Would you use a second cousins name for your baby?

32 weeks and really struggling for a name for our second boy. I have a cousin with an 18 year old son whose name I've always loved but just assumed it was off the cards since it's in the family. To be clear I never see these relatives and don't have a relationship aside from pleasantries at family gatherings which is rare anyway, it's been years since I seen. My mum however is very close to her sister (my aunt, who is the grandmother of the 18 year old) and sees her all the time so it's not like they are totally distant. Would you use a family name or would you totally write it off?

I’ve never understood the ‘ taking name’ thing. Two of my friends told me they loved my DD name and used it. I was delighted. One used a longer version but it’s been shortened to my daughter’s name.
I think it’s lovely, especially when it’s an older child that someone else liked the name you chose so much.

Careya · 03/02/2025 22:15

I think it’s fine. Plenty of people give their dc the same name as a parent or gp. A cousin or second cousin is fine.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 03/02/2025 22:11

I think it’s fine - especially if it’s a different surname and you don’t see them very often so there’s unlikely to be any confusion.Your Aunt and cousin may just refer to your DS as “Beechive’s Thomas” or “Little Thomas” (or whatever name).

I’d be happy enough to do it myself (in fact one of my second cousins names was on my girls list - but I had a DS).

theduchessofspork · 02/02/2025 02:13

It’s totally fine to use it

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 01/02/2025 10:51

In my family we name our children after favourite aunts, cousins and grandparents all the time. It's what we do! I find it strange that people pick random names for their child. All our family have names that are connected.

In answer to your question, just use the name you want.

Plantingtimes · 01/02/2025 07:36

It’s happened a couple of times in my family and no one thinks anything of it. We’re all quite close too.

wigsonthegreenandhatsforthelifting · 01/02/2025 01:36

Flip me, if you're not close use the name you love!!

My first cousin called two of her children the same names as two of my siblings! We used to see each other reasonably regularly but not now. It meant that all of them had to have their surname added to any reference to their name!

When cousin had her 3rd baby, she chose a different name. I can only assume she didn't like my name or my sister's name!!

OneDenimRobin · 01/02/2025 01:31

If it’s a really unusual name it might seem a bit odd. If it’s a commonly used name I’d go for it.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 01/02/2025 01:30

I was given the same name as my DM's cousin, she wasn't even very fond of her, which I always thought was strange but she liked her name. My brother was named after another cousin who she did like.

MissedItByThisMuch · 01/02/2025 01:28

I did this - in fact two of my cousins have a son with the name. Not a family name, but a relatively common, standard name. It’s never been an issue - we’re not a particularly close family and I’ve never met either of the namesakes.

PMAmostofthetime · 01/02/2025 01:24

I didn't use a name because of a similar situation and now I regret it.

I'm due to have another and if it had been the same sex as last time I would have used it this time.

It's different if they are close to you but they could be flattered with that age difference as you could say they are named after them. I share a middle name with 5 of my first cousins. Some others do too.

Use the name you love- don't regret it like I did.

Congratulations OP

Perhapsperhaps · 01/02/2025 01:22

I called my child my cousin’s name. Middle name was another cousin’s name. They were family names before that anyway.

user1492757084 · 01/02/2025 01:15

I would use it, especially if they have different surnames.

holymonstera · 30/01/2025 11:34

Wouldn't do it if I see them. If you are very distant and have no relationship then it doesn't matter.

SquigglePigs · 07/01/2025 11:24

I think it's fine. My cousin's name was on our shortlist for DD (and a different cousin's name was on our shortlist if she'd been a DS!). I would have asked my cousin first though if she minded if that's the name we'd ultimately settled on.

Emanwenym · 07/01/2025 11:06

3 of my cousins used the same name for one of their children. My grandmother was great-grandmother to 3 with the same name. It wasn't an issue. It's a common name but not a 'family' one.

On the other side of the family, two of my cousins used the same name for their child, and that was more noticeable because the name is fairly unusual.

A few cousins named a DC with a name of their own cousin.

I know someone who called her child her sister's name. That's a bit weird but I know plenty of Sarahs who have a SIL called Sarah and a few Johns with a BIL called John.

Twixtmasjigsaw · 07/01/2025 08:09

I think it was more common in previous generations. My Dad and his first cousin shared the same name and they were both named after older family members. My Uncle, Grandad and Great Grandad also had the same name.

I think honouring an older family member is Ok. Not sure I would use it if the cousins were part of the same generation. There are so many good names out there, there's no need to replicate anyone else's name.

TheSandgroper · 07/01/2025 07:18

My cousin used my daughter’s name. Old, feminine, not often used but there is always one around, if you know what I mean.

There is nearly 8 years between them, I think.
There is nearly a continent between them.

They knew what they were doing, I assume, so I took it as a compliment to my daughter (we had holidayed with them once).

crostini · 06/01/2025 17:07

I see my first cousin once removed occasionally socially and our kids are the same age so I personally wouldn't.

But in your circumstances, not having a relationship with that part of the family, I would. Only thing is that your gramdma will have 2 great grand kids with the same name but that's not the end of the world.

Moreteaandchocolate · 06/01/2025 16:49

I loved my cousin’s child’s name and didn’t use it because I didn’t think I should, but we do see them fairly often and the kids are similar ages. In your situation I think it’s fine and if my cousin used one of my children’s names I’d probably take it as a compliment!

SizzlingPrickle · 06/01/2025 16:04

My mum’s first cousins daughter has the same name as me so they obviously thought it was ok 😅 it’s not a common name and not a family name either!

I’ve only met her a few times so not really an issue.

ayvasili · 06/01/2025 16:04

We are Greek.. Have you seen my big fat Greek wedding? Everyone has the same name.. Not a problem at all! 😂

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 06/01/2025 16:01

Yes, with the possible exception of a very unusual name.

WaitingForMojo · 06/01/2025 16:00

I don’t even know what my cousins’ children are called. In fact, I don’t know the name of every cousin.

I think if you spent a lot of time together it might be off limits, but it doesn’t sound like you do?

Plantingtimes · 06/01/2025 15:57

This has happened a few times in my family (big family and clearly similar taste in names!). No one’s ever commented on it, not a big deal at all I don’t think.
