I know how commonly Rose is used as a middle name, but how common is it as a first name? Just straight up Rose, rather than any variants. How many do you know/are there in your DC classes etc? Thank you.

Lovely name, I know of a 10 year old and a 4 year old Rose

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 27/12/2024 10:06

I’m suprised by the couple of Rose West comments as Rose is such a popular name that it really isn’t linked to just one person (not like Myra).

Most Grandparents or Great- Grandparents will likely think of the flower first, parents and teachers will probably think Titanic or the several Hollywood actresses called Rose and children will just think of all their peers that undoubtedly have Rose as their middle name 🤣

Rose (Rosemary) West won’t be a blip on most people radar OP imo, unless your surname has West in it. It similarly hasn’t affected the popularity of Freddie and Frederick for kids (some of ones I know get shortened to Fred too).

It’s a gorgeous name.

I know a 23 yo Rose.
She’s Rosemary on her BC, was known as Rosie when younger but Rose really suits the beautiful young lady she’s become.

Dinodrivingacar · 27/12/2024 09:03

My DD is called Rose. She never gets called Rosie. There was another rose in her class at primary school. I know a few as I work in nurseries too. I love it, as does DD!

Emanwenym · 27/12/2024 08:35

I'm not keen on it. I know some but they are not just Rose. I prefer Rose as a first name than as a middle name, and I'd use just Rose not Rosemary or something.

HoundsOfHelfire · 27/12/2024 06:46

I know one. It’s a beautiful name

BeerForMyHorses · 27/12/2024 06:44

Beautiful name.

Nettleteaser101 · 27/12/2024 05:10

Rose is a lovely name.

.We have an 11 year old niece, Rose.
Beautiful name for a beautiful girl. ❤

WandsOut · 27/12/2024 03:49

Rose is a beautiful name.

Ignore the weird negative comments.

ProvincialLady24 · 27/12/2024 03:32

It's not very common as a first name. It's really beautiful.

mathanxiety · 27/12/2024 02:41

I think Rose West has spoiled the name for me.

Pieceofpurplesky · 27/12/2024 02:15

Gorgeous name, wasted as a middle name along with Grace and May!

I also love Rosalie and Rosita

OneLoyalGreyFish · 27/12/2024 02:14

My nearly 10 year old granddaughter is called Rose - named after my mum who passed away just 3 months before she was born, it was my mum’s middle name.

My daughter (granddaughter’s mum) has Rose as one of her middle names as does my other granddaughter who is 6.

i do know that there is another Rose in my granddaughter’s class so they are referred to as Rose and the initial of their surnames.

i think it’s a beautiful name - totally suits my beautiful granddaughter.

Yellowted · 27/12/2024 02:07

I have a Rose, she's 6 and never come across another one who is just Rose. She has a girl with Rose as a middle name in her class however.

I have always loved the name and it has a special family connection too.

Barleysugar86 · 27/12/2024 02:05

I know a couple of older Rose's, and a toddler Rosalie who goes by Rosie/ Rosa/ Rose at various times.

It's a nice name but the one with Rose as a first name I know (now secondary school) does get Rosie a fair bit from friends- I think you have to be open to this very common nickname if you use it. Once you give a kid a name the variants are a bit out of your hands unfortunately.

theduchessofspork · 27/12/2024 01:56

I seem to know a lot from 3 to forty odd, plus some elderly ones. They are variously Rose, Rosa, Rosie, Rosanne, Rosanagh, Rosalind, but tend to be Rose or Rosie day to day (with one Posy)

Put all the variations into darkgreener to get an idea if it’s too popular for you

Ketzele · 26/12/2024 22:37

I love Rose and Rosa. Had an elderly relative (now dead) called Rosita.

Moreteaandchocolate · 26/12/2024 22:15

I know one older lady called Rose and a few Rosa / Rosies of primary / secondary and adult ages, but no young Roses. I like it - classic, classy and simple - what’s not to like?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/12/2024 22:02

I know one who is a middle aged woman and known at work but being hard faced. But my Nan was also called Rose and it’s DD’s middle name. DD said she wouldn’t have minded if it was her first name.

bellocchild · 26/12/2024 22:00

My grandmother's name was Rose, so for us it's special.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 26/12/2024 21:52

I have a Rose. She loves her name.

I go to a lot of different toddler groups (DC hasn’t started nursery yet) and have met only one Rose.

It’s lovely imo -very classic, elegant, yet romantic. It also feels reasonably timeless (which is fairly uncommon for a popular girls name) so defies age or social background expectations. It was high on my girls name list - but I’m less keen on (descriptive) Rosie and wondered if it would get lengthened.

I’m also not a fan of Rosie at all, which puts me off. But I adore Rose. I agree that it feels fairly timeless and is simple, yet beautiful.

I've only ever known one Rose and she'd be grown up by now. She was a sweet kid.

Emanwenym · 26/12/2024 21:43

Rosie is very popular, and many names shorten to Rose.
