Do you think of Ellis being a girls or boys name?

(There are people of both genders with the name but wondering what comes to mind)

Both, standard male name, less typical female name.

Just makes me think of Ellis Grey, so girl!

There's a female lawyer, originally American, called Gareth.

And an American actress called Sean.

Ellis Grey is a character in an American TV drama. As is Meredith Grey (Meredith, properly Maredudd, contains the elements 'great' or 'sea' + 'lord').

Americans do strange things with names.

I have an Ellis, he's a boy but I have heard of female Ellis's too. He also has a friend called Elis who's a boy (wales)
I would say it was unisex

Isn't the Irish name Eilis?

Somewhat common as a surname in Wales too so obviously a boy's name for me.
Ellis as a girl would be like Robin or Morgan as a girl for me - something I know can exist in some places.

Same here. I would assume they were boys, because I know many men with them as first or middle names. Elis has been popular for baby boys for decades.
I'd put them in the same category as Owen or Pierce.

I really dislike Meredith for a girl. It just seems all wrong compared with the nice boys name Meredydd, from which it originates.

Ellis is for a male.
It is quite old fashioned.
Back in the same era there were boys called..
Beverley, Bailey, Riley, Marion

Now-a-days the sound of it makes me think of Alice.

I immediately think boys’ name, despite my only actual references being Ellis Peters (pen name of a female novelist) and my female next door neighbour is an Ellis as well!

Ellis Peters took it with reference to Ellis Bell - the male pen name of Emily Bronte

I have/had a boy Ellis.
lost him on Christmas Day 2019. He would have been 30 in February.
It’s a lovely name and I used to get loads of compliments for it.

My condolences.
