Do you think of Ellis being a girls or boys name?

(There are people of both genders with the name but wondering what comes to mind)

I know two women called Ellis - both in early 30s - and no boys/men. I think it's a really nice name for a girl - was surprised by how many see it a solely a boy's name!

Boy

Mine is a boy, I believe it comes from Elijah

I thought it was more a girls name in the US

I know of 1 female Ellis vs 4 boys named Ellis so my first thought it definitely boy.
The males are relatively young (oldest maybe 21) but the female is in her thirties now.

The Welsh ones that I know are Elis

Both exist. Elis is just a more phonetically Welsh way of spelling it. The surname is more often with the double l.

Boy. It's very popular in Wales, and often spelt Elis. Elis James - Wikipedia

Elis is #19 most popular boy's name in Wales.

Edited

Somewhat common as a surname in Wales too so obviously a boy's name for me.
Ellis as a girl would be like Robin or Morgan as a girl for me - something I know can exist in some places.

I immediately think boys’ name, despite my only actual references being Ellis Peters (pen name of a female novelist) and my female next door neighbour is an Ellis as well!

I know 3 BOYS called Ellis... Well, men really. 21, 25, and 31.

Not a girls name. (IMO.)

Boy. I know one age 26. I think his parents really wanted to call him Elliot but couldn't because of another Elliot in the family.

Absolutely not a girl name.

@LindorDoubleChoc Absolutely can be a girls name. I know 2 women called Ellis (age 34 and 31) and 2 boys (age 7 and 1) 🤷🏻‍♀️

No idea about origins etc but to me it’s completely unisex 🤷🏻‍♀️

SkaneTos · 16/12/2024 20:56

The name Ellis, with that spelling, makes me think of the "Grey's Anatomy"-character Ellis Grey, who is a woman (mother of Meredith Grey).
(But I know that Ellis can be a male name, too).

In my home country, the name Elis, with that spelling, is a male name.

And the name Elise is a female name.
