Quentin and other boys names...

Mobellij · 10/01/2025 22:56

We were almost 100% on Quentin but then decided to go back and revise the shortlist...

We do like Quentin, like Quentin Blake

Vincent...the potential NN Vinnie though conjures Vinnie Jones

Ralph... too popular?

Magnus... conjuring Scandinavian origins?

Lucian... but too much with a last name beginning with L

Raphael... again issue with last name starting L?

Francis...too catholic?

Opinions and advice welcome

Quentin isn’t awful as such but to me it has a bit of a ‘posh’ private schoolboy vibe which massively puts me off any name

EcruCardigan · 15/03/2025 15:48

@RobertaFirmino , most of the saints were Catholic saints. Francis is strongly associated with the Catholic Church.

RobertaFirmino · 14/03/2025 21:04

All of the names, except Lucian, on your list were saints. So don't worry about Francis sounding too Catholic.
I'm an old bag and remember when Quentin was thought of as very, very camp. There are other Vincents besides VJ, Van Gogh, Vince Clarke, Vini Reilly, Vincent Kompany (yes, he was a footballer but he's a very nice one!). Your DS's peer group won't have a clue about Vinnie Jones anyway.

Overhaul54 · 13/03/2025 22:07

I don't like Quentin. Bit weak and pretentious.
I do know a cool Crispin (NN Spin) and a lovely Blake ( NN Seven).

itsnothingoriginal · 13/03/2025 21:35

I think Quentin is rather pompous. Love Edmund if you're still considering that one and also Edwin.

Good luck!

Zeldasie · 13/03/2025 11:59

Quentin is my favourite but I also like Magnus

Not keen on Francis or Ralph

SayWhat25 · 12/03/2025 12:17

I don’t like your names sorry. Not my taste at all. I do like Raphael but I wouldn’t use it myself. Also Vincent is ok. Quentin is the worst.

OssieShowman · 12/03/2025 12:15

If you like Quentin … here’s another one similar.
a boy in daughter’s class was named Quilon.
I loved it, very distinctive.

Noonecaresifyounamechange · 12/03/2025 12:11

Vincent.. love! I don’t jump to Vinnie jones, maybe it’s an age thing?
Magnus... love this name. strong & bold.
Francis...as a Catholic, and despite the obvious it doesn’t scream “I’m a Catholic” like some other names. Francis is a beautiful name with nice nn options too.

Quentin..not a fan.

Triakne · 12/03/2025 11:42

Others to consider -
Gabriel
Sebastian
Alexander
Leander
Fabian

Zeldasie · 12/03/2025 11:29

I'm biased but I think Quentin is a great name Smile

There is actually one other a couple of years below in my ds's school, which surprised me as it's not that common.

StScholastica · 26/02/2025 22:35

If you are avoiding Catholic names, you might want to veto Vincent.

I also prefer Quentin. It's a well known name that's classy and cool but not overused. Q or Quinn are good nickname options.

I'm not keen n Edmund or Edgar at all, and they may end up as Ed (which imo is overused and dull)

I also quite like Raphael (but may run into an L starting surname)

peaceinourtime · 24/02/2025 08:42

From your list Quentin 100 percent. Magnus is nice too.

What did you go for, op? Good luck with the birth!

We actually now are more between Edmund and Edgar!

Thank you

Mishmashs · 07/02/2025 08:31

quentin is such a cool name! I’ve never met one. It makes me think of uncle Quentin from the Famous Five.

bluebunnys · 07/02/2025 08:27

If you like Quentin and Rufus, how about Reuben?

user2848502016 · 21/01/2025 20:43

Edmund is much nicer than Quentin.
Rufus is nice too, I wouldn't think it was a dog's name particularly!

bluebunnys · 20/01/2025 23:05

I still like Quentin best. It's a strong classic that everyone knows but it's not too widely used. I think most kids would think of the lovely illustrator Quentin Blake (or Tarantino)

Vincent is nice too. I'm not so keen on Vin and I find Vinnie a little cutesy/gangstery.

I'm not keen on Rufus at all

Good luck!

Agree

I like Quentin (and your other names). It feels a little posh but also a bit bohemian. Rufus is a great name too.

what about
Julian
Fabian
Jasper
Gustave
Anatole
Leonard

Mobellij · 20/01/2025 22:53

Thank you for feedback.

Looking at ONS stats tables Vincent + Vinnie + Vinny makes it quite popular and can see there being potential for multiples in class etc, though I've not yet personally met another, hairdresser's grandson is Vinnie.

Brought up Rufus but perhaps discarded as being a dogs name?

Thinking of Edmund, but don't know if will blend into a sea of Ed's and Ted's.

Still quite stuck on Quentin...I accept though it seems to be a marmite name. It's clear PIL aren't keen though hasn't put DH off. They brought up Quentin Crisp but we had never heard of them. I quite like Q as a nickname.

I think we have nixed Francis and Magnus.

Difficult as people say we have time but we haven't been able to pick a boys name decisively since we started looking at baby names for our first five years ago so feels we are running out of time fast!

Also as we are that age lots of names are out as we have close friends with children of that name already.

Lucien Lancaster
Raphael Lewis.

Honestly I think it's ok with the l's. These are my favourite two
