Quentin and other boys names...

Mobellij · 10/01/2025 22:56

We were almost 100% on Quentin but then decided to go back and revise the shortlist...

We do like Quentin, like Quentin Blake

Vincent...the potential NN Vinnie though conjures Vinnie Jones

Ralph... too popular?

Magnus... conjuring Scandinavian origins?

Lucian... but too much with a last name beginning with L

Raphael... again issue with last name starting L?

Francis...too catholic?

Opinions and advice welcome

They might not but adults will.

Was this guy a mass murderer or something? Grin

sixtiesbaby88 · 17/01/2025 08:33

Quincy
Reuben

Kids today won't care about your old associations. They're more likely to think Tarantino or Blake and, most importantly of any other kids called Quentin. The one we know is a friend of dc's and as he's a lovely boy, the name has really grown on me.

Bessienol · 12/01/2025 21:33

I’m really surprised people saying the name Quentin is cool

Quentin Crisp! 😂

rwalker · 16/01/2025 20:45

Sack off Quentin a bully’s dream

rainingsnoring · 16/01/2025 20:37

I'm not very helpful because I like all your names.
Magnus and Raphael are particularly great.
Do you like Victor, Lucius, Soren or Caspian?

Or

Kids today will probably know Quentin Blake and Quentin Tarantino, rather than Quentin Crisp (I had no idea who he was myself).

EcruCardigan · 16/01/2025 17:38

Quentin Crisp - Wikipedia

VenusClapTrap · 16/01/2025 16:05

I love Magnus, Lucian and Francis. They are among my favourite names.

bluebunnys · 16/01/2025 15:05

I also like Raphael but if your surname begins with an L, I'd probably avoid

bluebunnys · 15/01/2025 07:37

I like Quentin and Vincent.

Geranyums · 14/01/2025 11:29

Think about potential nicknames too, op.

Quentin shortens to Quinn or Q, which I think works well.

Vincent and Raphael will probably be Vinnie and Raffie, which are less nice imo

Magnus might become Maggie Shock

Geranyums · 13/01/2025 14:01

My favourites are Quentin and Raphael.

I don't like Magnus (know one who gets called Mag/Maggie) or Lucian (gets mispronounced Looshan) and Francis reminds me of the pope.

Good luck op!

Funderthighs · 13/01/2025 09:00

Magnus is a fab name.

toastofthetown · 13/01/2025 08:54

Quentin - not a fan, no real reason just not a nice sounding name to me. I also much prefer every other name on your list
Vincent - love Vincent, hate Vincent and Vinnie so removed it from my list
Ralph - too popular is subjective and popularity can be area dependent (see thread of the Mumsnetter who had four Vincents her in sons class). Popular names now are less popular than they used to be, and Ralph is at a level where you’ll probably meet a few out and about, but likely won’t be multiple Ralphs in every classroom, club and outing). 0.18% of boys were called Ralph in 2023.
Magnus - I love it and don’t think it’s too Scandinavian, but my husband vetoed it because he thought it was
Lucian - I like the name and I generally like alliteration too
Raphael - I like Raphael, but the blurring L would bother me a bit too. It’s not awful and, but if there were other names I’d probably use that as a dealbreaker
Francis - also really like Francis and don’t think it’s too Catholic

Bienemaias · 13/01/2025 08:41

People's associations will be based on who they know or have met. I only know one Quentin who's 17 and pretty cool - he's sporty, clever and funny. I guess there's Quentin Blake and Quentin Tarantino, although not sure they're particularly cool?

I like that it's a classic well known name that's not too popular.

I also like Raphael from the op's suggestions.

I'm not keen on the others especially Francis (Pope) or Ralph.

EcruCardigan · 13/01/2025 08:25

@Bessienol , me too. I know an adult one and it seems a bit too different and not in a good way.

Bienemaias · 12/01/2025 22:57

I think Quentin is a great underused classic and Q is a cool initial or even nickname. It's due a revival imo.

Bessienol · 12/01/2025 21:33

I’m really surprised people saying the name Quentin is cool

EcruCardigan · 11/01/2025 10:03

Quentin - I don't like it at all
Vincent. - I don't like it at all. Vinnie and Vince both awful
Ralph - Ralf or Raif? No
Magnus - fine
Lucian - Lucy Anne
Raphael - I don't like it at all, Raph is not good
Francis - like

Moreteaandchocolate · 11/01/2025 08:46

My favourites are Vincent (l like Vinnie), Ralph (I like Raffy / Rafe / Ralphy nn’s), Raphael (again like the nn options) and Francis (because I like Frank / Frankie). Lucian is also quite nice.

Mumofgirls2017 · 11/01/2025 08:16

Like Quentin but know it’s marmite. Love Magnus and Vincent. Meh on Lucian but generally love alliterative names. Other suggestions

victor
leonard
rufus
silas
cedric
sidney
rafe
oswin
ernest
atticus
eric

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 11/01/2025 08:02

I like Quentin, although it reminds me of the grumpy uncle in the Famous Five books.

Magnus is my favourite. I love this name but sadly DH vetoed it.

Bienemaias · 11/01/2025 07:56

Quentin is my favourite - it's cool but not too popular, a timeless classic.

Vincent has s also great but I'm less keen on Vinnie.

I quite like Magnus, especially if you did have Scandinavian roots.

Do any of them go better with your surname?
