What does the name Alfie make you think of?

I think its a classic boys name and its one of my current favourites. My husband says he just thinks of Alfie Moon from Eastenders and thinks its a bit of a common name for that reason. I've never watched Eastenders so don't have these connotations! Will everyone else?

When I was married, we had a cat called Alfie (Alf for short) he was an absolute arsehole - naughty, vicious, and vengeful. He was still nicer than the ex-husband, though.

Els1e · 08/01/2025 18:13

Alfie - the 60's film with Michael Caine or Alfie Boe. I like the name

SevenMoon · 08/01/2025 18:10

I think Alfred is a fine old fashioned name.

PokerFriedDips · 08/01/2025 18:10

My first thought was the puppet character who is Alf rather than Alfie.
I don't like giving children names that are diminutives of more formal names. Alfie is a diminutive of Alfred and Alfred is on my veto list.

Alfie and Alf.....old men in flat caps and braces playing dominoes.

Sunnyflow · 08/01/2025 18:02

Dreadful. The opposite of classic.
Badly-behaved child who annoys the rest of the class.

This.

JSMill · 08/01/2025 18:00

I work in a primary school. It's been a very popular name for several years and I have never worked with a well behaved Alfie!

ClassicStripe · 08/01/2025 17:37

I once taught a class which 10% of the children were called Alfie. The other class in the year group also had multiple Alfies. Just too many of them.

Bologneselove · 08/01/2025 17:16

I agree, first thing I thought of.

NPET · 08/01/2025 17:14

Jude Law or Michael Caine (or wasn't it sung by our Cilla?)

Cockapoo, maltipoo, jackshund.. or a cat. Male equivalent of Bella.

This just made me snort tea

Quite common and regularly the "naughty child" along with Archie!

This. It's the Wayne and Kevin of this generation...!

This along with Fee-o (Theo) and Noah

Pieceofpurplesky · 08/01/2025 17:10

At least one in every class I teach. Some lovely and some cheeky. It's a solid name but quite popular

HellofromJohnCraven · 08/01/2025 17:10

Alfie and Annie Rose

LadyRoughDiamond · 08/01/2025 17:09

Teacher here - every Alfie that I’ve taught has been badly behaved. Not unpleasant, just irritating and exhausting. Hoping one comes along one year to break the cycle. See also: Jayden, Colby, Cody, Cory, Albie and Archie (and their various spellings).

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 08/01/2025 17:06

Alfie Moon, and the Cilla song, Aaalffiiiee.

Parents trying to be cool and failing. It's not a name-it's shortening. At least use a full name and give him choices....

Catandsquirrel · 08/01/2025 16:51

In full, Alfred the Great. Just Alfie, not as great.

Long version is fab, as is Albert. Short -ie names as full version are sounding dated already to me, not as dignified and he has the option to shorten it as you say.

BodyKeepingScore · 08/01/2025 16:51

It's a cute name on a child, but not a name I'd take seriously on an adult male.

LovelyDaaling · 08/01/2025 16:49

It's ok for a child, maybe not so much as they grow up?

Sunnyflow · 08/01/2025 16:46

It’s common but not common as in ‘chavvy’

I do think it's becoming 'chavvy'

Gowlett · 08/01/2025 16:44

What’s it all about, Alfie?

StopStartStop · 08/01/2025 16:43

A dog.
