Are these names too similar?

I nc'd for this.

I have a DD called Lily (just before it became very popular). In my opinion, and it's just that, Lily is the prettiest name in the world. However, I had a tiny pang of regret of not naming her Lilith and using Lily as a nickname, as imo it's just as nice. I'm pregnant and don't know what I'm having, but if it's a girl, I really want to call her Lilith. What would you think if someone you knew did that? Are they too similar?

Batshit

Plus....Lillith? A demon? You want to call your child after a demon?

Always makes me think of Lilith from Frasier.

Names with a similar vibe to Lilith:

Sybil
Daphne
Judith
Marnie
Esther
Iris

I like Marnie very much. How about Sadie, that’s a great name imo.

So DH likes the name very much and didn't want to veto it, however he says it probably is too similar to Lily to use it. So I guess that's a no Sad

No probably’s about it, it’s almost the same name and is certainly the same diminutive. It’s like Leigh and Leanne or Susan and Suzanne, Ann and Anna etc

Lily is a beautiful name! It can be quite random how popular a name is, my ds was one of four with his name in his class in reception. We moved and there was only two others with his name in the whole school.

But yes Lilith and Lily are practically the same name.

If you called your eldest Lily before it became popular, she must be almost an adult by now, so their lives will probably be very separate. Better than if they were a couple of years apart.

But still, no.

MajorCarolDanvers · 14/12/2024 12:58

Way too similar

Manchesterbythesea · 14/12/2024 12:57

Far too similar. People will be constantly commenting on it. Just move on and find a new name. Lily is beautiful by the way,

Overthebow · 14/12/2024 12:55

They’re pretty much the same name so no. And she’ll get nicknamed Lilli at school so you’ll have a Lilly and a Lilli.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 14/12/2024 12:54

Batshit

HouseFullOfChaos · 14/12/2024 12:52

Surely Lily is just a shortened version of Lilith? It'd be like calling a boy Joe and his younger brother Joseph. I know many children who have the shortened version of a name as their birth certificate name and I think it would be really odd if their sibling had the longer version.

BunnyLake · 14/12/2024 12:43

And what happens if Lilith decides she wants to shorten her name to Lily (because what else can she shorten it to and you can’t ban her from ever shortening it), or her school friends call her Lily?

Honestly, do you really need to be told they are too similar. They’re practically the same name!

BoleynMemories13 · 14/12/2024 12:41

I'm sorry but it would be ridiculous. It would be like having a Katie and Catherine, or a Alfie and Alfred. A Tommy and Thomas, or Lucy and Lucinda.

You may never call her Lily, but you'd be limiting her ability to ever have anyone shorten her name. She'll spend her life saying "pleaee don't call me that, that's my sister's name", which will probably be quite embarrassing as they're so ridiculously similar she'll then know other people will be thinking wtf when they find that out. It would be unfair.

I'm sorry, but sometimes in life you just have to let names you love go. This is one of them.

incdforthise · 14/12/2024 11:25

To be clear, I wouldn't nickname her Lily! It'd just be Lilith.

You might not nickname her Lili but everyone else will (because Lilith is a really ugly name) and then both of your daughter will have the same name & everyone will think you're batshit

What does their father think? Suggest for names?

JollyGreenSnake · 14/12/2024 12:36

OP, I hope you're not seriously considering giving a second child an alternate version of your DDs name?

WaltzingWaters · 14/12/2024 12:30

Far far far too similar for siblings. That’s a hard no.

Zonder · 14/12/2024 12:28

Lily is already a really popular name so there will be other children with a really similar name in school. It's far too similar to her sister. I'd go for something different.

Iwanttoliveonamountain · 14/12/2024 12:27

Call your first child Lilith as a nickname
Call your next child a different name because she is a different person

LimeCookie · 14/12/2024 12:23

Your second child may feel they don’t have their ‘own’ name and could be something that hangs in the back of their mind forever more. Good luck, name picking is hard.

RolaColaLola · 14/12/2024 12:21

If you named your Lily before it became popular, then she must be, what, mid-teens by now. How does she feel about her sister having the same name?!

It is a very hard no from me.

Edenmum2 · 14/12/2024 12:20

I think both of your children would be baffled and annoyed if you did this

Bobbie12345 · 14/12/2024 12:19

Weirdly similar. Please don’t do this.

TheGriffle · 14/12/2024 12:15

Please give your second child their own name and not an extension of their sisters.

Hopefully you have a boy and you can laugh in a few years time at how silly you were being.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/12/2024 12:15

Yes op they are much much too similar.
