Are these names too similar?

I nc'd for this.

I have a DD called Lily (just before it became very popular). In my opinion, and it's just that, Lily is the prettiest name in the world. However, I had a tiny pang of regret of not naming her Lilith and using Lily as a nickname, as imo it's just as nice. I'm pregnant and don't know what I'm having, but if it's a girl, I really want to call her Lilith. What would you think if someone you knew did that? Are they too similar?

Lilith would be nicknamed Lili.
If someone asks for Lily Sidebottom, it could be either sister.
I'd even avoid the same initial.

I agree with pp, much too similar.
I once knew someone who wanted to name her second daughter Kate when the first was Kathy, but she was talked out of it thankfully.

To be clear, I wouldn't nickname her Lily! It'd just be Lilith.

You might not, but everyone else will, so she'll end up being Lily to school friends for example and it'll be confusing for her. Far too similar. There are so many other beautiful names to choose from!

Don’t be ridiculous. It’s basically the same name.

Hard no

ginasevern · 14/12/2024 12:04

You can't do that! They will be teased forever more.

You won't but friends will, almost certainly at school she will become Lily and family might also slip into Lily without realising they have. I think you need to find another name you like

BurgundyBear · 14/12/2024 11:41

Far too similar. It sounds like the same name.
In fact when I Googled it, it brought up Lily as a nn for Lilith. So no.

FrogsLoveRain · 14/12/2024 11:28

Far too similar.

Just because you wouldn't shorten to Lily doesn't mean school friends wouldn't when she's older.

Edith is a good suggestion that a previous poster made.

lakesiders · 14/12/2024 11:27

You can't have a lily and a Lilith I also wouldn't want to name a child after the most notorious demonic female figure.
