Which girls name would you pick?

Ella
Eva
Stella
Sophia

Which would you go for and why?
I don’t love any of them but they’re literally the only ones my husband and I can agree we both like. We have very different taste and it took us a long time to even get to this point.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
EcruCardigan · 08/01/2025 13:35

It is popular for a reason. Fashion. Gladys was a top name once.

17caterpillars1mouse · 08/01/2025 13:27

Ella - I like this, it's simple, classic and I don't think will date. I can imagine an Ella at every age. It's not overly exciting but it is a lovely name and will do her well in life whatever she might want to do

Eva - thevworld doesn't need any more Eva's!

Stella - I like it, it's a bit different, more unexpected than your other names.

Sophia - it's OK but just very everywhere at the moment. I prefer the simplicity of Sophie.

Have you considered Estella?

user1492757084 · 08/01/2025 13:13

My favourite is Ella.
It is popular for a reason.
Stella is nice.
I Iike Sophie but not Eva.

Others ..
Aster
Ester
Ellen
Sally
Adele

LaDeeDaDeeDa · 08/01/2025 08:40

Ella
Eva
Stella
Sophia

......

I hate Stella. Sounds like a beverage.

Ella is a bit cutesy.
Eva is lovely.
Sophia is lovely.

So you like Eloise?

Fontainebleau007 · 08/01/2025 08:25

I like Ella. There's maybe one in my area that I know of.
Eva and Stella are nice.
Really dislike Sophia, it's more overused where I am.

1apenny2apenny · 08/01/2025 08:11

Sophia for me. Have you thought of Ester rather than Stella (it is the name of a beer)!

Marcipix · 08/01/2025 08:04

Sophia

EcruCardigan · 08/01/2025 07:57

@bananamum13 , if you combine the stats for Sophia and Sofia, it's probably more popular than the top name. (2023 numbers)
Babies called Sophia in England & Wales since 1996 (1679)
Babies called Sofia in England & Wales since 1996 (1514)
Babies called Olivia in England & Wales since 1996 (2906)
Babies called Ella in England & Wales since 1996 (1307)
Babies called Eva in England & Wales since 1996 (867)
Babies called Stella in England & Wales since 1996 (137)

Ella disappears into all the El-, Ellie, -ella names, and Eva into the Evie, Ava, Ivy type names.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/01/2025 07:07

Stella, it's much more unusual.

The only Stella I know is a very cool 20 year old. Nickname is Lala.

mathanxiety · 08/01/2025 04:04

Stella, by a long shot.

It has a lot of pzazz.

MumChp · 08/01/2025 03:51

Sophia!

Andoutcomethewolves · 08/01/2025 03:48

Stella. Or maybe Estelle or Estrela? The others are just a bit.. meh

WildCherryBlossom · 08/01/2025 03:34

Stella!

OzCalling · 08/01/2025 00:03

Ella or Eva

I have an Eva - MN hates it and says it’s overused but in our experience there are far more Eve/Evies. DD is 20 and has only come across two other Evas socially. In her massive school of 1000 pupils she was the only one.

yakame · 08/01/2025 00:02

Love Stella, never met a Stella in my whole 14 years of working in early years, the other names are very common I think

StartupRepair · 07/01/2025 23:55

Love Stella. Strong, pretty and only one obvious spelling.

wandawaves · 07/01/2025 23:54

Sophia would be my choice out of those, though it is very popular.
Ella is too overused.
Eva is nice.
Stella is not my style, but inoffensive. I prefer Estelle (but not Estella).

bananamum13 · 07/01/2025 23:54

Estella would be better than Stella

bananamum13 · 07/01/2025 23:53

Stella = beer
Eva & Ella - very popular
Sophia is also quite popular but not as much as the 2 others

SunshineFlowersFood · 07/01/2025 23:52

I like Stella. It's got something that the others are maybe lacking (for me anyway). All perfectly fine and lovely names though. Could you try to use the other names you liked as a middle?

Firsttimebabymummy · 07/01/2025 23:50

Bessienol · 07/01/2025 18:14

I like Sophia

the others aren’t my taste

Eva for me I think. It has a lot going for it- popular name that is well liked but at least is also fairly classic (I know ones of different ages), it’s also very international and easy to spell.

Sophia is also those things but the spelling issue might be annoying (Sofia is nearly as popular).

Ella is most of those things too - but also feels slightly “trendy nickname” to me and not quite as classic imo.

Stella is the odd one out in a way as it’s surprisingly underused (both in the UK and internationally) which has positives and minuses- Stella does have the lovely, obvious meaning though as a bonus. If you are at all bothered about popularity (I’m not), it’s the one to pick.

For me it’s first choice Eva, 2nd Stella but it’s pretty close. I’m assuming you’ve considered and rejected Anna and Lara? Those are two of my faves and would seem to fit your style (short, fairly classic, popular, international).

Sophia , Rosie, Clara, Cerys, Freya, Francesca, isobel, Waiting....good luck.
,

All the ones above after impressive redoubtable women.
Others I love, Sophie, Jaqueline, Georgia and Jessica, Elodie, Hannah, Mica. I'll stop now... good luck.

OnLockdown · 07/01/2025 23:34

What about Estella or Ava?
