Which girls name would you pick?

Ella
Eva
Stella
Sophia

Which would you go for and why?
I don’t love any of them but they’re literally the only ones my husband and I can agree we both like. We have very different taste and it took us a long time to even get to this point.

@LoudPlumDog I am sorry for the loss of your Ella.

EcruCardigan · 08/01/2025 19:14

@artohmyletmehelp It's not the person who's dull, it's the name.

Ella - I like this, it's simple, classic and I don't think will date. I can imagine an Ella at every age. It's not overly exciting but it is a lovely name and will do her well in life whatever she might want to do

Eva - thevworld doesn't need any more Eva's!

Stella - I like it, it's a bit different, more unexpected than your other names.

Sophia - it's OK but just very everywhere at the moment. I prefer the simplicity of Sophie.

Have you considered Estella?

I have an Ella and I picked it for the exact reasons this poster has mentioned

I really dislike stella

I like Sophia , but I like normal names and I'm not bothered by popularity

Stella

Biased because I have one (3yo)

She has always been enthusiastically complimented on her name by everyone who asks, especially in Europe 'oh Stella, like star!'

I think it suits a child and an adult and is strong but pretty at the same time.

For what it's worth the 'beer' reference has never been a problem, but maybe that will be for the teenage years, who knows.

I had a very good friend named Stella as a child, I was very fond of her. Great name.

I love Eva but my gosh there are soooo many Evies and Evas and Ava’s. Ella I find a bit nothingy and again it’s just sooo common. They’re always paired with the obligatory Rose/May/Grace which makes them overused and dull. The world doesn’t need yet more Evie-Mays.

I don’t like Stella at all.

I don't think Ella, May or Grace are dull. I know some very fine examples...

I find Ella a bit nothingy too. Maybe because I've lived in Spain and Portugal where Ella means "she".

I do like them all but prefer Sophia slightly.
How about Estella?

RuthW · 08/01/2025 15:54

Stella

Too many of all the others.

NewGreenDuck · 08/01/2025 15:20

Sophia or Sophie, just classic and timeless.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 08/01/2025 15:16

Stella. Unusual without being really put there, means star in Latin and has a bit of old Hollywood glam about it to me!

AubergineSalad · 08/01/2025 15:13

Stella, by a country mile. Or Estelle?

EcruCardigan · 08/01/2025 15:11

It really suits all ages. But there aren't any in my age group or the decades around it. I can only think of one Eva or Ella who is older than 35, and they're in their 80s.

@LoudPlumDog , sorry for your loss.

queenofthewild · 08/01/2025 15:03

Stella. Or a similar alternative.

Celeste, Estelle, Phoebe.

Bournetilly · 08/01/2025 15:00

Ella is the nicest but too common.
I hate Eva and Sophia.
Stella reminds me of the beer, I don’t really like it.

Whoarethoseguys · 08/01/2025 14:59

My favourite of those is Ella. I'm not keen on the others

Arcticlife · 08/01/2025 14:57

Estella is so lovely (strong female character in the classic Great Expectations).

LoudPlumDog · 08/01/2025 14:40

Ella. Classical, elegant and just beautiful.

My Ella always loved her name ( she recently passed away aged 21) and her best friend is also Ella. It really suits all ages.

I’m a teacher and know hundreds of Ellas and Evas. Stella makes me think of A Streetcar Named Desire (but admit that this is a fairly niche reference). Sophia for me, although I wouldn’t choose it myself as it is a bit of a mouthful and difficult to shorten.

This

BobbyBiscuits · 08/01/2025 14:28

Ella. I think Sophie is nice but not with an A. It sounds a bit snobby. The others are just not my taste.

Axelotl · 08/01/2025 14:27

Ella
Stella is ok but it is beer.

ThatOpalSquid · 08/01/2025 14:26

None of them, they’re all over done. Nothing wrong with them just wouldn’t pick them.

SallyWD · 08/01/2025 14:25

I really love Stella. It's one of my favourite girls names. It's feminine and strong.
The other names are overused and not very interesting, in my opinion.

MiddleAgedDread · 08/01/2025 13:37

Stella
Eva and Ella are so popular
I like Sophie but not Sophia
