Rebel and Rogue

Name changed for this as I don't want to be identified.

My cousin is pregnant and has just discovered she is having twin girls. All lovely. But she has announced their names are going to be Rebel and Rogue. And I am absolutely horrified. Sounds dramatic but especially the name Rogue which for me is someone who regularly breaks the law. I feel sorry for whichever baby is going to be landed with this name and who will possibly be ridiculed at school.

Am I in the wrong for having such a visceral reaction to this? I want to say something diplomatic about this but how?

Hopefully it’s the hormones and she’ll cop on.

Otherwise politely point out that these are very strong flavours of names, quite likely to prejudice teachers and employers - as a minimum please can she give them normal middle names, so at least they have options.

My dad heavily abused acid when my mother was pregnant with myself and my twin in the 90s.

He wanted to call us summer and storm. My mother was horrified and vetoed this immediately. These names feel traditional and conservative in comparison.

Awful @stupidnames They actually sound like the names of 2 German Shepherds.

This is so gonna go viral on social media.. I would ask for this thread to be deleted later if you don't want your cousin to maybe pick this up?

Oh god. Do you think so? I have never seen them pick up on baby names before?

Lucky they're girls, they could've been Bionic and Legend! I reckon she's spinning a yarn to stop people asking.

I don’t think kids in 10 years time will know what rogue means and will probably just accept it as a name.

I think adults have more prejudice against names so this would probably be a future problem.

I hope so. I just think we have a responsibility when we name our children so we don't subject them to unnecessary ridicule.

I just don't know if kids in 10 years time or so will make the connection

Picklewicklepickle · 01/01/2025 21:31

Are they X-Men?!

They’re not so bad on their own (although not my taste) but together are 😦 Like one of those awful double acts you get on a cruise ship.

I’m fairly relaxed and like unusual names but she may as well just name them little shit and convict.

Exactly 😭

Are you sure she’s serious?

Someone might have advised her to keep the real names quiet.

Nope. These are the 'secret' names. She has only told a couple of people and as we are really close I don't think she is lying

Didn’t seem to do Rebel Wilson any harm! Pretty sure Rogue was in X Men.

Tough names to live up to though haha

Edited

Rebel Wilson is just a stage name.

Her real name is Melanie Elizabeth Bownds.

Onlyvisiting · 01/01/2025 21:29

Dear god......
Lovely names for a pair of hounds.
Awful names for 2 girls. If anything they are more male names for some reason. I don't like either but Rouge is dreadful

mnahmnah · 01/01/2025 21:28

Whatever their personalities, those names won’t work. They sound really silly if they don’t live up to them. But then why would you want your children to go through life feeling the need to live up to them either?! Crazy.

Good names for two Labradors.

Scirocco · 01/01/2025 21:27

Is she having X-wings?

HoppityBun · 01/01/2025 21:27

These are the names of dogs
