Nicholas?

Thoughts? To be shortened to Nick but full name to be Nicholas on birth certificate. I love it but doesn’t seem very popular anymore (not necessarily a bad thing!)

Thank you! xx

It is the perfect mix of feminine and also really strong. Well known but not too popular/common. Travels well and can be pronounced in many countries and just a really elegant name. Xx

Love it!

Concerns about “knicker-less” put me off using it, but they shouldn’t have done!

Naomi is absolutely gorgeous! Wow such a beautiful name.

Thank you! xx

This was our boy name but we're having a Naomi instead. Nicholas is lovely! Familiar but not popular at present. Solid choice. I wouldn't have thought "knicker-less" but children can take the piss out of most any name. I wouldn't be overly worried.

Thank you everyone! For context it is actually my newborns name. But having read a lot of the names in this forum during night feeds I began to doubt my choice as being too classic annd not “out there” and it was never suggested in any threads so had a wobble. You have all reassured me!

Love it too! Was my top choice if my second had been a boy. Classic and underused at the moment.

CheeseTime · 03/01/2025 19:06

Lovely name. Due a comeback.

Aherbie · 03/01/2025 19:04

I just joined mumsnet moments ago and your post is the first one that came up! My son’s name is Nicholas. I love it. Not too popular anymore which is what I like. A timeless classic.

elliejjtiny · 03/01/2025 19:01

I love it, was nearly a middle name for my youngest.

Thewrongdoor · 03/01/2025 19:00

I like it. I know one who goes by Cole.

MumChp · 03/01/2025 18:58

It's nice.

Scutterbug · 03/01/2025 18:57

I’m another who automatically thinks knicker-less.

Sandsnake · 03/01/2025 18:56

I really like Nicholas. Nick is ok, but don’t quite like as much.

Like pp I can see Nicholas having a comeback, but maybe more with the shortened version of ‘Nico’ rather than Nick. A little bit like the growth in the popularity of Christopher and Kit, rather than Chris.

ItsFreedomBabyYeah · 03/01/2025 18:54

I love it. Classic. Strong. Timeless.

Popular but not too popular.

All the Nicholas's I went to primary school got called 'knicker-less' or some other knicker based teasing. It's a same as it's otherwise a nice name but kids can be horrid to each other.

I have learnt something! I never even thought of the association! Even those who were commonly called Nick?

I loved it and considered it myself but my snide sister in law put me off by saying he'd be known as 'knicker-less' 🙄.

That didn’t even cross my mind!!

I don’t think it would cross most people’s minds! Don’t let this put you off.

Windmill34 · 03/01/2025 18:39

My son is now 37yrs old and called Nicholas
Nick
nice to see it make a comeback

SemperIdem · 03/01/2025 18:35

Nice name, ages well.

It actually fits in well with the move towards softer sounding names for boys without actually being “trendy”. Though you could well be ahead of the curve and find it so in a few years!

A lovely, timeless classic (and classy) name. Nick is solid too. Go for it.

Gowlett · 03/01/2025 18:08

Lovely name. I like Nicky, too.
