Do you think of Ellis being a girls or boys name?

(There are people of both genders with the name but wondering what comes to mind)

"Lots of names can be unisex first names and also common surnames - its an increasing trend. i.e Taylor."

Yes, and here you have used natural writing style. You can surely see why I was bemused by your first comment. First of all an explanation of the word unisex, which we all understand, and then some kind of attempt to 'sell' the name Ellis in language that nobody would use in a normal conversation.

Oh for crying out loud, just stick to the subject at hand - you are not an English teacher critiquing my writing style, we are talking about whether a name is male, female or unisex. You are not challenging my comments but how I wrote it. Get over yourself.

@RockOrAHardplace , but your post looked like a cut'n'paste of ChatGPT not your own writing style.

I don't think @Gwenhwyfar was being rude, and I suspect that like me she is Welsh, and Ellis/Elis is a Welsh surname and boy's name.

She was critiquing my style and not my opinion and its rude. Tons of others have said Ellis is unisex why pick on me? I have NEVER used chatGPT in my life. Lots of names can be unisex first names and also common surnames - its an increasing trend. i.e Taylor.

Listen, OP posed the question and people have different opinions. You have yours and I have mine. You also wrote your comment like some kind of AI trying to sell the name. I'm sure we all know what unisex means and your second sentence is a very odd thing to comment in a conversation.

""Ellis" is a unisex name, meaning it can be used for both boys and girls. Its flexibility and appealing sound have made it a popular choice for either gender."

You weren’t critiquing my opinion, you were mocking my writing style - that’s rude and just not called for. Think you got out of the wrong side of bed!

Apologies (NOT) if the fact I dared to add comments offended! My female neighbour is Ellis and my grandfather was Ellis! Hence being unisex.

Well, thanks Chat GPT.
However, some of us think it's not unisex...

I would expect it to be a boy, but I wouldn't be shocked if it was a girl.

AlexaSetATimer · 19/12/2024 22:50

Boy

Ceebs85 · 19/12/2024 21:50

I'd think boy but love it for a girl too. Also like Elliott for a girl

Boy.

do a poll next time

stargazerlil · 19/12/2024 21:00

I know a man called Ellis, in his 50’s

itsmylife7 · 19/12/2024 20:58

I know two males called Ellis both aged 50.

20yearagegap · 19/12/2024 12:52

I LOVE it for a girl (thanks Greys) but I think most people would think its a boys name

KirstenBlest · 19/12/2024 12:11

I know far too many middle-aged Dylans to see it as a girl's name, and 'Dillun' hurts my ears.

Gwenhwyfar · 19/12/2024 11:30

KirstenBlest · 19/12/2024 09:57

Same here. I would assume they were boys, because I know many men with them as first or middle names. Elis has been popular for baby boys for decades.
I'd put them in the same category as Owen or Pierce.

I really dislike Meredith for a girl. It just seems all wrong compared with the nice boys name Meredydd, from which it originates.

Oh yes, and I've also just remembered that some Americans use Dylan as a girl's name. Ouch.

KirstenBlest · 19/12/2024 11:14

George Eliot and George Sands were women, so Prince George was actually given a girl's name. Wink

GherkOut · 19/12/2024 11:12

Boy

It's the one Emily Brontë chose as a pseudonym to hide the fact that she (a woman - shock) had written a novel. So that's my reasoning!!

KirstenBlest · 19/12/2024 11:05

@Chersfrozenface , Gareth Pierce's real name was Jean Margaret Webb and she's British. She's also acted in The Archers and Corrie Smile

If you mean Sean Young, nuff sed.
Americans sometimes call their DC their maiden name, Cameron, Anderson, Ellis, Harper etc.

Maredudd and Meredydd are both valid spellings, but I've seen Meredydd used more, and it means great lord or similar

Lionel Shriver was a Margaret.

Crystall88 · 19/12/2024 11:02

Boy

mrstea301 · 19/12/2024 11:01

Either. My friends daughter is called Ellis and it really suits her!

cooldarkroom · 19/12/2024 10:44

My niece is Elise (Elissse not Eleeez)
I had a male employer called Ellis
