Rebel and Rogue

Name changed for this as I don't want to be identified.

My cousin is pregnant and has just discovered she is having twin girls. All lovely. But she has announced their names are going to be Rebel and Rogue. And I am absolutely horrified. Sounds dramatic but especially the name Rogue which for me is someone who regularly breaks the law. I feel sorry for whichever baby is going to be landed with this name and who will possibly be ridiculed at school.

Am I in the wrong for having such a visceral reaction to this? I want to say something diplomatic about this but how?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MolkosTeenageAngst · 02/01/2025 11:46

I know a young teen called Rogue, although he is a boy. A bit out there as names but not the worst I’ve seen/ heard, she might change her mind anyway.

NPET · 02/01/2025 11:44

It sounds fun...

No OK it doesn't, but I'm sure she'll realise by the time they arrive.

stupidnames · 02/01/2025 11:40

No she isn't joking sadly. I hope she changes her mind though. Her DH is very laid back and will probably go along with what she decides.

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat Definitely Rumour. She was in my child's class so I saw it when they posted the Christmas card name list.

Pinkissmart · 02/01/2025 09:58

I think they’re fine 🤷‍♀️

MajorCarolDanvers · 02/01/2025 09:53

Is she maybe joking?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 02/01/2025 09:52

Rihannas youngest is called Riot but she's a global star so can get away with it.Normal person has a lot to live up to and a lifetime of pisstakes.

kittyycatt · 01/01/2025 23:36

I know a child called Rumour. I wish I was close enough to ask why 🙈

Also a boy called Riot. I can't remember the brothers name but that's something crazy too. Apparently he does live up to his name!

Are you sure it's not Rumer, as in Godden? Pronounced the same, but if you never saw it written down...

OP, I'd tell your friend that she's having two children, not a matching set. They won't always be together, so the names have to work as stand alone names without fallback onto the other 'pair' name. So while Rebel might get away with it, Rogue is going to sound like a perpetual nickname. You never know, it might get through to her.

Someone at my child's nursery called their twins Ronnie and Reggie. Rebel and Rogue sound fine after that.

See I don't think that's too bad aside from the Krays connotation. At least these are actual names and in isolation they aren't too bad

Are you sure she's not teasing? I convinced my brother we were going to call our DD Halcyon.......

DelphiniumBlue · 02/01/2025 09:28

Ridiculous names, and if you can't tell her that, you could at least laugh out loud /splutter into your tea next time she mentions it. Maybe refer to the supermarket test...how would it be calling those names out in the supermarket when they've run off?
Do you feel feel we have a collective responsibility to prevent parents from inflicting silly names on children, or do you think that a reaction would ruin your relationship?
You could also talk about how giving twins similar names starting with the same letter of the alphabet is not acknowledging their individuality, and how it can cause issues with mail ( leading to privacy issues) when they are older. 3 people in my house have names that start with the same letter, so I know what I'm talking about here!

stupidnames · 01/01/2025 21:30

Nope. These are the 'secret' names. She has only told a couple of people and as we are really close I don't think she is lying

My friend convinced her family she was giving her child the same name as her surname, like Jackson Jackson, before the child was born. It was all a big joke but they thought it was true so hopefully your friend is doing the same.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/01/2025 07:59

Could be a subliminal idea she has picked up from seeing this book lying around somewhere?

Rebel and Rogue
HugoYorway · 02/01/2025 07:09

She's probably read too many 'stole my baby name' threads.

user1492757084 · 02/01/2025 03:14

Rebel and Rogue.
Could you offer up - Revelle and Vogue?
Or Rebelle and Vogue?

Rebel is not unheard of but Rogue is dire.

It could be worse, I guess..
Crimson and Grimelda - Crim and Grim.

Tell your friend that you will help her shop for orange onesies and striped pyjamas.

BlueSilverCats · 02/01/2025 00:37

If they have another baby does she have the name Renegade on standby?

SunDash · 01/01/2025 23:55

Great names for puppies 🤣

TaggieO · 01/01/2025 23:41

They sound like 2 naughty little kittens.🤣

Forgottobuymincepies · 01/01/2025 22:25

Maybe offer up Pebble and Bogey as nicknames?
Rebel Pebble and Rogue Bogey have a certain ring to them..

TheaBrandt · 01/01/2025 22:24

Surely she’s having you on ?!
