Rebel and Rogue

Name changed for this as I don't want to be identified.

My cousin is pregnant and has just discovered she is having twin girls. All lovely. But she has announced their names are going to be Rebel and Rogue. And I am absolutely horrified. Sounds dramatic but especially the name Rogue which for me is someone who regularly breaks the law. I feel sorry for whichever baby is going to be landed with this name and who will possibly be ridiculed at school.

Am I in the wrong for having such a visceral reaction to this? I want to say something diplomatic about this but how?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

There’s a gay male couple who pop up on my TikTok FYP feed sometimes who have children called Rebel and Rio. I always think they sound like German shepherd names but the kids are very cute.

MirandaBlu · 01/01/2025 22:20

I went to school with an Rebel (real name Rebecca Louise). She'd have been born in the mid '70s so pre-Rebel Wilson. It's at least a nice-sounding name aesthetically. Rogue is not so great to me, like a frog croaking or something similar.

If she's absolutely set on these names and that they be THE names and not nicknames/diminutives, I'd probably go the route of suggesting maybe more traditional and versatile middles.

AmiablePedant · 01/01/2025 22:17

Rebel rebel, you've torn your dress
Rebel rebel, your face is a mess
Rebel rebel, how could they know?
Hot tramp, I love you so!

RIP David Bowie

I don’t think kids in 10 years time will know what rogue means and will probably just accept it as a name.

I think adults have more prejudice against names so this would probably be a future problem.

Rogue is a common class to play in video games, sneaky and stealthy, so at the very least they’ll make this connection.

Motherofalittledragon · 01/01/2025 22:15

It's ok if you're a jack russell terrier.

Randomontheinternet25 · 01/01/2025 22:13

Hormones?
Wanting 'super unique' names?
Winding you up?
I've heard of twin boys Ronnie & Reggie (not in my social circle, but several times on here)
Doesn't really matter what you think, not your babies not your choice

I thought I was opening a thread about a clothing brand that I’d never heard of 😬

Same here. I thought it might be a bit alternative which is why I was curious...

DooDooDooDooDooDooDooDoo · 01/01/2025 22:07

Rebel is not the name she was given by her parents though, it’s a name she adopted for herself

Not really. Her mother wanted to call her Rebel after someone she knew but her dad was against it. They did use the name Rebel for her as a nickname when she was growing up and then she changed it.

Suimai · 01/01/2025 21:59

I’ve got a rebel and rogue! One’s a dog and one’s a lizard. Tbf there’s a celebrity rebel, and a rogue, though she’s off x men 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 each to their own I guess. I think there’s far worse common names

MumChp · 01/01/2025 21:59

Awful. Leave it to her to explain the children in due time.

MyUmberSeal · 01/01/2025 21:59

A friend of my husband has twin boys called Ronnie and Reggie!! They are 5 now. What’s more, the parents really think that the names are cool and kooky. I think its an awful thing to put on your kids.

littlebilliie · 01/01/2025 21:58

I think she could consider

Prowler and Growler

(it's a lovely pet shop nearby)

SqueegieBeckenheimer · 01/01/2025 21:57

My mistake, it was Rebel and Vogue in gladiators...

Might not be my cup of tea but there are worse names.

villainousbroodmare · 01/01/2025 21:55

If you gave those names to your dogs you'd live to regret it. Nominative determinism. It's a thing.
This is a truly stupid woman IF this is her true intention.

SqueegieBeckenheimer · 01/01/2025 21:55

Wasn't Rogue in Gladiators?
Or maybe they both were.
They're definitely Gladiator type names.

Didn’t seem to do Rebel Wilson any harm! Pretty sure Rogue was in X Men.

Tough names to live up to though haha

Edited

Guavafish1 · 01/01/2025 21:52

Some people are called Jesus…

let it be… kid can change name in the future… they are all changing their gender!

Forgottobuymincepies · 01/01/2025 21:51

Tell her if they got the gender wrong she can go with Ronnie and Reggie...

Frubesboobs · 01/01/2025 21:50

Deffo a reverse and testing here
I know a child named Rebel, she’s 2- I agree bit if a weird name when I first heard it and agree negative connotations. i think people are naming after Rebel Wilson without realising it’s not her actual name

AmiablePedant · 01/01/2025 21:50

Onlyvisiting · 01/01/2025 21:47

Rebel will have it easy. She can be Bel. Struggling for a good NN for Rouge.....

Your typo already found one!

stupidnames · 01/01/2025 21:44

This is what I want to say. Life can be hard enough without facing prejudice about your name. I actually feel quite furious on the twins behalf as to me this all feels very selfish. It isn't cool or wacky to name your children something that might cause a lifetime of problems

theduchessofspork · 01/01/2025 21:39

Hopefully it’s the hormones and she’ll cop on.

Otherwise politely point out that these are very strong flavours of names, quite likely to prejudice teachers and employers - as a minimum please can she give them normal middle names, so at least they have options.

Self fulfilling prophecy dictates they'll grow up to be naughty.

These are the names of dogs

Or a well-matched pair of Shire horses
