

Mudonstairs · 12/01/2025 23:52

Tbh I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at that name. I would assume the name may mean something or be popular in another language or culture 🤷🏻‍♀️ now if it was Bakyn-Panyni I would have been beside myself.

Poor child is most likely to shorten their name to Jay when older.

That to me reads as Jay-Leigh, are we sure it’s pronounced Jelly? Confused

I just looked up the article and th me spelling was actually Jeilyi. That’s pretty unnecessarily weirdly spelt.

The Jeilyi spelling makes me think Jail-ey. Not a great association...
But yeah some people seem to think of their kid's name as their (the parents') chance to stand out, without thinking or caring that the baby will have to live their whole lives (or until they're old enough to change it) with that name.

Ok.. great guesses, thanks for taking part :)) it was Jelli. I kind of like it. I once had a client contact called Cupcake..

The person who went to the press about this must have lived a very sheltered life if that's the oddest name/spelling they've encountered! I was expecting something much more out there (although my guess of Jelleigh-Baebii wasn't a million miles off!)

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/01/2025 19:23

I know what it is I’ve read it. I won’t spoil it though.

I saw this article so I won't spoil the game but it gave me a laugh when I read it before I remembered that it's real and then I felt very sorry for the child Sad

Some of these guesses aren't too far off!
